Just ahead of its first season finale, TLC renewed Dr. Pimple Popper for another go. The series has ranked No. 1 among W25-54 in its Wednesday 10p time slot; new episodes are slated to begin airing in January.

NBC greenlit  a political murder mystery drama from The Art of More creator Chuck Rose, director-producer Julie Anne Robinson and Universal TV, where Rose and Robinson are both under overall deals. Rose will write the untitled project about a series of murders that are predicted on a radical conspiracy blog, putting the blogger in the crosshairs of an NSA agent.

 DIGITAL DATA

Twice-daily live mobile quiz show HQ Trivia launched an app on Apple TV that lets users watch the show as well as vote with the Apple TV remote. The mobile app has been downloaded over 12.5 million times by Android and iOS users, according to Sensor Tower. Still, the app has fallen in ranking from the #1 U.S. trivia game to #10, according to App Store Annie’s count; the new version should help goose those numbers.

Using a privacy setting that is supposed to keep Google from storing your location data doesn’t necessarily mean your movements aren’t being recorded, according to an Associated Press investigation. Even if location history is paused, some Google apps store time-stamped location data, the AP found. “There are a number of different ways that Google may use location to improve people’s experience, including: Location History, Web and App Activity, and through device-level Location Services,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement to the AP. “We provide clear descriptions of these tools, and robust controls so people can turn them on or off, and delete their histories at any time.” True, said the report, but deleting location markers is “a painstaking process.”

Chassy Media is launching a channel on free, ad-supported streaming service Pluto TV on August 21, featuring programming dedicated to car culture. Chassy was founded in 2016 by comedian/author Adam Corolla and Nathan Adams. “Being a vintage racer and lifelong car guy, I wanted to really make sure we were getting great content out to as many gear-heads and enthusiasts as possible,” Carolla said. “Launching an entire channel on a free streaming service like Pluto TV, to a built-in audience, is a win on every level.”

Media company Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment is launching into the SVOD space with the signing of an agreement to acquire Pivotshare, a global SVOD service offering channels online across a variety of categories. “This multi-channel online network comes with pre-existing content, much of which fits with the Chicken Soup for the Soul brand,” said William Rouhaha Jr., chairman and CEO.

Facebook acquired tech firm Vidpresso, part of a continued push to shift its users away from passive video experiences and toward more interactive content. According to TechCrunch, Facebook is buying Vidpresso’s seven-person team and its tech, but not the actual company. In a blog post, Vidpresso said joining Facebook could help the company fully realize its vision for making live streaming video more interactive.
Bluprint, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment’s subscription service and digital destination for lifestyle learning, is debuting a new slate of original content and programming designed for kids, parents and families. Content includes family friendly reality competition series Doodle Wars, cooking show Pizza Revolution with Chef Fabio Viviani, and “classes” Jump Into: Drawing, Jump Into: Knitting and Jump Into: Embroidery.
The share of TV channels tuned by the average American household has fallen to about 7%, according to a Research Intelligencer analysis of new estimates from Nielsen. The number is about half the percentage of channels tuned by the average American household a decade ago and reflects the expansion of the linear TV universe, but does not factor in the expanding supply of non-linear TV options, including over-the-top, SVOD, and other new digital channels of video programming.

According to research from Strategy Analytics, more than one billion Connected TV devices are now in use worldwide. Smart TVs have been consistently gaining share in the market and now stand at nearly 60% of the total installed base of devices. Samsung is level with Sony at the top of the rankings in terms of overall Connected TV device units installed, and the Korean company is poised to take the lead in the second half of 2018.

Discovery’ s Motor Trend App is set to premiere a new season of Garage Squad starting Wednesday, August 22 before it windows on Velocity on Wednesday, August 29 at 9p.

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

Ad tech company TripleLift is aiming for custom branded content budgets with a new product it is testing, ContentDial, which has a proprietary analytics platform intended to help brands calculate what kind of content would be most effective on which websites and social media accounts. “When speaking with brands and agencies, their digital investments are either going programmatic, or branded content, which we previously hadn’t applied our technology towards,” Ari Lewine, TripleLift’s cofounder and chief strategy officer, told Business insider. “Basically, we can start to understand how content will perform before it’s even published.”

CASTING

CBS All Access tapped Ethan Peck (10 Things I Hate About You) to portray Spock in Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.
