IN THE NEWS

Sell-side advertising platform Magnite and GroupM announced initial results for GroupM’s Premium Marketplace. GroupM consolidated its programmatic media buying across omnichannel environments including CTV, digital video, and display within Magnite in the US and Canada, with the goal of enabling clients to achieve greater value, transparency and insights into their buys. And? “We have seen a noticeable increase in win rates through Magnite when compared to the same inventory in other supply paths,” said Esra Bacher, Managing Partner, Programmatic Investment Lead at GroupM. “This allows us to better scale across our campaigns. With the additional insights we’ve been able to gain within the Premium Marketplace, we’re now able to more clearly understand where and how bids are competing, and better prioritize our demand.”

A judge refused to dismiss Dominion Voting System’s defamation case against Fox Corp., parent company of Fox News, over reports on vote-rigging in the 2020 election. On Tuesday, the Delaware judge said the voting machine company’s allegations “support a reasonable inference that Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch either knew Dominion had not manipulated the election or at least recklessly disregarded the truth when they allegedly caused Fox News to propagate its claims about Dominion.”

Another judge ruled against right-wing network OAN, allowing a lawsuit by voting tech company Smartmatic to proceed. OAN had argued that the court of US District Judge Carl Nichols didn’t have jurisdiction.

Documentary filmmaker Alex Holder has complied with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the Capitol asking for footage of Donald Trump and staff members filmed for three-part documentary “Unprecedented.” “As a British filmmaker, I had no agenda coming into this,” wrote Holder on Twitter. “We simply wanted to better understand who the Trumps were and what motivated them to hold onto power so desperately. We have dutifully handed over all the materials the Committee has asked for and we are fully cooperating.”

Spanish-language Discovery Familia is ready for a new on-air look and feel and Verano WOW summer programming slate. “Through the years, Discovery Familia has presented the relatable, incredible and purely fun stories that bring the buzz – and Verano WOW will be no exception, full of exciting personalities and new episodes of beloved shows,” said Eileen Piñeiro, Senior Channel Director, Warner Bros. Discovery US Hispanic Division. “Verano WOW will also introduce a new brand identity for Discovery Familia – a bright, upbeat, and energetic vibe that reflects the network’s current personality and programming.”

There may be jitters about how the economy will affect the media business, but NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, speaking at Cannes Lions, suggested his company is well-prepared to weather the storm. “We’re the biggest scale in the business, we have the largest cash flow and the lowest debt,” he said. “It’s all evolving as we expected.” As far as a possible ad sales partnership with Netflix, Shell was mum — mostly. “I’m not going to comment on any conversations we may be having or have had,” he said, but added, “I’m not surprised that some of our SVOD partners are getting into the ad business — that’s where the money is.”

TECH TALK

FreeWheel is launching new identity collaborations and capabilities that will enable advertisers to seamlessly connect first and third-party data to IDs coming from diverse platforms and endpoints. By connecting premium data services and platforms, including Blockgraph, Experian, LiveRamp and TransUnion, FreeWheel’s capabilities allow advertisers and publishers to defragment the industry and match their first-party IDs to some of today’s most commonly-used IDs in the TV advertising ecosystem. “Identity matters because it’s how advertising delivers on its digital promise: personalization at scale, providing a consistent, audience-based view across devices, datasets and inventory sources,” Matt Spiegel, EVP, Media & Entertainment Vertical, TransUnion, tells Cynopsis. “Being a part of FreeWheel’s identity initiative enables TransUnion to help advertisers and media companies address fragmentation, achieve greater scale and marry first- and third-party data to better understand consumer’s viewing experiences as the streaming population and time spent streaming grows.”

Meta announced a settlement with the US Department of Housing and Urban Development that will change the way it delivers housing ads. “Specifically, we are building into our ads system a method — referred to in the settlement as the ‘variance reduction system’ — designed to make sure the audience that ends up seeing a housing ad more closely reflects the eligible targeted audience for that ad,” said Roy L. Austin Jr, Vice President of Civil Rights and Deputy General Counsel, in a blog post. To protect against discrimination, machine learning technology will work to ensure the age, gender and estimated race or ethnicity of a housing ad’s overall audience matches the age, gender, and estimated race or ethnicity mix of the population eligible to see that ad. Meta will also employ the method for employment and credit ads.

Digital video ad spend is expected to reach nearly $50 billion in 2022, but where is that money being spent? According to a MediaRadar analysis based on a sampling of online video advertising from traditional websites and YouTube, online video ad spend increased 30% quarter-over-quarter from 4Q21 to 1Q22, and video spend that was solely YouTube increased 57%. However, video spend without YouTube was down 56% QoQ to $63 million. Advertisers spending with YouTube and other online video increased 31%.

GOING GLOBAL

Paramount+ is now available to audiences in the UK and Ireland through a partnership with Sky, and will also launch on Sky platforms in Italy, Germany and Austria in 2022 as part of a new multi-year distribution agreement. The streaming service will also debut in Switzerland this year and India in 2023. “This is a phenomenal year of growth for Paramount+”, said Tom Ryan, President & CEO, Streaming at Paramount. “By the end of the year, we expect to be live in 45 countries.”

GoQuest Media has signed a deal with Australian broadcaster SBS for “Traitor,” produced by Elisa Estonia and Estonian public broadcaster ERR.

Cineflix Rights has closed multiple international deals with Central and Eastern European and Southern Mediterranean broadcasters. Among them are with Tanweer for “Marcella” for ERT (Greece); Disney+ has taken Season 1 of “Coroner” for its streaming platforms covering the Balkans and Bulgaria. True crime titles include “John Wayne Gacy: Killer Clown’s Revenge” acquired by TV JOJ (Czech Republic); “Battle of Alcatraz” to AMCNI for Spektrum channel (Central Europe) and FTV Prima (Czech Republic); and “Killer Cases” to AETN (Poland).

London-based Media I.M. Incorporated announced that “Sunny Bunnies Sing-Along,” a new spin-off from the “Sunny Bunnies” pre-school series, will go into production this month, with the first episode due to be released in August.
