05/07/21: NBC Sports is partnering with Twitch for Olympic content

NBC Olympics is tapping Twitch to produce and deliver live content that will live on a new NBC Olympics Twitch channel for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, delivering “unique programming tailored to the Twitch community,” including highlight studio shows, game-ified pre-Olympic activations, Olympic athlete interviews and Olympic-themed gaming competitions. The first interactive experience on Twitch begins the week leading up to the Olympics before the Opening Ceremony. Twitch creators and their communities will work together to “keep the Torch alive” on the NBC Olympics Twitch channel. Viewers of the torch streams will need to work together to collect items and participate in chat to fan the flame and finally “Light the Cauldron” on the day of the Opening Ceremony.

NBC Olympics and Twitch will also host a pre-Opening Ceremony party featuring Olympic-themed segments from top creators, all taking place in an innovative virtual setting. This event will lead into the Olympics-themed content on the NBC Olympics Channel and offer daily, unique Twitch-produced content such as a daily interactive clip show, daily competition among three teams of Twitch creators, primetime sidecasting and a Live From Tokyo segment.

PROGRAMMING

Turner Sports has reportedly selected its faces for its incoming NHL package, tapping the many talents of Kenny Albert and Eddie Olczyk, according to multiple reports. Turner Sports reached a seven-year deal with the NHL for the league’s second TV package valued at $225 million per season NBC is in the final season of a 10-year contract.

Twitter revealed new sports entries (among other content) at its virtual NewFronts presentation that included the WNBA, MLB, NHL, and Riot Games. Notable elements include:
· Twitter and MLB extending their existing relationship to include a two-year content partnership bringing in live content and real-time highlights.
· Twitter and NBC Olympics partnering to amplify NBC Olympics’ coverage of the Tokyo Olympics by creating daily, original NBC programming on Twitter live from the host city, including a daily live show, “Talkin’ Tokyo.”
· Twitter will deliver to US fans live look-ins for every round of the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs — voted on by fans on Twitter — and this year, will have a live pregame show before every live look-in in addition to in-game highlights, co-branded content, and other engagement franchises.
· Twitter partnered with the League Championship Series (LCS) and Honda to offer the first-ever Twitter gaming watch party for the LCS Mid-Season Showdown, and will look to continue the party this summer for the LCS Championship.
· Twitter and the WNBA enter the fifth year of their partnership in 2021 as Twitter helps celebrate the league’s historic 25th season with a 12-game slate of live games on #WNBATwitterLive as well as real-time game highlights and postgame interviews.

Superstar Racing Experience revealed the format for its six-race short-track series that will debut this summer on Saturday nights in primetime on CBS and streaming live on Paramount+. Each event will consist of three parts: two 15-minute heat races and a 100-lap feature race, with the heats setting the starting lineup for the feature. Points earned in both heats and the feature will count toward the season-ending championship. The season-opening SRX race is June 12 at Stafford Motor Speedway with the live broadcast starting at 8p.

With The Spring League underway, FOX Sports is tapping a broadcast lineup for the 2021 season that sees FOX Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt, FOX NFL and college football analyst Brock Huard, FOX college football analysts Mark Helfrich and Petros Papadakis, and quarterback coach Jordan Palmer serve as TSL game analysts. They are joined in the booth by FOX Sports and Big Ten Network play-by-play announcers Kevin Kugler and Brandon Gaudin, as well as Alex Faust and Noah Eagle.

In other talent news, handicapper Kelly Stewart is joining ESPN as a sports betting analyst. Stewart will serve as an analyst on ESPN’s daily sports betting news and information program Daily Wager along with the Daily Wager podcast and other ESPN sports betting platforms including radio shows, podcasts and specials as well as on SportsCenter and across the network’s other programs. She will begin in June.

Paramount+ announced that the documentary “Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In” will exclusively premiere in the US on the streaming service on May 29. The film examines the life of soccer legend and Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson both in and out of the game.

ESPN will once again provide wall-to-wall coverage of the entire NC Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship from Gulf Shores, Ala., starting today. Duals will be televised across ESPN2 and ESPNU with individual court coverage streaming live on ESPN3. The commentating duos of Courtney Lyle and Holly McPeak and Sam Gore and Salima Rockwell will team up to call the action.

The 2021 U.S. Open Polo Championship, the third leg of the Gauntlet of Polo series, has officially closed out polo season in Wellington, Florida. The action of the final game, sponsored by The Palm Beaches and U.S. Polo Assn. will be broadcast on Sunday. CBS Sports Network will also televise an encore of the broadcast on May 15 at 8p.

The BIG3 announced the return of Toyota Motor North America as the league’s Official Vehicle Partner for the upcoming fourth season with the deal also including the return of the RAV4-Point Shot as well as interactive on-site activations for BIG3 fans. “Toyota has been an early and eager supporter of the BIG3, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome them back as a major partner again for season four,” said BIG3 Co-Founders Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz. “The 4-point shot is an iconic part of the BIG3 game, and we are looking forward to seeing more RAV4-Point Shots than ever this season.”

IMG client and Spanish tennis superstar Garbiñe Muguruza picked up two new partnerships this month. The first launched last week with Garbiñe starring in Nivea’s new campaign for their Q10 Plus Vitamin C Firming Body Lotion. She is the first tennis star to be an ambassador for the brand in Spain. In addition, Garbiñe can be seen in Jaguar’s, latest #UnaVidaMasExtraordinaria (A Life More Extraordinary) Campaign. IMPACT Wrestling entered into a landmark agreement with Samsung TV Plus, giving viewers access to IMPACT’s extensive library of premium professional wrestling content through both a dedicated IMPACT Wrestling Channel and on VOD. “This new partnership presents an invaluable opportunity for us to bring IMPACT Wrestling’s exclusive premium content to even more viewers across the country,” said Jaime Pollack, Anthem’s Chief Revenue Officer for its Sports Media Group. “We are excited to share our deep, generation-spanning library with Samsung TV Plus’ audience—giving wrestling fans both old and new a chance to enjoy all of the larger-than-life personas, legendary matches, and gripping story-telling that IMPACT Wrestling is known for.”

(ShotTracker) announced a “first of its kind” partnership with Playfly Sports to deliver real-time analytics via sensors to the participants of this weekend’s New Mexico State High School Basketball Championships in Albuquerque. It will mark the first time for an elite state-run and sanctioned championship where performance data capture will be collected and used to enhance the experience for coaches, scouts and through Playfly’s integration into in-arena video boards.

Buzzer, a new mobile platform for live sports personalized for fans, announced a new agreement to distribute NBA League Pass. As part of the agreement, beginning on May 8 fans will be able to buy multiple NBA League Pass offerings through Buzzer, building upon the platform’s goal of providing purchasing and viewing options to NBA fans in the US.

The National Basketball Retired Players Association launched the “Legends Locker Room” app, where they will have exposure to exclusive content, member-to-member communication, NBRPA programming, event information, commerce opportunities, career development resources and additional benefits to assist in their post-playing careers.

WSC Sports and the Canadian Elite Basketball League announced a partnership to create real-time video highlights using WSC Sports’ machine learning platform and distribute content to CEBL’s website, OTT platform and social channels. The League will be using WSC Sports’ platform to capture video of key plays and players in all CEBL games and automatically create highlights to be shared across digital and social platforms.

OverActive Media is opening the doors to the Red Bull Gaming Studio, courtesy of a multi-year partnership with the brand. The Red Bull Gaming Studio will be located inside OverActive Media’s headquarters in Toronto, is expected to host gaming events such as tournaments, speaker sessions, artist performances, live events, and broadcasts.

ELEAGUE’s final qualifying round for the EA FIFA 21 North American Online Cup starts Saturday as ELEAGUE hosts the fifth & final of its EA SPORTS FIFA 21 Global Series qualifying events at noon. This weekend’s PS4 matchups will be the first time that no defending champs are in the top six.

Allstar, a technology startup focused on democratizing gaming content, announced a partnership with TikTok to allow Allstar to engage its partner’s international audience, allowing users to directly sign into the gaming platform using their TikTok credentials. “Many gamers lack the resources to produce and share their greatest in-game moments,” said Allstar CEO Nick Cuomo. “What makes the TikTok platform so special is how easy it allows its users to participate as content creators.
