Behavioral Data: Behavioral Data is data that’s collected about an individual’s behavior, to be used for marketing purposes. In digital marketing, behavioral data is mostly collected online, though there are offline sources of behavioral data as well. Among other types of behavioral data, marketers often record activity and comments on social media and on websites. Behavioral data can be used for online personalization, and for ad targeting.
Facebook had another solid quarter. The social media giant took in $6.44 billion in revenue during Q2, a huge uptick over 2015’s $4 billion in second quarter revenue. The haul easily beat analyst’s expectations. Facebook’s net income for the quarter was $2 billion, compared to $719 million in Q2 of 2015. Facebook also had a lot to boast about in terms of usage: The company had 1.71 billion active users by the end of June, compared to 1.49 billion a year ago. A significant chunk of Facebook’s revenue growth came from mobile advertising, which now makes up 84% of all of its ad revenue. A year ago, it was 76%.
The International Olympic Committee has set August 21 – the final day of this year’s Games – as the date when it will launch the Olympic Channel, an Internet-video destination. With the new channel, the IOC intends to sustain interest in the Olympics and its athletes even after the event has concluded. The Olympic Channel will feature global content, including short- and long-form original programming focused on sports coverage, athletes, news and highlights. It will go live after the Closing Ceremony, launching via mobile apps for iOS and Android, and at olympicchannel.com.
Cynopsis Digital Exclusive: The vampire-themed YouTube drama series Carmilla has been greenlit for a third season. The series, made for Kimberly-Clark’s U by Kotex, will go into production for season three beginning next month. The production company Smokebomb Entertainment partnered with the branded entertainment agency Shift2 on the series, which debuted in 2014. “For the most part commercials are still thirty seconds of people yelling at you with a blowhorn,”
said Jay Bennett, Smokebomb’s SVP of Creative and Innovation, in a phone call with Cynopsis Digital. “Branded entertainment is a conversation with the audience, and I think that’s the power it has.” Carmilla was the only brand-funded series to be nominated in the Best Drama category at least year’s Streamy Awards, and was recently nominated at Cannes Lions for best web series.

A new eMarketer report projects that total programmatic TV spend will more than double over the next few years. According to the report, ad spend on programmatic TV will reach $2.16 billion next year, a leap from $710 million in 2016. And eMarketer projects $4.4 billion worth of programmatic TV spending by 2018. As for digital, eMarketer projects that programmatic spending on digital video ads will reach $5.51 billion in 2016, accounting for 56% of all digital video ad spending.
The programmatic advertising marketplace AdSupply announced a partnership with BidSwitch, a company that connects platforms in the global programmatic ecosystem. Under the partnership, AdSupply will be integrated with Bidswitch, with the aim of boosting demand for AdSupply’s inventory. According to the companies, BidSwitch processes 20 terabytes of data and listens to 100 billion bid requests daily, enabling a real-time view of the programmatic ecosystem.
PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Netflix has set a premiere date for its Gilmore Girls revival. The new season, which will consist of four 90-minute episodes, is slated to premiere November 25. The show’s original creator, Amy Sherman Paladino, will EP, direct, and write the four episodes in partnership with her husband, Daniel Palladino.
Discovery has released The Satchel, its first scripted VR short form mini-series. The four-part series tells the story of a man who goes for a coffee date with a mysterious woman holding a suspicious satchel. The Satchel was made in partnership with Toyota. The series is available via the Discovery VR app for Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear VR, and Oculus Rift.

Big Boots Studios announced the upcoming launch of The Gnome Life, a new entertainment content brand geared toward fandom and geek culture. The Gnome Life’s content will first be distributed across a new website, as a well as a new YouTube channel. The brand will then spread across more media and platforms, including an iOS app (now in development) as well as several Video Enhanced Graphic Novels. The Gnome Life will feature live action and animated content including episodic series, features, games, and VR. The first phase of content will be a wholly owned library of more than 16 graphic novel titles.
A&E, HISTORY, and Lifetime content is now available via the Google Chromecast, per an announcement from A + E Networks. The free, ad-supported content from the three networks includes full episodes, exclusive clips, and movies.
According to the new Social Media Advertising Report from Advertiser Perceptions, big advertisers are now spending 24% of their digital ad budgets on social media. Moreover, 47% of big advertisers plan to boost their social media spends over the next six months. Notably, Advertiser Perceptions finds that a large majority of social media ad spending by brands is focused on building brand awareness, as opposed to “performance” (i.e., advertising designed to generate an immediate action). Just 38% of respondents said that they’re using social media to spur offline sales.

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming for July 20 through July 26 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Trends and insights from the 3,846,893 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– Viewers were heavily anticipating both the Republican National Convention and the Democratic National Convention, with broadcasts from both events across multiple networks receiving 23.5% of all “excited” ERs. Most recently, 12% of the ERs about the Monday broadcasts of the DNC mentioned First Lady Michelle Obama’s well-received speech.
– Outside of politics, USA Network had people going nuts with 5.8% of all “crazy” ERs, driven largely by WWE matches that included a thrilling championship battle between Charlotte and Sasha Banks.
– Politics aside, VH1 brought the laughs, garnering 5.5% of “funny” ERs across all networks thanks to a humorous episode of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta.
– Once again outside of politics, ABC pulled viewers’ heartstrings with 7% of “sad” ERs across all networks, due to an episode of The Bachelorette.
Pinterest has nabbed one of Snapchat’s top ad execs. Gunnard Johnson will now serve as Pinterest’s Head of Measurement Science and Insights. He’d only been with Snapchat since March, serving as Head of Quantitative Ads Research. Johnson told Business Insider that, as compared to his Snapchat position, the Pinterest job is “better aligned” with his “personal view of the future of advertising research…as it brings together insights, measurement, and data science within sales as well as the product and engineering functions.”
The video ad network TremorVideo has hired Jeanne Houweling as its new VP of Programmatic Demand Partnerships. In the new role, Houweling will work to develop partnerships with real-time bidding-enabled demand platforms and trade desks. Houweling previously ran her own consulting firm, Jeanne Houweling Media & Ad Technology Consulting.
