PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
Youth Tencent
, part of the social media and games division of Chinese tech and media giant Tencent, has been rolling out a new online movie production initiative. One notable bit of news: Fox International Productions – an offshoot of Twentieth Century Fox – is taking part in the project, along with Sina Entertainment and iQIYI. Called the Flying Wings (aka Bi Yi) slate, the project is made up of ten films, 7 of which have already wrapped production. The films, geared toward younger viewers, are all helmed by young filmmakers (average age: 30). All ten movies are slated to be broadcast exclusively on the iQIYI video streaming platform in the second half of this year.
PARTNERSHIPS + DEALS
Snap Inc.
owns more than just Snapchat. As first reported by BuzzFeed, the company has acquired Ctrl Me, a drone startup based in Venice, California. BuzzFeed reports that Snap paid less than $1 million for the company, hiring CEO Simon Nielsen and snatching up the company’s assets and equipment. According to Variety, the acquisition actually took place in late 2016. The trade pub notes that the company wasn’t actually building its own drones; rather, it resold other company’s drones, custom-rigging them to carry high-end cameras.
PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
AccuWeather
is expanding its digital footprint. The weather forecaster has launched a new app for Android TV, Google’s online services and video platform for smart TV and TV-connected devices. The app features a variety of weather videos and forecasting features. AccuWeather had already offered apps for Android phones and tablets.
SOCIAL MEDIA
Facebook
just changed its commercial policy, prohibiting the sale of devices that facilitate piracy. The change was first reported by The Drum. The new policy appears to be primarily aimed at Kodi-based devices that use software allowing unlimited access to piracy-streaming services. Kodi – a free, open-source media player software application – has become particularly popular with pirates, who have taken to modifying the software’s code to allow illegal streaming. It appears that some Kodi-enabled devices are still listed under Facebook’s Marketplace section; in other words, the ban hasn’t been fully enforced just yet. Facebook
confirmed
the policy change, and also said that it’s updated its advertising policy to ban ads for illegal devices and streaming services.
RESEARCH
Traditional TV is still dominating total TV share of screen, according to Nielsen’s fourth quarter comparable metrics report. But a not-insignificant portion of that viewership came through digital devices. According to Nielsen, the total TV share of gross minutes viewed in Q4 was 92.4%. 82.1% of that came from traditional viewing, while 10.3% came via connected TV devices like Apple TV, Roku, gaming consoles and connected DVD players. Nielsen said that adult TV viewers watch TV for an average of 5.6 of 7 days per week. For connected TV, it’s 4.1 out of 7 days.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Another one bites the dust. Tidal, the music subscription service founded by rapper Jay-Z, has lost its third CEO in the past three years. Jeff Toig, who became CEO eighteen months ago, has left the company, Tidal confirmed. The company says that it will announce a new CEO “in the coming weeks.” Billboard was the first to break the news, noting that Toig actually left the company in March.
