Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Fox is beefing up its new Saturday-morning TV block of STEM programming, “Xploration Station,” which debuts in September. Two new hosts–YouTube and social media’s MysteryGuitarMan Joe Penna and MIT graduate and astronautics expert Emily Calandrelli will join previously announced host Philippe Cousteau. Penna will host Xploration Earth 2050, which investigates what the world and technology will look like in the year 2050. Calandrelli will host Xploration Outer Space, which explores space projects at NASA, private companies and top universities. Cousteau, the keynoter at the upcoming Cynopsis Kids Business Summit, will host Xploration Awesome Planet. Conceived and produced by Steve Rotfeld Productions, these two series are both part of a two-hour block of 30-minute programs featuring science and technology. The fourth series is Xploration Animal Science.

How do you thrive as an indie animation studio in today’s competitive market? CynKids posed just that question – and more – to Guru Studio VP and eternal optimist Mary Bredin, who takes us behind hits such as Sprout’s Justin Time and, in conjunction with Spin Master Entertainment, Nickelodeon’s Paw Patrol, which just made a foray into the development of immersive 3D games with the launch last week of Guru Arcade. Here’s Mary in her own words on…

Secret to indie studio success
Innovation. We never look at any show and think, ‘Oh, we’ll just do that like we did the last one.’ It’s always about figuring out what technology we can use to make the creative come alive and sing.

Selecting which projects are right for Guru
It’s always based on the creative. We have many people sending us projects of all shapes and sizes and we’re always evaluating: What’s the story, who are the characters, what’s the energy driving this show, and is there a vision we can get behind and growth with?

Cross-platform distribution mania
I thrive on change. The Netflix’s and Amazons-I say bring them on! I think the speed at which we’re commissioning [content] now is amazing. You’re starting to see that everyone has an online app, many where content and games are together. At the moment, the ancillary stuff is all seen as a marketing function, which makes it challenging to produce it. But online [was viewed as marketing] a few years ago. Can you watch anything on YouTube now without a pre-roll? So it’s coming; the business for these games will be there.

The right time for Guru Arcade
We considered keeping the games under just Guru, but we thought that taking them to gaming trade shows and specific markets might be confusing. So like all big companies, we have different divisions, each with its own space and feel.

Initial gaming content
The first game based on [original IP] is called Stacks. I can’t really say anything about it yet, but we’re just finishing up the development phase and will start pitching it to publishers soon. We’re looking for all kinds of creative ideas. I love hearing that Angry Birds was [Rovio’s] 300th game, because the gestation period can be five years or three months-and the amazing thing is…no one knows magic recipe.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Two big distribution deals for the Walt Disney Co. this past week: The Mouse House signed multiyear pacts with the National Cable Television Cooperative (NCTC) and Suddenlink, which will both deliver the Disney lineup across platforms. Among included content are the company’s suite of networks, its WATCH TV Everywhere products, the SEC Network (debuting Aug. 14), University of Texas’ upcoming Longhorn Network, and Fusion, the Disney joint venture service with Univision. Financial terms were not disclosed. NCTC has 950 members; Suddenlink is the seventh largest cable operator in the US, serving approximately 1.4 million residential and commercial customers in markets including Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Texas.

If you’re involved in youth media, you need to be at the Cynopsis Kids Business Summit, Sept. 8 in NY. Hear keynotes from DreamWorks head of television Margie Cohn and environmental advocate and media personality Philippe Cousteau, host of the new Fox Saturday morning block, Xploration Station. Share discussions with industry thought leaders including Scholastic Media president Deborah Forte on maximizing cross-platform success; Digital Collective Studio CEO Reza Izad on storytelling in the digital age; and Comedy Central VP programming Rob O’Neill on ways to woo teens. PRODUCTION NOTES

“I pledge allegiance to the band….” Nickelodeon and Paramount Television are bringing back Dewey Finn and School of Rock as a live-action musical-comedy series based on the 2003 film from Paramount Pictures. Nickelodeon ordered 13 eps of the series, scheduled to begin production this fall and premiere in the spring of 2015. Casting will be announced shortly. School of Rock will follow the misadventures of a down-on-his-luck rocker who poses as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. School of Rock will be written by Jim and Steve Armogida (Crash & Bernstein, My Family), who will also serve as exec producers and show runners. The movie’s director Richard Linklater and producer Scott Rudin will produce the TV series.

DHX Media’s Emmy-nominated production company Epitome Pictures (Degrassi, Instant Star) is starting production today on Open Heart, a new original teen, live-action drama series, commissioned by YTV and TeenNick and developed in association with marblemedia. Newcomer Karis Cameron stars as Dylan Blake in the mystery series, which is folded into a sprawling family saga set against the high-stakes workplace drama of a hospital.
