With the dust settled after the best Fortnite players in the world met in New York City last weekend to compete in the $30 million Fortnite World Cup Solo and Duos Finals, Epic Games is reporting massive numbers from the event. In addition to over 19,000 fans attending the sold-out event, Sunday saw the Solo Finals reel in concurrent viewership of over 2.3 million across YouTube and Twitch, making the Fortnite World Cup the most-watched competitive gaming event (excluding China) of all time. In addition, Epic Games also announced the Fortnite Champion Series, starting with Fortnite’s upcoming Season X, with players competing weekly with the goal of becoming Fortnite Season X Champions with millions of dollars at stake. Epic is also adding a leaderboard so players can track their progress and follow their favorite players in the quest to become Season Champs. 
 
 
COMPETITION AND VENUES

 
Las Vegas once again welcomes the official Evo back to the spotlight this weekend, with play running Aug. 2-4. Event organizers released times for the stream schedule with the following Top 8 finals: Friday – Soul Calibur VI (8p PT); Saturday – Under Night In-Birth Exe: Late[st] (10a PT), Dragonball FighterZ (noon PT), Samurai Shodown (4p PT); Mortal Kombat 11 (8p PT); Sunday – Blazblue Cross Tag Battle (9a PT); Street Fighter V (noon PT), Tekken 7 (3:30p PT), and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (7p PT).

 

RFRSH made its split with Astralis and Origen official, confirmed a report from HLTV.org that the two clubs are now operating under a new company called ‘RFRSH Teams.” RFRSH Entertainment CEO Nikolaj Nyholm stated that that the company will now focus solely “on the BLAST Pro Series and other BLAST properties. The management behind RFRSH Teams is also expecting “extensive interest from outside investors” in the company. “We’re proud of the sports performance model and infrastructure we brought to Astralis (and Origen),” Nyholm posted. “Now it is time for the teams to stand on their own legs. Astralis is profitable and Origen among the three best League teams in the West, easily top brands for the next 50+ years.”


Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment are opening the doors to the Apex Legends Preseason Invitational, a large scale esports tournament featuring the largest collection of competitive talent ever for an Apex Legends event and running Sept. 13-15 in in Kraków, Poland. Eighty teams will participate with three players per team in a bracketed tournament for a prize pool of $500,000.
 
MMA promotion ONE Championship is starting to roll out its vision for the company’s foray into esports, announcing a familiar face who will be leading the charge, as well as a partnership for its upcoming events. Carlos Alimurung, who served as Chief Business Officer for Battlefy, is joining the company to serve as CEO of ONE Esports with the company’s first events set to take place in October in Tokyo and December in Singapore. ONE Esports’ first ONE Dota 2 Singapore World Pro Invitational, organized in partnership with PGL, will take place this year on December 20-22 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, followed by our second ONE Dota 2 Jakarta World Pro Invitational on April 17-19 next year at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition. Each invitational will see the best 12 teams from around the world compete for a prize pool of $500,000. In addition, ONE Esports will host the very first ONE Tekken Tokyo Invitational and the ONE Street Fighter Tokyo Challenge in Tokyo on October 5-6.
 
The Hearthstone Esports team revealed changes for Grandmasters Season 2, set to start on Aug. 23. To create a unique schedule for Season 2 while ensuring the most competitive matches, each region’s two divisions are being restructured, with the 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th place finishers from Season 1 swapping divisions. Details on possible changes to promotion and relegation, Hearthstone Qualifiers and the Masters Tour, tournament structure in 2020, and more will be revealed in the coming weeks.
 
Overwatch Contenders is gearing up for The Gauntlet: a showcase of the top non-Overwatch League talent in the world and running Oct. 9-13 out of Seoul. Teams headed to the Gauntlet will include those that perform well in the Contenders China, Europe, Korea, North America, and Pacific Season 2 Playoffs, which end September 1. Eight of the ten teams will be split into two groups of four (Group A and Group B), which will be played out in a double-elimination bracket. One team will be eliminated from each group, and the rest will be seeded into an eight-team Finals Bracket.
 
Electronic Arts and the NFL are giving a facelift to the EA SPORTS Madden NFL 20 Championship Series and announced that this year’s MCS will look to bolster the connection to the sport as all four Madden NFL Major tournaments occur during key NFL moments – the NFL Kickoff, the NFL playoffs push, the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft. Additionally, official NFL partners Pizza Hut and SNICKERS will serve as official MCS sponsors. The Madden NFL 20 Classic will kickoff play from August 30-September 1, serving as an open registration format featuring the largest competitor pool in the history of this event. Held at Esports Stadium Arlington and running on the Madden NFL Twitch and YouTube channels. In addition to the Madden NFL 20 Classic, fans can compete to represent one of the 32 NFL teams in the Madden NFL 20 Club Championship December 18-21. Next is the Madden NFL 20 Challenge occurring January 30-February 1 during Super Bowl weekend. The Madden NFL 20 Bowl concludes the MCS season during the NFL Draft April 23-25.
 
At the PUBG Mobile Club Open, Tencent announced the launch of the PUBG Mobile World League. The new org is slated to debut in 2020 with more info to be released in the months ahead.
 
The upcoming Call of Duty franchised league announced its revamped format, that will see its teams sport home-and-away games when it launches as a city-based league in 2020 “We’re thrilled that the future of ‘Call of Duty’ esports will bring more competitive events to fans in cities around the globe,” CoD Esports Commissioner Johanna Faries said in a statement.  “With seven teams already signed on, we anticipate a robust slate of events held in all home markets.”
 
Looking to take scholastic esports competitions to the next level, the Electronic Gaming Federation and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex will host the national interscholastic high school esports championship tournament from June 12-14, 2020. Teams will earn their way into the national championship by advancing through a series of regional qualifying events in fall 2019 and spring 2020. Additional details, including top teams and tournament format, will be announced in the coming weeks.
 
Square Enix and Bulkhead Interactive mapped out its esports plans for The Battalion 1944, including an investment of $650,000 of tournament and competition support. Multiple Battalion esports events are in the works, including a FACEIT Pro Series, geared towards pro level teams a major with online qualifiers; championships played in multiple regions, Blitzkieg Premier and Open League support, as well as online tournament support.

Last weekend, the Fortnite World Cup came to New York bringing thousands of participants to watch gamers compete for a $30M dollar prize pool. In live streaming, competitive play was broadcasted across 4 major platforms, and 23 unique channels. Many these channels were user generated content (UGC) Co-Streams, where influencers rebroadcast premium content to drive engagement within their communities. This week Stream Hatchet measures the cross-platform impact of the FWC and the share of UGC by platform:
  • The Fortnite World Cup was the 2nd most watched esports competition this year (2019): The Fortnite World Cup generated 44.8M H. Watched, placing it 21.3M hours behind the 2019 season of the Overwatch League (62.8M).
  • Twitch and YouTube dominate Esports Market Share: While Mixer and Facebook generated a combined 1/4M H. Watched, their hours only accounted for 1.3% of the total hours watched (Twitch 53% & YouTube 44%) 
  • YouTube leads in premium, Twitch leads in UGC: YouTube pulled ahead of Twitch in premium channels generated 1.4M more hours watched, Twitch UGC generated 2.7 times as many hours watched as YouTube. UGC Co-Streaming accounted for 36% of the total hours watched.

The Kellogg Company is entering the amateur esports space through a new partnership with N3rd Street Gamers, sponsoring a new Overwatch esports tournament with its Cheez-It Grooves product. The tournament, a “Major” in NSG’s National Championship Series will begin on October 4, in Denver. NSG and Kellogg’s will also host National Championship Series Academy Tier events in markets including Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Spokane and Colorado Springs. In addition, Kellogg’s is hosting Gaming and Snacking watch parties for The Overwatch League Grand Finals in select Wal-Mart stores nationwide. Shoppers will enjoy Cheez-It Grooves, Pringles and Rice Crispy treat samples, while watching The Overwatch League Grand Finals.
 
NFL partners Pizza Hut and SNICKERS will serve as official MCS sponsors. MCS Major live tournaments will occur in Pizza Hut Stadium – the new home of competitive Madden NFL with Pizza Hut Stadium serving as the first-ever official virtual stadium rights deal in esports. SNICKERS will return for another season and continue to surround the biggest plays and most memorable moments of the MCS.
 
ADATATechnology formed a long-term partnership with Team J.Storm and will be sponsoring the esports team with the latest XPG products, including “the world’s first dual-driver gaming headset, the XPG PRECOG gaming headset.” J.Storm is a professional North America-based esports team headed by NBA star Jeremy Lin and consists of two squads, one dedicated to Dota 2 and one to Fortnite.

Sportradar and Riot Games are aligning for an integrity services partnership. Under the terms of the deal, Sportradar Integrity Services will monitor the global betting activity taking place with relation to domestic and international League of Legends esports competitions organized by Riot Games and report any potential integrity issues to the company. Sportradar Integrity Services will also be providing Riot Games with access, as needed, to its specialized Intelligence and Investigation Services unit, and the companies will work together to review the esports organizer’s in-house integrity policies, procedures, and future educational programs for professional esports competitors.
 
StreamMetrics announced the launch of StreamMetrics Audience Measurement, a new syndicated data service that “demystifies livestream and esports viewership by accurately measuring audience size, demographics, and engagement, providing geographically-relevant data to advertisers, sponsors and brands, game publishers, esports tournament organizers, networks, and leagues.” HBSEV, the investment arm of Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, a portfolio of global sports and entertainment properties that includes the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils, led StreamMetrics’ series seed investment round.

Houston real estate investor Lee Zieben reportedly agreed to terms to with Immortals Gaming Club to by the Houston Outlaws for a deal value of $40 million, according to ESPN, with the deal expected to close later this month. According to the article, Zieben has a binding letter of intent with Immortals for the purchase, according to sources with paperwork submission and approval of the Overwatch League still pending. Immortals sells the team after they acquired Infinite Esports & Entertainment, the parent of the Outlaws in June.
 
Gen.G Esports is partnering with Meta Threads in a deal that will see the company produce Gen.G-branded gaming apparel, beginning with the Gen.G 2019 Pro Jersey. “We’re really excited to work with Meta Threads to expand our merchandise offering in the U.S.,” said Gen.G. COO Arnold Hur. “They are a great partner for us and will help us continue to build and reach out to a unique fanbase around the world. We’ve got a lot of exciting plans ahead for all our fans.”
