08/07/19: NBC Sports laid out broadcast plans for the 2019-2020 season

Good morning. It’s Wednesday August 7, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

NBC Sports iced in its NHL regular season plans, offering fans 109 games this year starting Oct. 2 at 8p with a battle between the Blues and Caps. NBC Sports’ 2019-20 NHL schedule is highlighted by the second season of “Wednesday Night Hockey” on NBCSN that will include 14 doubleheaders and showcase nearly 75% of NHL teams this season, including multiple appearances by Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, Colorado, Dallas, and Vegas. The defending champion St. Louis Blues will make four “Wednesday Night Hockey” appearances, while the runner-up Boston Bruins will have three appearances. NBC Sports will present 12 NHL games on NBC, beginning with the 2019 DiscoverNHL Thanksgiving Showdown on Nov. 29.
 
Other programming highlights include the 2020 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic between the Predators/Stars from Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas on Jan. 1 on NBC. In addition, NBC Sports will present exclusive primetime coverage of the 2020 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game between the Kings/Avalanche on Feb. 15, 2020. NBC Sports will present coverage of the 2020 NHL All-Star Weekend on Jan. 24-25, highlighted by live coverage of the All-Star Game on Jan. 25, in primetime on NBC.
 
 
PROGRAMMING

Big day for Twitch and basketball. First, USA Basketball and the National Basketball Association announced a streaming partnership with Twitch, making it the exclusive live streaming partner of USA Basketball. Beginning this summer, Twitch will stream all USA Men’s National Team exhibition games to fans globally, in addition to select USA Women’s National Team friendly games, Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Regionals and Nationals and the 2020 Nike Hoop Summit, as well as coverage of the men’s and women’s training camps and other USA Basketball events.  Twitch will offer the option to co-stream all events, giving fans a chance to connect with their community by offering their own commentary. Twitch will work closely with USA Basketball on additional content opportunities around each event to incorporate innovative elements, such as interactive custom overlays, to provide new fan engagement opportunities that further enhance the live game viewing experience.
 
In addition, the NBA announced that Twitch will exclusively stream select Jr. NBA Global Championship games. Overall, Twitch will live stream up to 76 games during the weeklong youth basketball tournament for the top 13- and 14-year-old boys and girls teams from around the world.
 
NBC Sports Washington and the Washington Redskins are getting innovative with a new partnership that will provide the NFL’s first interactive, predictive-gaming live television presentation of the team’s four preseason games. The pilot telecasts, titled Predict the Game, will feature free-to-play contests where fans can win $1,000 cash each quarter as well as other exciting second chance prizes starting Aug. 8 when the Redskins open the preseason at the Cleveland Browns at 7:30p. The enhanced experience on NBC Sports Washington Plus will feature Predict the Game elements and other interactive features, combined with real-time statistics and information, displayed on a graphic overlay surrounding the game telecast. The full audio, video and graphics from the regular live-game coverage, which will be available simultaneously on NBC Sports Washington, will be included in the alternate presentation.
 
Steve Nash is expanding his role with Turner Sports, and will join NBA on TNT as a contributor and evolving his season-long presence on B/R Football’s UEFA Champions League coverage. As part of his new NBA on TNT responsibilities, Nash will appear within the network’s Tuesday night coverage, providing standalone studio segments encompassing off-the-court features, player profiles and more.  The eight-time NBA All-Star will also make appearances at select NBA on TNT marquee events.
 
The Premier League returns to Telemundo platforms on Friday at 2:30p with European champions Liverpool hosting newly promoted Norwich City. Telemundo Deportes will carry over 140 live matches across Telemundo and Universo with an additional 80 matches available for streaming exclusively on digital platforms. Play-by-play commentary led by Andres Cantor, Sammy Sadovnik, Copan Alvarez, Eduardo Biscayart, Carlos Hermosillo and Manuel Sol.

Stadium announced plans to televise 22 high school football games. The 11-week schedule will begin on Aug. 15 at 9p with a “Thursday Night Lights” matchup between Utah’s Corner Canyon High School and Orem High School with the slate wrapping up on Nov. 1 at 10:30p with a “Friday Night Rivals” showdown between Fresno rivals Tulare Union High School and Tulare Western High School. Matchups will span a dozen states including Alabama, California, Florida, Nebraska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Nevada, Utah, North Carolina and Wisconsin.
 
Southeastern Conference official Matt Austin, who spent nearly two decades in the profession officiating games across three conferences before retiring earlier this year, has joined ESPN and SEC Network as an Officiating Analyst for college football. He will contribute weekly to SEC games and studio shows from SEC Network’s studios in Charlotte, providing analysis to go along with the network’s robust college football programming.
 
SiriusXM kicks off coverage of the 2019-20 English Premier League soccer season on Friday, and will offer talkSPORT’s live play-by-play broadcasts of multiple EPL matches each week throughout the season on SiriusXM radios, the SiriusXM app and web player on SiriusXM.com. SiriusXM listeners will have access to games involving all 20 EPL clubs with matches running on SiriusXM FC.
 
FloSports and the University of Massachusetts Athletics, with multimedia rightsholder UMass Sports Properties of Learfield IMG College, announced a two-year broadcast partnership. FloSports will provide live coverage and on-demand coverage of all six of the program’s 2019 home football home games at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on FloFootball.com.
 
Sony Pictures Networks India Private Limited retained the exclusive media rights for the UFC in a deal that runs until 2023. The extended partnership sees fans able to watch the live telecast of all the UFC Fight Nights and PPVs.

LA Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park announced American Airlines as its first partner, where the brand will serve as a Founding Partner of LASED, the Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams. As a part of the agreement, the airline will serve as the exclusive naming rights partner of American Airlines Plaza, a 2.5-acre two-level open-air space that serves as a main entrance into the stadium and performance venue. American Airlines Plaza will also be the main entry point into an adjacent VIP entrance, which opens into a three-level lobby inside the stadium.
 
MLB locked in the third annual Players’ Weekend returns to MLB ballparks on August 23-25, where players will showcase their passions, backgrounds and interests by putting their own personal touches on what they wear and equipment they use during Players’ Weekend. Players have selected nicknames for themselves to be on the backs of their jerseys, and are given the chance to design, wear and use creatively colored and decorated equipment including bats, spikes, batting gloves, wristbands, compression sleeves and catcher’s equipment. 30 players, one representing each Club, have been named Players’ Weekend Ambassadors and will take the team-lead in championing the initiative and their teammates’ efforts. New to Players’ Weekend this year will be an expansion of mobile device usage. Prior to the National Anthem, players will be permitted to use their personal handheld mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, on the field or in the dugout to promote the event via social media.
 
Laureus USA announced details for the second annual Laureus Fashion Show Gala on Sept. 10 at Mercedes-Benz Manhattan, featuring star athletes and Olympians walking the runway to support Laureus’ mission to improve the lives of youth and unite communities through the power of sport. Athletes participating will include Tony Hawk, Jesse Palmer, Nadia Comaneci, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Malcolm Mitchell, Sanya Richards-Ross, Marcus Allen, Dwight Howard, Edwin Moses, Paul Rabil, and more.  The gala will feature musical guest Doug E Fresh and DJ Dee Wiz.
 
Oakley announced a partnership with Pittsburgh Steelers’ wide receiver, JuJu Smith-Schuster. JuJu will be the second-ever football player to join Team Oakley, alongside Patrick Mahomes II of the Kansas City Chiefs.
 
 
DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

Genius Sports Group was awarded the exclusive right to collect official Serie A betting data in stadia from the start of the 2019/20 season. The data will be captured using the Group’s pitchside technology and instantaneously distributed as a live feed to licensed sportsbook operators outside of Italy via its sports betting arm, Betgenius. To provide enhanced control and visibility over the use of its betting data, Serie A will launch its first rights enforcement initiative, including the identification and ejection of unauthorised data collectors operating in-stadia.
 
TickPick announced a $40 million investment from PWP Growth Equity. This will be TickPick’s first institutional funding round. The investment will allow TickPick to accelerate its marketing and business development initiatives and establish a data team to further improve its customer service by utilizing machine learning and artificial intelligence. As part of the investment, Mr. McKee and Chip Baird will be joining TickPick’s Board of Directors.
 
 
ESPORTS

Esports org Gen.G closed a partnership with Bumble, the “women-first” social networking app with over 65 million users worldwide, to form Gen.G’s first ever all-women esports team, Gen.G Empowered by Bumble (Team Bumble). Through the deal, the two brands will also develop new platforms to drive empowerment in the gaming community. Bumble has now added a ‘gaming’ badge that Bumble BFF users can easily showcase on their profiles. Gamers on Bumble BFF can now filter their matches to find other gamers to connect with in their communities. In addition, Bumble will become an official partner for Kristen Valnicek (@KittyPlays), Gen.G’s Head of New Gaming Initiatives, as well as partner to #TeamKitty, a network of hundreds of women gamers and streamers organized by KittyPlays. Gen.G and Bumble will develop custom content and deploy a series of activations including co-hosted events, live-streaming opportunities and more, utilizing KittyPlays and #TeamKitty.
