..CBS CEO Les Moonves didn’t mince words at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference yesterday when asked what he thought about streamer-of-broadcast signals Aereo. "Aereo takes our content and doesn’t pay for it," said Moonves. "That’s theft." But as the Supreme Court broadcasters versus Aereo case moves along, Moonves insisted he’s not worried. "It’s nothing we lose sleep over," he told attendees. "Aereo is not a problem. It’s been blown way out of proportion."
Prompted by a study that revealed, among other things, that two-thirds of white Millennials believe having an African-American President proves people of color have the same opportunities as whites, MTV is launching "Look Different," a multi-year campaign to help young people recognize and respond to hidden racial, gender and anti-LGBT bias. Elements include a documentary exploring Millennials’ views on race and what’s fair; a PSA series, and a seven day "Racial Bias Cleanse," designed to help people begin unlearning biases.
Project Greenlight is returning to HBO, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck once again exec producing the series about the search for a first-time director. Why a revival of the 2001-2003 competition? "Project Greenlight was ahead of its time," said Affleck. "Now that technology has caught up to the concept, we thought it was the perfect time to bring it back."
Uber pro-competition FCC chair Tom Wheeler got right to the elephant in the room, the open Internet controversy, Wednesday at the Cable Show. While he defended the Commission’s revised net neutrality rules, Wheeler warned those who believe the FCC "gutted" net neutrality to "put away the party hats." Noting, "Our goal is rules that will encourage broadband providers to continually upgrade service for all," Wheeler put cable operators on notice not to abuse the open Internet. "I must warn you, we will look skeptically upon special exceptions. If someone acts to divide the Internet between haves and have-nots, we will use every power at our disposal to stop it. And I consider that includes Title II." The Title II provision of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 would reclassify broadband as a telecom service, therefore subjecting it to stronger regulations.
With a full bench of promising series (Gotham, Empire), Fox canceled freshman futuristic drama Almost Human. After premiering to 9.2 million viewers and a 3.1 rating in the A18-49 demo, Human ended its run in March with a not-exactly-horrible 5.6 million viewers and a 1.5 rating. Some fans aren’t taking the cancelation lying down a petition on Change.org petitions Syfy to pick up the show.
It’s Judge Judy after dark. The doyenne of daytime is getting her own prime time special, CBS‘s one-hour Judge Judy Primetime, featuring a look back at the rise of Judy Sheindlin from family court judge to syndication staple. Produced by CBS Television Distribution and Queen Bee Productions, the show airs Tuesday, May 20 at 8p.

Bravo‘s headed to Beantown for the twelfth season of Top Chef. "Boston has always been at the top of our wish list as a location for Top Chef, not only because of its rich historical significance, but also because of its robust and ever-growing culinary scene," said Shari Levine, SVP of current production. Hallmark Channel is bringing Home & Family back for a third season. The weekday 10a lifestyle show "not only enhances viewers’ lives," said Bill Abbott, president and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks, "but also provides diverse opportunities for advertisers." A rainy day didn’t dampen spirits at NYC’s 620 Loft & Garden Wednesday night (cocktail, anyone?), as Syfy celebrated a slew of announcements after its Upfront.
The net’s new scripted development slate includes adaptations of graphic novels Clone (government conspiracy) and Letter 44 (alien construction project), and book series The Magicians, about a fantasy world that threatens Earth. Also ordered: Comedic docuseries Town of the Living Dead (wt), following a small town trying to make their own zombie movie, premieres Tuesday, October 7 at 10p. Ten-ep Killjoys, about interplanetary bounty hunters, debuts in 2015.
Syfy Digital announced social and second screen storytelling initiatives, including a game-to-TV Avatar joining the cast of the hit series Defiance; Syfy Now, debuting on Android phones and tablets this summer, an interactive handbook for new drama Dominion, and a new web experience for Syfy Sync for Sharknado 2 and Defiance.
Also coming up: Syfy‘s first original digital comedy series, Underlings. "Today we think about digital as a core part of our content experience, rather than a companion part," said EVP, marketing, digital and global brand strategy Michael Engleman. "Our storytelling strategy rests on three pillars: enabling greater participation so that fans can influence content and programming, extending the ‘first screen’ story to provide a deeper, richer narrative experience, and, lastly, providing greater access to what goes on behind the scenes. The net result is a more multi-screen brand of storytelling for a fan base that absolutely craves it."
