06.04.14 Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 4, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With history on the line, NBC Sports is doubling the number of hours dedicated to California Chrome’s run at the 146th Belmont Stakes this week. Coverage will see highlights that include: live coverage of every Saturday race in NBC/NBCSN telecast windows; California Chrome: The Unlikely Champion, a special 30-minute documentary narrated by Bob Costas; three hours of Belmont Classics; and Bob Costas’ essay on the Triple Crown. The company is also doubling down on promotion, with Today, CNBC and The Weather Channel offering live reports on-site at Belmont Park while MSNBC will air live updates Friday and Saturday, and SportsDash with Yahoo! Sports will be on-site Wednesday through Friday. In addition, The Dan Patrick Show features an interview with Costas, E! News takes a behind-the-scenes look at the Belmont with Josh Elliott, and Access Hollywood provides a special Belmont feature. The race itself will be carried at 4:30p on NBC, followed the Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.
ESPN’s coverage of the 2014 Eastern Conference Finals now ranks as the second most-watched Conference Finals ever on ESPN, according to Nielsen. The six-game series averaged 7,234,000 viewers, for a 48% spike from the network’s coverage of the Conference Finals last year. The series also nabbed a 4.5 household rating, up 45% over last year’s corresponding series. On the digital front, the Eastern Conference Finals saw triple-digit growth on WatchESPN with a rise of 246% over last year.
With more Nielsen numbers in, the Game 7 overtime contest between the Kings and Blackhawks on Sunday night averaged 4.137 million viewers for NBCSN. That marks a trio of notables for NBC Sports: the most-watched non-Stanley Cup Final NHL Playoff game on record; the most-watched NHL game ever on NBCSN; and the most-watched non-Olympic program ever on NBCSN. Digitally, the live stream delivered 142,033 uniques and 8,146,724 million minutes consumed, making it the best authentication-required NHL game ever in all key metrics and the best authenticated or unauthenticated game of the 2013-14 season in all key metrics. Through three rounds, the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs are the most-watched in 17 years.
Univision’s spotlight on the international friendly between Mexico/Ecuador on May 31 delivered an average of 2.3 million Total Viewers and 1.3 million Adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. The match also delivered digital tune-in with Univision Digital’s World Cup section setting a new World Cup 2014 launch-to-date record for both daily page views (3.3 million) and daily video views (381k).
The World Series of Fighting continues to make international inroads, nabbing new distribution deals in Asia and Europe, courtesy of IMG Media. In Asia, IMG has secured broadcast coverage across South East Asia on KIX, with action being broadcast in over 15 territories including Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand for 2014 and 2015. In Europe, the MMA promotion will be carried via Sport TV for the all fights sports channel, Kombat Sport, to show WSOF events in French-speaking Europe as well as some African territories.
Canada’s Rogers announced its NHL talent lineup beginning with the 2014/15 season. The company stated that Jim Hughson, Dave Randorf, Paul Romanuk and Bob Cole will call play-by-play for NHL national games across all Rogers properties, as well as Hockey Night in Canada, this coming fall.
After Sunday’s crushing take as The Mountain on Game of Thrones, Hafthor Julius Bjornsson makes his return to the World’s Strongest Man competition on CBS Sports Network with ten 30-minute episodes on deck, as well as a 90-minute finale crowning the 2014 World’s Strongest Man. Programming begins tonight at 9p and airs weekly through the finale on Wednesday, Aug. 13. Brent Stover calls the action from Los Angeles, Calif., along with Aaron Taylor and three-time World’s Strongest Man Bill Kazmaier.

Tomorrow will see ESPN, ESPN3 and ABC launch 27.5 hours of live HD coverage of X Games Austin, with ESPN and ABC showcasing 20 hours of coverage, while an additional 7.5 hours will be exclusive to ESPN3. Additionally, ESPN will deliver four hours of anthology programming on June 15 featuring the best content from X Games Austin. Outside the United States, X Games will be seen in more than 200 countries and territories to more than 285 million homes, including telecasts in Africa, Asia, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Caribbean, Europe, Israel, Mexico, Middle East, New Zealand and South America.
Tennis Channel is teaming with AccuWeather, ClearVision Airport Network and Le Pain Quotidien for a series of content partnerships during the network’s French Open coverage, which run through June 8. The deal with AccuWeather will give Tennis Channel viewers a preview on what conditions the players will deal with during the tournament, offering videos with graphics and articles that provide insider analysis. ClearVision Airport Network will deliver French Open fans the chance to catch up on the day’s highlights while waiting in an airport terminal via customized Court Reports. Meanwhile, the partnership with Le Pain Quotidien will see the development of co-branded recipe cards for Le Pain Quotidien customers.
WestwoodOne named its slate of college football matchups for the season, with action beginning Thursday, August 28 with Texas A&M/South Carolina. WestwoodOne will carry one NCAA Football game each week, with some weeks also seeing a second game in the lineup. The schedule features games with preseason top-10 teams Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Oregon, Michigan State and Stanford. Postseason games this year include the SEC Championship Game, the annual Army vs. Navy Game and the FCS Championship Game.
TVG offers its own on-site television coverage on California Chrome’s quest for the Triple Crown from New York’s Belmont Park this week, with coverage spanning Wednesday through Saturday. Todd Schrupp, Simon Bray and Paul Lo Duca will be on hand to provide breaking news for the Grade 1 $1.5M Belmont Stakes, report on all the undercard action and offer their expert analysis. Coverage kicks off today at 10a with a live broadcast of the Belmont Stakes post-position draw. The Association of Volleyball Professionals and smart USA announced a sponsorship agreement for the AVP Tour’s 2014 season that will designate smart as the Official Automotive Partner of the AVP for all seven of its tournaments this season, and smart will receive title sponsorship of two of the AVP’s marquee Southern California events. Broadway’s Rock of Ages is hosting a two-week power play in celebration of the New York Rangers playing in the Stanley Cup Final. The breakaway begins on Tuesday, June 3, when MSG Network hockey analyst Ron Duguay hits the boards and rocks out with the cast in a one-timer cameo in the musical. In addition, there will be a special curtain-call dance party dedicated to the red and blue.
Meanwhile, the Rangers will host a free outdoor Viewing Party presented by Chase and Fan Fest presented by Coca-Cola Zero at Bryant Park today for Blueshirt fans. Fans that come out can participate in hockey themed contests on a 32′ X 64′ synthetic ice hockey rink to win Rangers prizes. In addition, the event will offer Fan photo stations, face painters, giveaways and Rangers alumni appearances.
Speaking of fan fasts, the 2014 UFC Fan Expo announced that Axxess Pharma Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical and nutritional supplements company, will participate at the 2014 UFC Fan Expo during Fourth of July weekend in Las Vega. The company will be marketing their TapouT Muscle Recovery product. The event will allow fans to meet their favorite fighters, attend seminars, and check out the latest product.

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) are launching the NACDA Football Bowl Subdivision Leadership Summit presented by Learfield Sports, which will take place January 11-12, 2015 in Dallas in conjunction with the College Football Playoff National Championship Game on January 12, 2015 at The George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum.
Sporting News Media released its fourth annual survey into US sports media consumption, the US Know the Fan Report 2014, produced in conjunction with Kantar Media and SportBusiness Group. The study found that nearly half of sports fans claim to use an Internet connected device at the same time as watching sports on TV. Often, the use of second-screen allows fans catch up on what’s happening with other games being played via live text commentary and live scores (44%), access non-sports related content (38%), communicate with friends via a second screen device about the sports event on TV (21%), watch clips and highlights of other games being played (20%) and post comments to social networking platforms about the game/event they’re watching (14%). Facebook (70%), YouTube (40%) and Twitter (24%) remain the most popular networks overall for fans to follow sports, however fans are using them less as compared to last year to make use of newer social networking platforms such as Google+ (16%), Instagram (10%), Pinterest (8%) and Vine (6%).
NBA Digital announced plans for the 2014 NBA Finals including live original programming on NBA TV as well as the latest news, video highlights and social integration via NBA.com, NBA Mobile and the NBA Game Time app. NBA TV’s live on-site coverage from San Antonio and Miami will feature analysts including Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Grant Hill, Isiah Thomas, Steve Smith, Rick Fox, Dennis Scott and Brent Barry. Pre- and post-game coverage will be hosted by Matt Winer. NBA.com’s coverage will include access to live streaming press conferences, game breakdowns, video highlights, stats and game stories from the site’s roster of reporters.
Ahead the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Disney & ESPN Media Networks and Google are making the WatchESPN app compatible with Chromecast through Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Customers who receive ESPN linear networks as part of their video subscription must download an update to the WatchESPN app in the Google Play and App Store to cast live access to ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPNEWS and ESPN Deportes onto Chromecast.
Yahoo Sports’ World Football Pick’em is now open ahead of the World Cup, offering two phases to the online game. Weeks 1-2 will serve as a predictor game, allowing users to predict scores for every game in each group. Weeks 3-4 will then allow users to plot the route to the finals for all teams, including who they think will take home the trophy.

American Basketball Association CEO Joe Newman announced his retirement from the league effective July 1st. Ron Tilley, the current ABA President, will assume the role as ABA CEO. "In Ron Tilley, we have a man of great integrity, an excellent vision of the future, a strong business background and many years as a professional coach and player – all solid credentials to make the ABA even bigger, better and bolder than it is," said Newman.
DIRECTV named Jason Brum as Director of National Sports Sales for the company where he will be responsible for sports sales strategy and revenue generation for all DIRECTV sports assets, including the NFL Sunday Ticket. He was most recently responsible for Strategic Partnerships at NBC Sports Group.
