Disney is set to spend $1 billion for a 33% stake in BAMTech, the Major League Baseball-owned streaming media unit. And with the new investment, Disney’s ESPN plans to launch a new multi-sport subscription streaming service featuring content from both ESPN and BAMTech. Content will include international, national, and regional sporting events – but nothing from ESPN’s linear networks.

 

The world’s biggest advertising spender is cutting way down on targeted Facebook ads. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Procter & Gamble has decided that there can be such a thing as over-targeting. “We targeted too much and we went too narrow,” P&G Chief Marketing Officer Marc Pritchard told the Journal, “and now we’re looking at: What is the best way to get the most reach but also the right precision?” One example the Journal cites: A couple years back, P&G tried to target its Facebook ads for Febreze air freshener toward pet owners and households with large families. But sales stagnated, and only went up when the company opened up advertising to everyone over eighteen years old. While P&G will get a bit less targeted in its approach (except in certain instances, such as diaper ads for expecting mothers), it won’t be reducing its overall Facebook spend. Still, one of the major appeals of Facebook’s ad inventory is the precision of the social network’s targeting; if other companies start deciding that overly-targeted ads can be similarly ineffective, that could put a dent in Facebook’s ad revenue.
 
Twitter announced that it will open Moments, its storytelling product, up to everyday users. The product, which consists of tweets, photos and videos on a single topic or story, has been curated by Twitter, as well as by select advertisers and publishers, since its launch last year. Moments will launch for all users in the coming months. In the meantime, Twitter says it will make the feature available to a broader group of brands, influencers, and partners.

ADVERTISING
 

Facebook says it will begin using software that will show ads to Facebook users who use a desktop – even if they’ve got ad blocking software running. The company also announced that it would update its ad controls to allow users to opt out of seeing ads from specific businesses.
 
The financial media marketing platform InvestingChannel has chosen the native advertising platform Connatix to power its native video. The companies say that InvestingChannel has already rolled out native video placements to its publishers, helping to drive a 30%-plus increase in total video ad revenue.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
 

The virtual reality company NextVR, whose technology is used to broadcast live events, just raised $80 million in Series B funding. Investors included Asian companies such as SoftBank, NetEase, and CMC Holdings. “Having the support of Asia’s biggest players provides us with significant resources for creating and distributing both local and international content in China, Korea, and Japan,” said NextVR Executive Chairman Brad Allen in a statement. All of NextVR’s Series A investors, including Time Warner Investments and Comcast Ventures, participated as well. NextVR’s Series A funding amounted to $30.5 million.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
 

Netflix will debut four documentary films at the Toronto International Film Festival this September. The films include Amanda Knox, a doc about the American woman who was imprisoned in Italy for nearly four years after being accused of murdering her roommate. The other premieres are Clive Oppenheimer and Werner Herzog’s Into the Inferno, about the relationship between humans and volcanoes; The Ivory Game, about Africa’s illegal ivory trade; and The White Helmets, about volunteer rescue workers helping civilians during the Syrian conflict. The White Helmets debuts on Netflix September 16; Amanda Knox premieres September 30; Into the Inferno debuts October 28; and The Ivory Game premieres November 4.

The live video app Live.me announced that, this past Sunday, over 1.1 million users tuned in to watch YouTube star Roman Atwood destroy his cop car with a monster truck. Studio71, which serves as Atwood’s management company, helped put on the event. You can watch the video here.

The video advertising software company Tremor Video announced a new hire. Clare Dunnett will join the company as Vice President of Operations for the Seller Platform.
