Yesterday, Facebook became a major competitor for music discovery app, Shazam. Facebook’s app can now recognize music and TV shows playing near a user, and will automatically provide what tune may be in the background when a user creates a post. "We want to help people tell better stories," Facebook’s Product Manager Arteh Selekman told the Wall Street Journal. "I hope there are people who love the feature and post more." The social site also announced deals with Spotify and Rdio, which will allow its 1.28 billion users to preview songs others shared.

Netflix will soon be available in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Luxembourg. The streaming service did not say when in 2014 it will launch, but the new additions put it in a total of 50 markets. The streaming service announced foreign revenue in 2013 of $712 million, and $2.8 billion in the U.S.
The Globetrotters now exclusively play in multi-channel network The Whistle‘s court. The sports network will oversee the Globetrotter’s YouTube content (84,000 subs), and help create new programming for its more than four million subs. The Whistle recently closed a $10 million investment from former MLB president Bob DuPuy, former Nickelodeon president Gerry Laybourne and Clear Channel‘s Bob Pittman.
The American Heroes Channel launched the first Stump the Expert ep on its Facebook page.The show will give fans of the network a chance to ask tough questions to a weekly featured expert. The first ep is hosted by filmmakers of Chosin the Movie (to premiere on AHC on Memorial Day).
From a deal previously reported, Amazon added its first HBO content to Prime Instant Video yesterday. All seasons of The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Six Feet under, Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Flight of the Conchords are now available to stream through the $99/year service. Select seasons of True Blood, Boardwalk Empire and more also hit Prime Instant Video. Shows like Girls and Veep won’t arrive for a few more years.
Pinterest will introduce a new trend insights API platform to inform businesses which images and pins drive sales. TechCrunch reports select marketing companies are testing out the platform, including Salesforce, Hootsuite, Spreadfast, Percolate, Curalate and Tailwind. Previously, companies had to use third-party marketing tools to assess the success of pins. Pinterest recently raised $200 million to bring its value to an estimated $5 billion. Earlier this month, the site also debuted Promoted Pins.

AD PLATFORMS
Mobile video ad platform Vdopia is integrating BlueKai‘s data to give advertisers access to 330 million unique mobile users, and improve targeting abilities. "In 2013, advertisers increased spending on mobile video advertising by 167 percent," BlueKai Vice President of Mobile Jeff Frantz said. "With such a large investment in mobile video, advertisers must deploy the most advanced campaign targeting tools to maximize ROI."
Instagram recently showcased the success of its partnered brand’s native ads, Pinterest launched Promoted Pins and Yahoo rolled out mobile-first native ads. So, is native advertising here to stay? Jivox‘s CEO and founder Diaz Nesamoney recently told Cynopsis it is definitely more than a passing fad. The data-driven ad platform provider just announced six new rich media native ad formats, and expects native advertising to only further grow into a substantial proportion of digital advertising.
Why is Jivox pushing native advertising now?
Historically these types of ads started out on social media and in sponsored stories; they tended to be simplistic, and what we are seeing now is a broader adoption of native ad formats from mainstream publishers. We thought it was a great idea to bring a better rich media format to the native advertising canvas for sites that have more flexibility of ad formats.
Still, there are many problems with the native structure, why do you think only 24 percent scroll down a native advertising page at all (according to Adweek)?
Consumers wouldn’t engage in something unless there is value for them. The simplistic format didn’t provide them a lot, and when they clicked on it, it took them to sponsored content elsewhere. It ultimately took them out of context. They understand the proposition of sponsored content by a brand, but creative content can get them to engage and view the brand in a positive light. The other problem is there has been too much effort to try to make the ad blend in with the content. Users want to know when something is sponsored or actual content from the publications. If you’re getting tips from a brand, you want to know that.
What are your thoughts on the success of Instagram’s native ads, and Pinterest pushing the format?
Native advertising grew out of these types of new media, which makes perfect sense because they don’t support the classic banner ad. Also, social media sites see users coming from mobile devices, and on mobile devices there just is not enough real estate for banner ads. However, this doesn’t work for all media companies, and in general you have to be careful how much native advertising you choose to include.

The site’s visitors are prompted to enter their zip code, and they will receive one of Gigi’s 35 video forecasts ranging from 30 seconds to two minutes. However, the videos are not for the fainthearted, as she complains about Mark Zuckerberg to complaining about her son’s girlfriend. He explains in a "special message" where the idea of Gigi came from part his own grandmother and part everyone’s grandma – and the four-hour process of getting into character.
