07.23.14

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 23, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Apple received a patent for its smartwatch yesterday, which will be called iTime. The watch should hit shelves in October, and will be the first new product launch under CEO Tim Cook since he took over the late Steve Jobs’ position in 2011. The watch will interact with computers, tablets and smartphones, and consumers will have the ability to check texts, emails, weather and (most obvious) the time. Additionally, Apple posted a $7.7 billion profit and 37.4 billion in revenue in its earnings report, more than the $7.49 billion that analysts predicted, but not quite the $38 billion revenue expected.

Microsoft beat revenue predictions during its earnings report yesterday, with revenue of $23.38 billion but a profit that fell short at $4.61 billion. Analysts forecast $23.01 billion revenue and a $5.04 billion profit. The company recently announced it will lay off 18,000 jobs in the next 12 months.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

FullScreen’s comedic YouTube duo, Fine Bros., introduced the new React channel that will run daily content from its talent from Elders React, Teens React and Kids React series. The trio of series will continue being posted to The Fine Bros’ main channel (9.3 million subs) twice a week. Their company, Fine Bros. Entertainment, is also working on a 13-ep series for Nickelodeon’s new series based on the YT hit, called ReactToThat.

Starting next month, MTV, VH1, CMT and Spotify will partner up to bring music from the network’s shows and major events to fans. The deal will position Spotify at the forefront of music services that the networks utilize, with playlists from TEEN Wolf, Love and Hip Hop, Party Down South, MTV Video Music Awards and others integrated into its sites and apps. “MTV opened up the world of music to me as I was growing up," Spotify Founder & CEO Daniel Ek said. "Being able to connect a whole new generation to music through streaming on MTV, VH1 and CMT sites and apps will bring an amazing experience to Spotify users."

Discovery Digital Network’s SourceFed creator Ross Everett launched a new daily series for the network’s Revision 3 channel, called The New Show. The series explores buzz-worthy topics in a satirical way, like in the first episode released yesterday, titled Glee Forced to Change its Name and Why That’s Dumb. A new episode will be available everyday on Revision 3 and YouTube.
