NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Vimeo signed up for its first original programming yesterday. The series, High Maintenance, is from creators Katja Blichfeld (30 Rock) and Ben Sinclair (Law & Order: SVU), and follows a drug dealer delivering his product to clients. Six episodes will launch later this year exclusively on the Vimeo On Demand pay subscription service, but the first 13 eps are now available, for free. "This is the second phase of the initial $10 million investment announced earlier this year to license and distribute high-quality content on Vimeo On Demand," General Manager Audience Networks Greg Clayman told Cynopsis. "High Maintenance is a natural fit for our first series, given that it grew organically on Vimeo and found its audience there."

Recently cancelled Community may live another season, thanks to Hulu. Vulture reports that the streaming service is having discussions with Sony Pictures Television to produce another 13-eps. Community was Hulu’s top show in January and one of the top ten series on the site based on page visits, according to SimilarWeb.

Netflix will release new seasons of DreamWorks Dragons starting spring 2015 through its deal with DreamWorks Animation. The animated series is based on the How to Train Your Dragon films, and previously aired on Cartoon Network. DreamWorks and Netflix stuck a deal last summer to become the exclusive home for new programming from the studio, and will premiere three new original series: King Julien, Puss in Boots and Veggie Tales in the House in late 2014.

Newsmax TV signed a distribution deal with DirecTV to unveil an OTT and TV Everywhere platform in mid-June. "Newsmax was born online, and as the lines between TV and the web blur, we’ll attract a growing audience that doesn’t differentiate between the two," Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy said.

Travel and lifestyle brand PTA Networks announced a new multi-platform digital network called PlanesTrains+Automobiles (PTA) yesterday. The network is launching six new original series: included are adventure show StateXState, Day Off featuring photographer Noah Abrams and Staycation, a show that turns locals into tourists in their own community. PTA is available on Roku devices, at www.thePTA.com and Clear TV.

As previously reported, Apple confirmed that it bought Beats by Dre headphones tech and music streaming service for a whopping $3 billion. Founders behind the music company, rapper Dr. Dre and producer Jimmy Lovine, will join Apple in undetermined roles for now.

It took less than a day for LeVar Burton to reach his Kickstarter goal of $1 million to revive children’s educational show Reading Rainbow for the web. The Roots star had hosted and exec produced the show during its 1983-2006 TV run. "Grateful," tweeted Burton on Wednesday night.

Dish Network announced it will start accepting Internet currency Bitcoin as payment starting in the third quarter. Online retailers including Overstock.com have allowed bitcoin, but Dish claims it’s the biggest company yet to accept the virtual currency.

PBS‘ third annual Online Film Festival will showcase 25 films from June 16 to July 31. The first two years of the festival attracted a million video streams and more than 50,000 votes to decide what film would receive the "People’s Choice" award. The films will be available to stream across PBS digital platforms.

Ford and What’s Trending are hosting a live stream event at YouTube Space LA to unveil the winner of their "Escape to Bonnaroo" (#Escape2roo) online contest; the top five artists compete for the chance to perform onstage at the Tennessee music festival. AD PLATFORMS

FreeWheel and Adap.tv are integrating their programmatic technology to serve advertisers an "upfront-like" purchase system for premium digital content from publishers. Adap.tv will use FreeWheel’s FourFronts marketplace to begin testing a pilot program for clients; they’re anticipating Optimedia, Magna Global and Starcom MediaVest Group to participate. "The goal of this pilot program is to extend the commitment to simplify and streamline the buying and selling processes of digital advertising by bringing key stakeholders together to test, learn and move the industry toward the inevitable multi-channel, data-driven world of TV," Adap.tv’s Chief Product Officer and co-founder Teg Grenager said.

In a new report, Nielsen says the effectiveness of integrated campaigns across multiple screens to maximize results has been "mixed." An analysis by the measurement company’s Cross-Platform Campaign Ratings of 45 campaigns found the vast majority "did not achieve better results than if the TV and online advertising had been planned separately." With research indicating marketers can generate an 8 percent greater reach without spending more money, Nielsen labels the efforts analyzed "a real missed opportunity."

AdColony hired four new executives: Megan Sullivan as Vice President of Client Relations, Sally Medina as Director of Sales, David Pokress as Senior Vice President of Monetization and Publisher Relations and Brian Mulcahy as Director of Brand Sales. Sullivan was previously with Apple iAd, Medina was with Pandora, Pokress with gigaGame Partner llc and Beatport, Mulcahy was with Martini Media.

Major League Gaming (MLG) appointed Jared Gerritzen as Vice President of Publisher & Developer Relations. He most recently headed development for Zombie StudiosBlacklight Series.

Ari Levy was named Senior Technology Reporter for CNBC. Most recently, Levy was the Technology Editor at Bloomberg News.
