DIGITAL DOINGS

Looks like the cable companies aren’t about to cede the OTT TV space to new media companies like Google and Hulu. Charter Communications and CenturyLink have both thrown their hats into the ring, launching “skinny bundle” services for cord-cutters. (As previously reported, Comcast is gearing up to launch its own digital TV service in Q3 of this year.) Charter’s service – called Spectrum Stream – comes equipped with local broadcast channels and 25 cable channels, and costs $20 per month. CenturyLink Stream, meanwhile, comes with over 45 channels, and costs $45 per month.

Public perception research firm YouGov BrandIndex just rolled out a new survey, ranking the brands that grew their customer bases the most over the past year. Digital media companies were all over the list. Instagram came in second; the Facebook-owned app grew its customer base by 6 percent over the past year, according to the survey. Snapchat came in at fourth, Twitter at sixth, and Spotify at ninth. Topping the list was Uber, which grew its customers by 8.2 percent.

Snapchat just added some significant new features. The messaging app will now let users upgrade video snaps with voice-changing effects without having to use an animated lens. And Snapchat will also let users add illustrated backdrops to photos. But most importantly, Snapchat is adding a new tool – called Paperclip – that will allow users to add outbound links to their photos and videos. It’s a feature that’s been widely requested, especially by influencers. In the past, Snapchat has erred toward cutting users off from other apps; Paperclip pokes a big hole in that isolation.

Digital alternatives may be putting a dent in Disney’s cable brands. As noted in new report from The Wall Street Journal, the Disney Channel and Freeform have each lost about four million subscribers over the past three years, leaving them with about 90 million each. (The numbers come from consulting firm SNL Kagan.) As the Journal notes, younger viewers have flocked to platforms like YouTube and Netflix over that same time period.
