IN THE NEWS

NBC is going bold with year-round programming for 2021-22. “Our program strategy for NBC is singularly focused on driving growth by capturing audiences with can’t-miss event television and keeping them on the network with immersive scripted series,” said Frances Berwick, Chairman, Entertainment Networks, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We are leaning into pieces of the legacy that work, but not being precious about experimenting with things that can benefit from a change.”

In the fall, NBC welcomes new dramas “Ordinary Joe,” centered around the idea of how choices made in a single moment can alter the course of life forever; “La Brea,” which follows the aftermath of a massive sinkhole that opens in LA; and franchise extender “Law & Order: For the Defense.”

Comedy returns to the schedule in midseason, including new series “American Auto,” a workplace comedy from “Superstore” creator Justin Spitzer, and wine bar-set “Grand Crew,” from “Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s” Phil Augusta Jackson and Dan Goor. Also arriving midseason are true-crime limited series “The Thing About Pam” from Blumhouse Productions, starring Renee Zellweger, and the sixth and final season of “This Is Us.”

“black-ish” was renewed for an eighth and final season by ABC. Calling the news “bittersweet,” series creator Kenya Barris posted on social media, “In this day and age, it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for.”

Also coming back to the alphabet net are “The Conners,” “A Million Little Things” and “The Rookie,” all for fourth seasons. “The Goldbergs” has been renewed for season nine, and “Home Economics” for season two.

On ABC’s cancellation list were “black-ish” spin-off “mixed-ish,” which was not renewed for season three; sophomore legal drama “For Life”; freshmen “Call Your Mother” and “Rebel”; and “American Housewife” after five seasons.

CBS picked up to series bowling comedy “Smallwood,” starring Pete Holmes (“Crashing”), and medical drama “Good Sam,” headlined by Sophia Bush (“One Tree Hill”), and renewed two freshman comedies from Chuck Lorre Productions, “B Positive” and “United States of Al.”

Leaving the CBS lineup, but moving to streaming sib Paramount+, are “Clarice” for season two and “SEALTeam” for season five. Legal drama “All Rise” and comedy “The Unicorn” were both cancelled after two seasons.

Netflix has more in store for “Bridgerton” fans – and not just the previously announced renewals for three more seasons of the Shondaland smash. The streamer ordered a limited series prequel, focused on the rise and love life of Queen Charlotte, as well as young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury. Shonda Rhimes will write the series, and executive produce alongside Betsy Beers and Tom Verica. It was also announced that “Bridgerton” writer Jess Brownell has been named showrunner for seasons 3 and 4. Chris Van Dusen, who created the series based on the Julia Quinn novels, was showrunner on season 1 and is currently in production on season 2.

Former CBS CEO Les Moonves, who was ousted from the company in 2018 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, won’t receive any of his potential $120 million severance package. The money was kept in trust after CBS determined he was fired for cause and not entitled to the payout, and Moonves started arbitration proceedings. “The assets of the grantor trust will revert to the company in their entirety,” said a filing with the SEC. Moonves did receive a different settlement for an undisclosed amount, which he and ViacomCBS said will all go to “various charities.”

CNN anchor Don Lemon left fans confused and concerned when he announced on Friday that his show, “CNN Tonight With Don Lemon,” is “no more.” On Saturday, Lemon clarified via tweet that he still has a CNN show at 10p, but now it’s called “Don Lemon Tonight.”

Univision reported first quarter results that included 900,000 monthly users for streamer PrendeTV in its first month of operation, and an increase in core advertising revenue of 7%. “Our quarterly results demonstrate that Univision’s transformation is continuing to gain momentum,” said CEO Wade Davis. “Univision’s underlying business is optimizing as evidenced by the strong growth in advertising revenue and increases in both Adjusted OIBDA and operating cash flow driven by improved operating leverage.”

US-based media investment firm Narrative Capital purchased Sony Pictures Television’s portfolio of free-to-air broadcast television channels in the UK. The channels include Sony Movies, Sony Movies Action, Sony Movies Classic, Sony Channel, POP, Tiny POP and POP Max, as well as their digital assets. Thirty-five channel employees in the UK will remain in London under the new Narrative Entertainment banner.

Take a look around. Is there someone on your team deserving of a special call-out? The Cynopsis Top Women in Media Awards Gala is coming this fall, and nominations are due this Thursday, May 20. Fox handed a straight-to-series order to anthology drama “The Accused,” from Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa (“24”) and David Shore (“House”). Sony Pictures Television will co-produce with Fox Entertainment. Based on the UK series, Fox’s iteration is slated for the 2022-23 season.

Producer Nigel Lythgoe (“American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance”) is teaming with technology platform Triller Fight Club to create a new series, “So You Think You Can Fight.” The show will pair a celebrity action star with a pro fighter, as well as amateur boxers chosen through a talent search. Lythgoe will become Creative Partner, Visionary and an executive producer of Triller Fight Club .

Another reality show spin-off with “American Idol” connections landed an order from NBC. “AGT: Extreme,” from Simon Cowell, his Syco Entertainment and Fremantle, will feature outrageous daredevil acts. Cowell will serve as judge, as he does on “America’s Got Talent,” which returns for season 16 on Tuesday, June1. “AGT: Extreme” will make its debut mid-summer.

Discovery Channel is accelerating its motor programming with greenlights for two new shows. “Getaway Driver,” hosted by actress Michelle Rodriguez and rally champion Wyatt Knox, is described as “a real life “Fast & Furious;” while “The Hop” (wt) follows four elite lowriding garages. “We are constantly searching for ways to evolve our motor programming and bring engaging, new characters to our viewers,” said Nancy Daniels, Chief Brand Officer, Discovery & Factual. “These two new series will bring audiences along for the ride and highlight extraordinary aspects of the automotive world rarely seen on television.”

HGTV has greenlit a new home renovation series, “Buy It or Build It,” starring Dallas brothers who are licensed contractors. One brother’s goal is to find their clients properties with potential and give them a fresh look, while the other is looking to build a new home from the ground up. Once their clients decide whether to buy or build, the siblings and business partners deliver a dream home. The series is slated to premiere in spring 2022.

Casting notes: Gillian Anderson (“The Crown”) will guest as the mother of Elle Fanning’s character in season two of Hulu’s “The Great.”…Brian Van Holt (“Deputy”) has joined the cast of Peacock limited series “Joe Exotic.

Discovery+ has acquired SXSW winner “Lily Topples the World.” The documentary tells the story of 20-year-old Lily Hevesh, the world’s most acclaimed domino artist. Also on the streamer’s slate of documentaries, slated to launch worldwide this year, are “My Name Is Bulger” (launching June 17), telling the story of the family of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger; “The Smartest Kids in the World” (August 16), based on the bestselling book; “Growth Generation” (August 23), following the expansion of an educator’s indoor gardening curriculum; and “Crutch” (October 18), following a renowned performance artist on crutches.

Season two of the WNET Group’s summer learning and exploration series “Camp TV” launches Monday, June 21 on public television stations nationwide (check local listings).
