The Television Critics Association announced nominees for its 2014 TCA Awards. Breaking Bad will defend its Program of the Year crown against Game of Thrones, Orange Is the New Black, True Detective and The Good Wife. CBS has the most nods, 9, followed by HBO (8), FX (7) and Fox (6). Winners will be announced Saturday, July 19 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. For a complete list of nominees, go here

IN THE NEWS

2013 was a very good year for media CEOs, according to the AP and executive pay research firm Equilar. Taking up six of the top 10 spots on the highest-paid exec list: CBS‘s Les Moonves (second with $65.9 million), Viacom‘s Philippe Dauman (fifth with $37.2 million), Walt Disney‘s Bob Iger (seventh with $34.3 million), Discovery Comm.‘s David Zaslav (eight with $33.3 million), Time Warner’s Jeff Bewkes (ninth with $32.5 million) and Comcast‘s Brian Roberts (tenth with $31.4 million).

Fusion is taking soccer seriously. To capitalize on World Cup mania, the net is turning weekly program The Soccer Gods into a daily primetime show, The Soccer Gods: Brazil 2014, preempting regular 10p programming during the June 12-July 13 global sports event. A mobile-responsive microsite will create and curate content that includes reactions from inside the stadiums, giving users access to live match blogs, the latest stats and celeb videos.

Destination America announced the winners of its second annual "Red, White and You" contest, which awards deserving communities with a Fourth of July celebration. Hamtramck MI, a city hit by hard times and Prescott AZ, recovering from devastating wildfires, will be treated to "over-the-top" Independence Day parties.

CMT is exclusively streaming eight tracks from Miranda Lambert‘s upcoming album, "Platinum," promoted across all of its digital platforms, including CMT.com, CMT Pure, CMT Artists App, CMT HOT 20 COUNTDOWN and CMT Radio Networks. Platforms on sister nets MTV and VH1 will also promote the album stream. "Platinum" hits shelves Tuesday, June 3.

ABC Family‘s new series, Chasing Life, is available for preview on the WATCH ABC app through Monday, June 9, and can be accessed on demand starting Tuesday, June 3. The drama, based on Mexican telenovela Terminales, officially premieres Tuesday, June 10 at 9p.

The Television Academy is celebrating seven programs "that have used the power of television to generate awareness and create positive change regarding today’s important social issues." Honorees at a Sunday, June 1 event at the SLS Beverly Hills are Showtime‘s The Big C: hereafter and Comedy Warriors: Healing Through Humor, ABC Family‘s The Fosters ("Pilot"), HBO‘s Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God, CBS‘s Mom ("Zombies and Cobb Salad"), Conde Nast Entertainment/GLAMOUR‘s Screw You Cancer, and HBO‘s Vice. Dana Delany (Body of Proof) hosts for the sixth consecutive year.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

UK’s Pioneer Productions will produce Monsters Behind the Iron Curtain (wt) for National Geographic Channels International and Animal Planet. The two-hour special explores myths and legends in the former eastern bloc.

Killer Films and Glass Elevator Media merged to form Killer Content. Glass Elevator founder and CEO Adrienne Becker will serve as CEO of the new company, with Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler as co-presidents.

HBO Europe will produce dark humor drama Umbre (Small Town Gangster) in Romania, the third HBO Europe series produced in the country.

High Noon Entertainment is partnering with Swedish mobile game developer MAG Interactive to adapt its Ruzzle series of mobile games for the U.S. broadcast, cable and syndication markets. Ruzzle has over 50 million downloads worldwide.

Paramount Television and Anonymous Content LLP announced a three-year, first-look production deal. Paramount will have rights to produce and distribute scripted television programming developed by Anonymous for broadcast, premium cable, cable and online audiences. The first collaboration in development will be a drama series inspired by the best-selling novel, The Alienist.

HGTV picked up 13 more eps of husband-and-wife home remodeling show Fixer Upper. On May 22 at 11p, the series delivered a best-ever .58 rating among P25-54.

HBO bought gay rights drama Open City (wt) from Dave Kajganich (True Story) and Adam Shankman (Hairspray), who will exec produce with Shankman’s Offspring Entertainment partner Jennifer Gibgot.

 

COMING UP

A slew of stars were named as presenters on the 68th Annual Tony Awards. Among the A-listers are Bradley Cooper, Clint Eastwood, Kevin Bacon, Tony Goldwyn, Kenneth Branagh and Will Ferrell. Ceremony airs Sunday, June 8 at 8p on CBS.

Season two of HBO‘s True Detective will center on three leads and be set in California, creator Nick Pizzolatto revealed in a public radio podcast. "The characters are all new, but I’m deeply in love with them," Pizzolatto said on To the Best of Our Knowledge. "We’ll probably start casting in the coming months."

Marlon Wayans will host the MTV Africa Music Awards, back after a three-year break. The show will air live globally from Durban, South Africa on Saturday, June 7.

Frequent Maury guest and "family fixer" Dave Vitalli sets kids and parents on a better path in upcoming CMT series My Dysfunctional Family. Shed Media US production launches Saturday, July 5 at 10p.

Best-selling author Nicholas Sparks makes his TV debut as exec producer with Lifetime revenge drama Deliverance Creek, premiering Saturday, September 13 at 9p.

WWE starts exclusive coverage of NXT Takeover tonight, with a preview show at 10p. A live, 30-minute pre-show airs Thursday, May 29 at 7:30p followed by the live two-hour special at 8p.

UP original movie Love Finds You in Sugarcreek premieres Sunday, June 1 at 7p. The romance/suspense drama starring Tom Everett Scott (Southland), Sarah Lancaster (Chuck) and Kelly McGillis (Top Gun), from Mission Pictures, is set in an Amish community rocked by an unsolved murder.

AXS TV‘s summer programming includes a Sunday night concert series, starting with Peter Gabriel: Live in Verona – Taking the Pulse on June 1 at 8p. Also on the way: the series debut of MOCKpocalypse on the net’s Thursday night comedy block, June 12 at 8:30p, joining the third season premiere of Tom Green Live at 9p and the return of Gotham Comedy Live at 10p.

Two-hour movie Miracle Landing on the Hudson, the story of the emergency water landing of US Airways Flight 1549 told from the perspective of the passengers, debuts Sunday, June 22 at 9p on Nat Geo.

Season two of Great American Country‘s Junk Gypsies premieres Thursday, June 12 at 9p. The series about women converting trash into treasure has been GAC’s number one weekend program among adults and women 24-54.

Whoopi Goldberg joins Oprah’s Master Class on OWN Sunday, June 1 at 10p. Among The View host’s revelations about her unorthodox appearance: "Glamour’s a lot of work. I’m fundamentally lazy. You know, I have dreads because I didn’t want to comb my hair."

The youngest living Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer, shares his story on the season finale of Sportsman Channel‘s Amazing America with Sarah Palin on Thursday, May 29 at 8p.

 

SUMMER STUNTS

Syfy launches its first-ever "Sharknado Week" Saturday, July 26, ahead of the premiere of Sharknado 2: The Second One on Wednesday, July 30 at 9p. Highlights include Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark on Saturday at 9p; Sharkmania: The Top 15 Biggest Baddest Bloodiest Bites on Sunday at 9p and Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda on Sunday at 9p. (Discovery‘s long-running "Shark Week" starts Sunday, August 10.)

In honor of gay pride month, Showtime is bringing back Queer as Folk (2000-2005) and The L Word (2004-2009) in June. All seasons will air on Showtime Showcase from June through November, with back-to-back eps of both series running Monday through Friday June 2- June 30. From July 3 through November 13, back-to-back eps will air every Thursday night.

Live! With Kelly & Michael gets its biggest guest yet when President Obama sits down with morning show hosts Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan on Friday, May 30, in the White House Blue Room.

MillerCoors just debuted a TV spot aimed squarely at dads and sons, just in time for Father’s Day. "This is a really important holiday and it’s a great occasion after a really brutal winter to get out and spend some quality time with dad," company spokesperson Karina Diehl told AdAge. The ad, promoted with the hashtags #HeresToDad and #GraciasPapa, will run in English and Spanish.

RATINGS

Memorial Day wasn’t kind to reality shows. In its regular Monday-at-8p time slot, the latest incarnation of ABC‘s The Bachelorette hit a series low 1.4 among A18-49, according to preliminary Nielsens. Fox‘s MasterChef matched The Bachelorette in the A18-49 demo, down 33 percent from its Wednesday premiere.

It was a different matter with Monday’s more content-appropriate The World Wars on History. The six-hour event series premiered with 3.4 million total viewers, 1.4 million A25-54 and 1.3 million A18-49, according to Nielsen. Series concludes tonight at 9p.

More holiday weekend blahs: AMC‘s Mad Men ended the first half of its final season on Sunday to 1.9 million total viewers, versus 2.7 million for the season six finale. Among A18-49, the midseason finale scored 854,000 among A18-49.

Monday’s premiere of Lifetime movie Petals on the Wind, sequel to Flowers in the Attic, delivered 3.4 million total viewers, according to Nielsen, averaging 1.5 million among A18-49, 1.5 million among A25-54, 1.3 million among W25-54 and 1.2 million among W18-49.

HBO‘s The Normal Heart delivered 1.4 million total viewers across two airings Sunday night, with just under 1 million at 9p, and 434,000 at 11:15p.
