NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Katie Couric‘s new anchor role with Yahoo is finally taking shape. Yahoo debuted the new Couric-hosted World 3.0 yesterday, featuring interviews with industry innovators from around the world. In the first episode, Couric talks to co-founder of Airbnb, Brian Chesky.

Comedy Central chose comedy web series BriTANick to adapt for TV, ordering a half-hour pilot starring series hosts Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney. The duo will write and produce, along with Arrested Development‘s Troy Miller. BriTANick, launched in 2008, has earned millions views on YouTube, CollegeHumor and Cracked.

Hulu will premiere the first three seasons of Canadian drama Blackstone; the 23 eps from Prairie Dog Film + Television will be available starting this July. 

Samsung acquired video discovery company Shelby.tv yesterday, only to announce it will shut down the struggling service July 1. Shelby.tv’s six-person team will remain, developing "new technology… as part of Samsung Electronics."

CONTENT MEDIA

VH1 announced the 24 finalists for its 24-hour live stream competition Make A Band Famous. The network picked musical acts from 15-second clip song submissions on Instagram; fans cast votes for acts on social media platforms. The event, hosted by The All-American Rejects lead singer Tyson Ritter, will start live streaming on June 11 at 8p ET at MakeABandFamous.VH1.com and on the VH1 app. The winner will be chosen during the live finale on July 12.

The Wall Street Journal reports Vineyard Vines and Shutterfly tested the new method this month.

On the heels of its $230 million advertising deal with Omnicom Media Group, Twitter has gained mobile native-ad tech outfit, Namo Media. The company will be integrated into its MoPub ad platform, which it acquired last October for $250 million.

TECHNOLOGY

Amazon is expected to reveal its highly-anticipated smartphone later this month. The online retail giant is hinting at "a new device unveiling" at its launch event in Seattle June 18, with a video showing actors reacting to something in their hands. The smartphone would have the ability to track a user’s eye movement and include a 3D display, according to the Wall Street Journal.

A new study from mobile video ad company, Vdopia, revealed movie ticket purchases through mobile devices grew 40 percent in the past year. "We’re finding that moviegoers are turning to their mobile devices for everything from movie discovery, planning and ticketing to social sharing," Fandango‘s President Paul Yanover told Cynopsis. "The study results are definitely consistent with the growth we are experiencing across our Fandango mobile platforms: year over year we’ve seen a 54 percent increase in mobile ticketing, and a 39 percent growth in video views on mobile for our movie trailers and original video." The research also showed mobile entertainment audiences are twice as likely to click on mobile ads, with a 45 percent recall rate.
