Whitelisting: Whitelisting refers to marking a particular entity as approved in order to ensure that it’s included. For example, someone using an ad blocker might whitelist a specific website, allowing that one site to serve them ads. Some websites, such as Forbes.com, will withhold content from users until they agree to whitelist the site. Other sites, such as Bloomberg.com, simply greet users with a message asking nicely.
Arianna Huffington is reinventing herself for the umpteenth time. Huffington announced that she’s stepping away from the Huffington Post to run Thrive Global, a new start-up focused on health and well-being. Huffington co-founded her namesake publication in 2005. She’s announcing her departure only two months after she extended her contract with HuffPo owner AOl. The contract would have kept her in place as President and Editor-in-Chief through 2019.
Turner led a $45 million investment in Refinery29, the digital media company geared toward millennial women. Refinery29 has raised $125 million to date. Over the past year, Refinery29 has dramatically increased its video offerings, and has even launched local websites in Germany and the U.K. Turner is the company’s second TV partner; Scripps Networks Interactive invested in the company last April.

AT&T AdWorks, AT&T’s ad tech division, announced that it can now serve 60-second ads to its base of roughly 14 million addressable TV homes. AT&T says that advertisers often need more than 30 seconds to get their message across on TV. “Advertisers, across all different industries, are looking for additional time to engage their target audience, while taking advantage of innovative addressable TV solutions that minimize waste,” said Rick Welday, President of AT&T AdWorks, in a release.

Microsoft’s Xbox division has acquired Beam Interactive, a live-streaming startup that enables users to watch and play along with gamers. The move is sure to put Microsoft in competition with Amazon’s Twitch. Deal terms weren’t disclosed.
OTT + SVOD
CBS All Access, CBS’s SVOD service, costs subscribers $6 a month. Still, there’s no ad-free option. And according to CBS Interactive President Marc DeBevoise, that may change. “We’re toying with the idea of a commercial free option and how we might roll that out to consumers,” he said during the Television Critics Association summer press tour. The service features live-streaming of local CBS stations, and access to content from the CBS library. Soon, original content will be thrown into the mix as well: an extension of the CBS reality series Big Brother arrives this fall, and four new series in 2017, including a Star Trek reboot and a spinoff of The Good Wife.
Amazon has picked up a new docu-series about Playboy founder Hugh Hefner. The companies behind the series, Stephen David Entertainment and Playboy Enterprises’ Alta Loma Entertainment, initially announced the production in January. The series will make use of archival footage, Hefner’s scrapbooks, and interviews with the playboy himself. It’ll premiere on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S., U.K., Japan, Austria and Germany next year.
And another Amazon acquisition: As first reported by Variety, the company has picked up Cry Now, a new romantic drama film that is the feature directorial debut of Alberto Barboza, a dialogue coach and consulting producer on Hulu’s East Los High. The movie centers on a street poster artist who falls in love with a tattoo designer. The acquisition is for all platforms, including Amazon Prime and Amazon Instant Video.
The CW is adding some content to CW Seed, its online streaming service. New additions include UPN/CW comedies Everybody Hates Chris and Girlfriends, as well as Girlfriends spin-off The Game.
Deadline reports that a new animated series is in development for CW Seed. According to the report, producers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim are looking to debut Freedom Fighters: The Ray in 2017. Freedom Fighters will be the first series to feature a gay superhero as its lead. Like with CW Seed’s Vixen, the intent is for the main character to cross over into the live-action CW shows Arrow and The Flash, both of which are based on the DC Comics universe.

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming for Aug. 4-10 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Trends and insights from the 8,435,746 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– NBC was the home of thrills, with 35.5% of all “excited” ERs across all networks driven by, you guessed it, the Rio Olympics. Other NBCU networks that are broadcasting Olympic events are also in on the excitement, led by NBC Sports, which had 16.2% of all “excited” ERs.
– Outside of the Olympics, MTV drove 3% of all “sad” ERs across all networks, thanks primarily to match-making show Are You the One?
– Also outside of the Olympics (which are dominating pretty much every emotion), CBS drove 2% of all “funny” ERs across all networks, mostly due to Big Brother.
– NBC was also the home of moist eyes, with 39.8% of “cried” ERs prompted by Olympic performances.
Kargo, a mobile marketplace for premium brand advertising, has named Lizzie Black as its VP of Strategic Partnerships, East. Black will drive business with agencies and trading desks in the East Coast region. Black most recently served as Federated Media’s Regional VP for the East Coast. She’ll work in Kargo’s New York office, reporting to Kevin Canty, the company’s SVP of Sales, East.
