06.27.14 Good morning. It’s Friday, June 27, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The US Men Soccer Team’s advancement into the Round of 16 left a mark on media platforms. The game crashed servers as millions of fans looked to tune in on digital channels. WatchESPN viewership for the first half of the USA-Germany match hit more than 1.4 million concurrent viewers and caused “limited issues due to unprecedented demand.” Still, the match scored unprecedented numbers for the company. Twitter reports that there were 3 million Tweets about the contest during the game. Univision delivered another 750,000 live concurrent streams for the game, also a record for the company, according to Variety.
Moving forward, ESPN launches the Round of 16 matches on Saturday on ABC with Brazil/Chile at 11:30a (with Ian Darke and Steve McManaman on microphone duties) and Colombia/Uruguay at 3:30p (Jon Champion/Stewart Robson). Darke will also team with Taylor Twellman to call the Belgium/USA game on July 1 at 3:30p on ESPN.
BTN continues to expand, inking a deal with Comcast for distribution in New Jersey and Maryland, as the Big Ten prepares to officially welcome new members Rutgers and Maryland on July 1. BTN threw a party in New York Thursday night for 1,000 guests to celebrate the Big Ten Conference’s expansion to the East Coast as well as broader distribution for BTN. BTN President Mark Silverman joined Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany and a number of coaches, former student athletes and pro stars to celebrate the conference’s new additions. BTN is expected to have more than 60 million subscribers nationwide by the kickoff of the 2014 football season.
WWE and FOX Sports announced that Celebrating Champions: 2014 Special Olympics USA Games, a one-hour television event chronicling the 2014 USA Games, will air on FOX Sports 1 on Monday at 7p. The special is produced by WWE and will be hosted by Mike Hill and Molly McGrath of FOX Sports 1’s America’s Pregame. The special will spotlight six Special Olympics athletes as they travel from their hometowns to the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games and include highlights from the 2014 USA Games Opening Ceremony from Prudential Center in Newark.
Syndicated newsmagazine Extra is turning to the sports world to replace Maria Menounos. The series has tapped Charissa Thompson and Tracey Edmonds as special correspondents to join Mario Lopez, starting Sept. 8. Thompson, of course, has hosted FOX Sports Live for FOX Sports 1, and has also cohosted Numbers Never Lie and SportsNation for ESPN. Meanwhile, Edmonds, in addition to other projects, currently serves as an executive producer the Deion Sanders reality show on OWN.

Cablevision Systems expanded its Optimum TV lineup with the addition of Fight Network and FNTSY Sports Network, marking the first major U.S. cable TV provider to offer either channel. Fight Network is being placed on channel 464 while FNTSY Sports Network is on channel 147. Both networks are available as part of the Optimum Gold and Optimum Sports & Entertainment Pak.
Matt Lauer will talk to six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken-Rouen this morning on NBC’s TODAY in her first interview since the June 6 ATV accident that left her paralyzed. The interview comes from Craig Hospital in Englewood, Co. where Van Dyken-Rouen is currently undergoing rehab.
Del Mar will upgrade its signal in high definition this summer, allowing the track’s broadcast partner, TVG to offer all its racing from the seaside track in HD. TVG will utilize 17 HD cameras, wireless audio equipment on racing participants, multiple angles of photo finishes and virtual graphics that display betting and sponsorship information. FOX Sports and FOX Sports 1 also will now broadcast in HD.
The Luis Suarez suspension led the conversation a few hours prior to the USA vs. Germany game. As game time approached, the conversation switched to support the USA Men’s Team.
Jumping on the Bandwagon
Most of the World Cup sponsors continued to tweet actively during the USA vs. Germany game. However, some new brands joined the conversation that hadn’t initially been active, including Nivea Men, Fruit of the Loom (on Facebook, they garnered more than 15,000 likes and almost 700 shares), Scotts Lawn Care, Olay Skin Care, Clorox, Snickers, AT&T and Panasonic. As has been the case for all three USA pool play games, Degree Men was the most active brand during the game, tweeting 31 times during the game.
Lunch Break at 9am?
USA fans on the West Coast began taking early lunch breaks starting at 9am. USA Soccer tweeted an excuse letter to fans to give to their boss (more than 26,000 retweets and more than 12,000 favorites). Multiple brands leveraged the letter in their tweets. Trident Gum retweeted the letter, garnering almost 600 engagements. McDonalds leveraged USA Soccer’s letter to create their own, earning over 1200 engagements.
Will these “bandwagon” brands continue to stay socially active throughout the World Cup as the knockout stage begins or will they only resurface for the USA’s next game Tuesday on July 1, 2014?

Caterpillar inked a new deal for primary sponsorship of the Richard Childress Racing No. 31 car driven by Ryan Newman. The brand has been with the team for the past six years.
El Rey Network is leveraging the spirit of the World Cup into its promotion for upcoming series Matador, a soccer spy thriller. The initiative, dubbed Red Card Riot, allows fans to ‘call a foul’ on friends/colleagues/cultural incidents by sending them a personalized Red Card. The campaign was conceived by Campfire/SapientNitro with production by RED Interactive and SunnyBoy and media planning by Media Storm. Matador premieres July 15 at 9p on the channel.
BODYARMOR SuperDrink announced that USWNT forward Sydney Leroux will become the latest athlete join the BODYARMOR team as a stakeholder and endorser of the sports drink. Leroux joins names that include Kobe Bryant, Andrew Luck, Mike Trout, Richard Sherman, Buster Posey, Kevin Love, etc. as members of the roster and is the first female to join the list.
StubHub renewed its deal with ESPN to serve as the exclusive ticketing partner for the company and its digital properties, including desktop, mobile and apps. The three-year extension will run through 2017 and will see StubHub event links and seat maps integrated into ESPN digital content. In addition, ESPN and StubHub are working closely together on ways to enhance the content experience on both StubHub.com and across ESPN digital properties as well as around live events.
INDYCAR will now live stream all Verizon IndyCar Series practice activity for the remainder of the 2014 season on IndyCar.com. Verizon IndyCar Series qualifying and race activity will, of course, remain on NBCSN, and will continue to be streamed on NBC Sports Live Extra. The Verizon IndyCar Series practice live stream can be viewed at RaceControl.IndyCar.com.
NASCAR Digital Media announced that Colin Smith, Managing Director, NASCAR Digital Media, will now oversee day-to-day operations for the sanctioning body’s digital platform. Smith, who joined NASCAR in 2012 after a 17-year career at Raycom Sports, will be responsible for the entire digital platform which includes NASCAR.com as well as the tablet and mobile experience. John Martin, Managing Director, Digital and Business Operations for NDM will also take on additional responsibilities and report to Smith.
