AT THE NEWFRONTS

At Time Inc.’s NewFront at the Hudson Theater Senior Vice President of Video J.R. McCabe noted that Time’s entities have a total of 30.8 million Twitter followers, 34.3 million Facebook fans and 21.2 million followers combined on Google+, Pinterest and Instagram. Some of the company’s slate of new programming and products are:

  • The upcoming spring premiere of PEOPLE Now, a live daily talk show on PEOPLE.com devoted to the latest celebrity and entertainment news, and Eyesore, with Rachel Dratch & Alec Holland, where the former SNL star and her collaborator will literally de-clutter peoples’ lives.
  • Times Red Border Films documentary series will debut six new chapters this year, including the third season of SI Underdogs (due out in the fall), celebrity series Entertainment Weekly Lightbulb and a women-focused roundtable discussion about style and celebrities called The Climb.
  • New distribution network partners are DailyMotion, Ulive, and Roku. Programming from People, Time, Cooking Light and Golf will be accessible on Net2TV through the Portico programming guide, available on 20 million screens.
  • Video projects 120 Sports and The Daily Cut are launching this year: 120 Sports is a "snackable" live streaming platform with content from partners like MLB Advanced Media, the NHL, Silver Chalice and Campus Insiders. The Daily Cut aggregates video from across Time’s portfolio, which viewers can browse by categories.

Fresh from its announcement of signing on with Google Preferred, DigitasLBi presented its NewFront yesterday at the Skylight Modern. The theme of the afternoon was "fearlessness" (see Digital Spotlight below) and how to lead a brand to greatness. Plenty of people were on hand to support the message, including LinkedIn‘s Dan Roth, Puma‘s Remi Carlioz, Upworthy‘s Eli Pariser, and more. The agency’s major announcements were:

  • A "BuzzFeed-in-residence program" in which members of the BF brand team will collaborate on-site with DigitasLBi to create brand strategies and content.
  • A 24-month first-look arrangement with Epic Digital on their stories of the amazing and the extraordinary. Epic currently has material in development with HBO, Fox Studio, and Warner Bros.
  • The NewFront Brand Content Index, a tool to standardize success measurements, co-developed by DigitasLBi and SimpleReach to provide a real-time and historical view of how any piece of content performs against both industry-specific and overall content benchmarks (page views, shares, time spent, Uniques, and more).
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

YouTube‘s top dance network DanceOn announced new shows from So You Think You Can Dance executive producer Nigel Lythgoe. Dance School Diaries will premiere in June as a docu-series following four teens and their families who participate in the prestigious ballet competition Youth America Grand Prix. Every Single Step (also out in June) is a reality competition series pitting choreographers against each other to win the title of "Choreographer of the Year."

Showtime made a deal with Cox Communications to launch its web-video service Showtime Anytime to its subscribers. Showtime Anytime is currently available to subs of Comcast, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications and more, and provides current and past seasons to the network’s original series like Masters of Sex and Homeland.

Bike builders on a $15,000 budget compete to construct the motorcycle that will most impress America in Discovery‘s #BikerLive, premiering Monday, May 12 at 10p. It’s the first time the net will turn to Twitter to determine a winner.

Cynopsis Digital held our first roundtable event yesterday at the New York offices of Shareablee, to hear from four prominent VC’s who invest in the digital space. The conversation, moderated by Fortune‘s Andrew Nusca, was lively and quick. Top bites included this from Rick Heitzmann of FirstMark Capital: "Video on mobile is only in the third inning." Alex Iskold of Techstars on the NY scene: "The shift to more tech in in New York will be great for the [digital] community. Funding at a later stage [from VC’s in NY] is at an all-time high." Added former Gotham Ventures venture partner and Bloglovin’ CEO Joy Marcus, "We need more tech pros in NY."  Important to focus on, according to Valhalla‘s Kiran Hebbar? "The future of ads on a phone."

CONTENT MEDIA

In advance of SundanceTV‘s The Writers’ Room’s next episode featuring House of Cards, the network has partnered with Sh*t Rough Drafts to release imagined misguided early drafts written by creator Paul Laudiero. On May 2, the mock versions of key scenes from the Netflix series will be available on www.sundance.tv and at www.shtroughdrafts.com.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Fox Sports made its first update to Fox Sports Go for Apple devices with a new user-interface and a tune-in alert feature. The app debuted just fourth months ago, and was the first to live-stream the Super Bowl. Later this year, Fox Sports Go will stream the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the National League Division Series, National League Championship Series and the World Series.

WWE is now available on the Xbox One. With an Xbox Live Gold membership and a WWE subscription for $9.99 per month, viewers can watch 12 live events featured every month on the network.

Like Facebook, mobile photo messaging app SnapChat may want a bigger piece of the "messaging" trend with the newest feature it rolled out yesterday. SnapChat users can now use Chat to text or create live video conversations with friends. Similar to the photos that can be sent between users, the text and video conversations will also disappear after a short time.

EXEC MOVES

Marketing agency Fluent hired Adam Gillman as Vice President of Strategic Development and Jessica Grant as Director of Business Operations & Production Development. Gillman joins Fluent from GoLive! Mobile, where he was General Manager. Grant was most recently the Head of Operations & Client Services at Eclipse.io.

Ad Colony has named Andrew French as General Manager EMEA and Stefan Adamczyk as Sales Director EMEA of its European offices. Previously, French was VP of Client Services at Somo, and Adamczyk was formerly at Adloqi and Mobile Venture.

MediaMath opened a new office in Tokyo yesterday. Erich Wasserman was appointed Global Chief Revenue Officer.

Rubicon Project named Robert Frankenberg, Robert Spillane and Lisa Troe to its Board of Directors. Frankenberg was the former CEO of Novell, Inc, Spillane was the former CEO Donnelley Marketing, and Troe was the former branch chief of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Los Angeles.
