IN THE NEWS

NBC execs have held preliminary discussions about giving the 10p hour to local TV stations. The move, should it happen, could take place in fall 2023 at the earliest, and push the start time of the net’s late-night block to 10:30p or 11p, from 11:30p. “We are always looking at strategies to ensure that our broadcast business remains as strong as possible,” said an NBC spokesperson. “As a company, our advantage lies in our ability to provide audiences with the content they love across broadcast, cable and streaming.” The news was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

E! has canceled talk shows “Daily Pop” and “Nightly Pop.” As part of a restructuring, NBCU is creating a “centralized” umbrella brand, Terrace Studios, that will incorporate the Access and E! News brands. The daytime talk show will end in mid-September and the late-night talker will close out in early October, with a new nightly show slated to debut in late October.

Netflix opted not to renew “Resident Evil” for season two. The futuristic horror series debuted on July 14 with a respectable 72.7 million hours viewed, but fell off the top 10 streaming chart after three weeks.

As Serena Williams prepares to “evolve away” from tennis, she and her sister Venus Williams have accepted a wild card to play doubles at the US Open, set to begin today. The Williams sisters won the US Open doubles tournament in 1999 and 2009, and last played there together in 2014. “The countdown has begun,” posted Serena Williams on Instagram. “I’m gonna relish these next few weeks.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

HBO renewed “House of the Dragon” for a second season. Hardly a tough call – the “Game of Thrones” prequel series premiered on August 21 to the largest audience for any new original series on HBO, with the first episode watched more than 20 million times across linear, On Demand and HBO Max platforms in the US.

ID and Discovery+ will expand their true crime partnership with Octavia Spencer, with “Feds.” The true-crime network and its streaming home announced the next collaboration in a multi-project deal with Spencer: a six-part series that takes viewers inside the FBI.

Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider has teamed with Magilla Entertainment for a docuseries focused on the efforts of Tipper Gore and the Parents Music Resource 37 years ago to excise so-called “obscene music.” The series include never-before-seen footage and sit-downs with artists and politicians.

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzue Molyneux-Logelin extended their relationship with 20th Television Animation. The co-creators will continue as executive showrunners on Fox’s “The Great North” and as writers and executive producers on the network’s “Bob’s Burgers,” as well as develop and produce new projects.

Jupiter Entertainment has partnered with Tyler Ward’s Song House for a music docuseries. The character-driven docuseries will follow Song House artists on their journey to create songs and make their dreams of stardom come true.

HBO’s “Succession” won for outstanding locations in a contemporary television series at the Location Managers Guild International Awards this weekend. Netflix’s “Stranger Things” took the trophy for outstanding locations in a period television series, while “Station Eleven” topped the field for outstanding television serial program, anthology or limited series.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Apple TV+ announced “Acapulco” will return on October 21. The bilingual comedy’s second season will star and be executive produced by Eugenio Derbez; the two-episode premiere will be followed by a new episode every Friday.

Netflix’s “Blockbuster” will premiere on November 3 with all ten episodes. The comedy follows an analog dreamer operating the last Blockbuster Video in America who fights to stay relevant. The workplace comedy stars Randall Park, Melissa Fumero, Tyler Alvarez, Madeleine Arthur, Olga Merediz, JB Smoove and Kamaia Fairburn.

STREAMING

Netflix is looking at a monthly price of $7 to $9 for its upcoming ad-supported tier, versus the current $15.49 rate for its most popular plan, according to Bloomberg. The ad option would reportedly have four minutes of commercials per hour before and during some programs.

Netflix is also developing features that allow members to play mobile games with one another, and be ranked on a leaderboard. The streamer launched the ability for users to create “game handles” last month and will continue to expand its gaming ambitions.

Peacock launched its first-ever virtual “DocFest,” an on-platform showcase celebrating the platform’s slate of documentaries. The lineup for the six-week virtual festival will feature six new Peacock Original titles. Between September 14 and October 19, one new title will drop every Wednesday in a dedicated collection on the streamer, with formats ranging from feature-length films to multi-part series.

Peacock is also keeping it real with “Made in Chelsea.” Seasons 18-24 of the UK reality series, following the lives of well-heeled twentysomethings in boroughs of London, dropped August 25.

CASTING

“Canada’s Drag Race” winner Priyanka was cast in OUTtv’s “Ezra.” The drag queen will make her acting debut in the gay vampire comedy alongside Luke Hutchie, Chelsea Clar, Matthew Finlan, Zoe De Grand Maison and Veronika Slowikowska.

SPORTS

With the WNBA semifinals underway, ESPN is reporting that the opening round of the WNBA playoffs ranked as the most-viewed in 15 years. Averaging 392,000 viewers, this year’s revised pairings delivered a 50% rise of the average for the first and second rounds in 2021. Disney Networks’ coverage of the postseason saw Storm/Aces and Sun/Sky square off yesterday, with games 2 and 3 running Wednesday and Sunday. If-necessary, games 4 and 5 will be played on Sept. 6 and 8.

MLB booked its ticket to South Korea for a four-game “2022 Korea Series,” featuring Major Leaguers and players of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), from Nov. 9-16. The event will be hosted in Busan at the Busan Sajik Baseball Stadium on Nov. 11-12 and at Seoul’s Gocheok Sky Dome on Nov. 14-15. The Korea Series will mark the first time that Major League players have traveled to the country to play games since 1922.

In sponsorship news, NASCAR and Stanley Black & Decker are bringing the Craftsman brand back as the title sponsor of the NASCAR Truck Series beginning in 2023. The company previously served as the series’ title sponsor from its inception in 1995 to 2008. Stanley Black & Decker will further expand its presence in the sport, entering into a multi-year partnership designating the company and its iconic brands as the “Official Tools Partner of NASCAR” and “Official Tools” of all NASCAR-owned and operated tracks.

Chase is serving up a bevy of activations at the US Open, including the Chase Lounge, Chase Pass and Chase Terrace. Additionally, Chase will be hosting Finals weekend viewing parties in the South Plaza and providing fans with complimentary grounds passes to enjoy the Men’s and Women’s Singles Finals. Fans will be able to take their photos with the US Open Championship trophies and receive free giveaway items.

Audi is joining the Formula 1 World Championship starting with the 2026 season as a power unit supplier. “I am delighted to welcome Audi to Formula 1, an iconic automotive brand, pioneer and technological innovator,” said F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali, who worked for Volkswagen for a stint starting in 2014. “This is a major moment for our sport that highlights the huge strength we have as a global platform that continues to grow.

GOING GLOBAL

Disney Star won TV and digital rights to the International Cricket Council’s men’s and women’s global events through the end of 2027. The winning bid was “a significant uplift to the rights fee from the previous cycle, continuing the impressive growth and reach of cricket,” said the ICC. Earlier this year, Viacom18 snapped up rights to a cricket package from the Indian Premier League for nearly $3 billion.

All3Media International announced a new local adaptation of “Who Bares Wins,” set to premiere in Belgium. The format follows a group of celebrities who get naked to raise awareness for cancer. Originally created by Spun Gold, the Belgian adaptation is a co-production with All3Media International Belgium and I Care NL, commissioned by VRT.
