With 83% of consumers report watching content on streaming platforms, AVODs are on the rise. In a survey from Piplsay, 50% of respondents reported switching from ad-free streaming services to ad supported streaming services – and most are not finding ads too disruptive. Among those with ad supported service, 49% said they were very satisfied, 41% said somewhat satisfied and 10% reported not being satisfied.
What’s the buzz at the annual Allen & Co. conference in Sun Valley? “The talk of the week is going to be that the industry is going to start consolidating a little bit more,” said Discovery CEO David Zaslav, set to oversee a Discovery/WarnerMedia merger. “We’re not done yet.” Other TV titans on hand at the annual media and tech event are Walt Disney Co. Executive Chairman Bob Iger and CEO Bob Chapek, Netflix co-CEOs Reed Hastings and Ted Sarandos, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, and NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell. ViacomCBS President and CEO Bob Bakish, who last attended the conference in 2017 will again be a no-show, but ViacomCBS chair Shari Redstone is on the scene.
NBCUniversal introduced new Global Content Innovations for brands across its global One Platform. Innovations include Diverse Storytellers, providing a platform for diverse artists, storytellers and content creators; CEO Series, featuring twelve CEOs who redefine what it means to be a leader; #ShesMy, a short form set of content pieces to help amplify the mission of non-profit organizations dedicated to lifting women up; and Story Pirates, dedicated to helping children hone their storytelling craft. “NBCUniversal not only brings marketers into the stories and IP that consumers crave, but gives them the ability to co-create that content themselves,” said Josh Feldman, CMO, NBCUniversal Advertising and Partnerships. “We strategically evolved our commitment to commercial innovation to go beyond ad loads and formats to include content opportunities that put marketers in the director seat.”
Most YouTube videos that viewers regretted watching had actually been recommended by the platform, according to a report from Mozilla Foundation’s “RegretsReporter” browser extension. Based on Regret reports submitted between July 2020 and May 2021, 71% of videos had been recommended to users, and recommended videos were 40% more likely to be regretted than those users searched for. “Our research suggests that the corporate policies and practices of YouTube, including the design and operation of their recommendation algorithms, is at least partially responsible for the regrettable experiences that our volunteers had on the platform,” said Mozilla in its report. “We believe our research has revealed is only the tip of the iceberg, and that each of these findings deserves and requires further scrutiny.”
Publicis Media has launched a new initiative, the Once & For All Coalition, to boost representation of underserved and ethnically diverse suppliers. Under the plan, Publicis Media and client participants will commit to increasing investment in minority owned and targeted media, as well as helping fund research, measurement, content creation and infrastructure solutions. Publicis Media will also invest $25 million in diverse content creation via its APX Content Ventures offering. “True equity requires sustainability and our goal with the Once & For All Coalition is to take a long-term approach, consistent with the population change and fast-rising majority,” said Lisa Torres, President, Cultural Quotient, Publicis Media.

ABC will air corporate sib ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” game of the week on August 8, as the Chicago Cubs host the first-place White Sox. The game will also stream on the ESPN app and air on ESPN Deportes.
TEGNA Inc.’s VERIFY brand, aimed at helping the public distinguish between true and false information, introduced hosts Gabe Cohen, Airane Datil and Brandon Lewis, who will write stories and produce content across multiple platforms. The VERIFY team, with help from questions submitted viewers, tracks the spread of stories or claims that need clarification or correction.
Discovery’s Shark Week and Nat Geo’s Shark Fest drive substantial tune-in from viewers who had not watched the networks in the prior 30 days. According to LG Ads, which analyzes tune-in from 20 million HHS, both Discovery Channel and National Geographic use their events to promote other on-network programming, and one-third of new viewers tune in to each network during the 30 days after the shark events, resulting in net new viewership of 13% for Discovery and 18% for Nat Geo.

Peacock handed a series order to “Pride & Prejudice: An Experiment in Romance.” The dating series will transport hopeful suitors to a “Bridgerton”-style Regency England (carriages, archery, handwritten letters), where they will try to win the heart of a heroine and her court. Cineflix Media, showrunner Morwyn Brebner and TV executive Andrew Akman are teaming to launch Husk Media, a new, Toronto-based television production company that will focus on projects created by Brebner, as well as projects in partnership with emerging and established writers and showrunners. Cineflix will provide start-up financing and operating support, and has a first-look to distribute the shingle’s content internationally.
Film and television producer-financier Starlings Entertainment and UK-based media company StoryFirst have formed a joint development fund covering premium drama and family entertainment. The fund will launch with The Manager, a semi-fictional account of life in the 1970’s and ’80’s music business, inspired by the lives – and featuring the music – of Eric Clapton and other great artists, and Sherlock’s Daughter, a murder mystery which tracks the daughter of the world’s greatest detective in her search for her father and what she discovers along the way.
For her next act, reality star/Hugh Hefner ex Kendra Wilkinson (“Kendra On Top”) will star in discovery+ real estate series, “Kendra Sells Hollywood.” The six-parter, following Wilkinson as she joins an LA real estate firm to take on Tinseltown, will debut in fall 2021.
Circle of Confusion Television Studios has acquired the television rights to the upcoming novel True Biz, by author and Deaf-rights activist Sara Nović. Millicent Simmonds (“A Quiet Place Part II”)) is set to star and executive produce the project, alongside Nović, and Brad Mendelsohn, Russ Buchholz and Charles Mastropietro. Tyler Knell, who brought the book to Circle of Confusion, will oversee the project for the studio.
Joy Bryant (“For Life”) and Henry Simmons (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”) will star in season two of OWN anthology drama series “Cherish the Day,” from ARRAY Filmworks and Warner Bros. Television. Production begins this month in New Orleans, with the new season expected to debut in 2022.

Donald Trump announced he will be the lead plaintiff in a class action lawsuit against Facebook, Google, and Twitter, “as well as their CEOs Mark Zuckerberg, Sundar Pichai and Jack Dorsey, three real nice guys,” said the former president on Wednesday. Among other things, the lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, reinstatement to the sites, and a declaration that Section 230 – which provides legal immunity for how tech platforms moderate their third-party content – is unconstitutional.
Ampersand announced a data and technology integration with data connectivity platform LiveRamp, giving clients the option to onboard their strategic audiences to build and activate custom audiences across screens via Ampersand’s AND Platform. Clients can build proprietary audience segments in the AND Platform using brand’s first party data, third party audiences from Polk and Experian, and/or Ampersand’s Viewership segments.
605 announced that it is the first to provide attribution services for all TV networks, advertisers and programmers participating in the Canoe addressable enablement initiative. Using 605 services, which will eventually include attribution product 605 IMP4CT, participants can analyze the effectiveness of their addressable TV advertising campaigns and measure their influence on consumer behavior. 605 can also combine ad exposure from Canoe enabled addressable campaigns with different delivery modalities, including digital, linear and data-driven linear, to provide unified cross-platform insights.
The Trade Desk announced the launch of its new trading platform, Solimar, aimed at helping marketers optimize their digital advertising campaigns across the open internet. Solimar addresses concerns including easy and secure onboarding of first-party data; the need to connect marketing performance to business growth goals; an increasingly cross channel digital media environment including CTV; and a rising focus on digital identity.
Publicis Media’s Starcom London team said it has developed and implemented an automated media booking bot. Called ABACUS (“automated bot for amendments to campaigns and uploads”), the bot processes and verifies key campaign details overnight. “Automation is a key part of our new intelligence-driven strategy,” said Starcom CEO Nadine Young. “ABACUS allows us to liberate our teams from the more repetitive administrative tasks and unleash further opportunity to focus on more strategic and creative growth opportunities for our clients.”

Blue Ant International has licensed more than 650 hours of programming to Pluto TV, including factual entertainment, specialist factual and documentaries. The programming will be available on Pluto’s live linear channels as well as VOD in the US, UK, LATAM territories and France.

Entertainment magazines were syndication’s best performers in a good week for access shows as summer got underway in the week ending June 27. “Entertainment Tonight” (2.0 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, up 11% from the week before) topped the genre, followed by “Access Hollywood” (0.8, up 14%) and “TMZ” (0.8, up 14%). “Extra” (four-week high 0.7, up 17%) scored an average 978,000 daily viewers. Elsewhere in the highly-viewed time periods, a second week with Savannah Guthrie at the podium resulted in an uptick for “Jeopardy!” (4.9, up 4%), while “Family Feud” (5.9, up 4%) continued to win among game shows.
During the week of June 28, Fox News Channel was the highest-rated cable news network in both total day and primetime viewers for the 20th week in a row, according to Nielsen. In primetime, FNC earned 2.2 million viewers, 340,000 among A25-54 and 209,000 A18-49 category. In total day, FNC was number one with total viewers in all of basic cable, delivering 1.2 million viewers, 209,000 A 25-54 demo and 123,000 A18-49 category.
