IN THE NEWS
Total national linear TV network advertising in the first quarter was up 4.7% to $9.1 billion, according to MoffattNathanson Research, but eliminate NBC’s Winter Olympics from the count and national TV was down 2.6%. AVOD services jumped 63% to $1.9 billion in revenue.
The Weather Channel has launched free television network The Weather Channel en Español, the first 24/7 Spanish-language free-streaming weather news network in the US. “The Hispanic marketplace is indexing extremely well with streaming services and is severely underserved,” said Byron Allen, founder, chairman and CEO of TWC parent Allen Media Group. “Our launch of The Weather Channel en Español is historic, and is a recognition of the continued and significant growth of the U.S. Hispanic population and the constant need to keep the entire public informed and safe as multi-billion dollar weather disasters are on the rise – especially in communities where Spanish is spoken as both the primary and secondary language in millions of households throughout America.” Sponsors include Ford, GEICO, General Motors, Toyota and Walmart.
“Pictionary,” the first-run syndicated game show based on the Mattel game, is now cleared in 90% of the country, ensuring a Fall 2022 national launch. Stations from CBS Stations, Sinclair, Nexstar, Tegna and Gray are the most recent to sign on to broadcast the strip, which had previously been cleared by Fox Television Stations. “Game shows have been a consistent performer for stations, so they really embraced the opportunity to add a well-known brand like ‘Pictionary’ to their lineups,” said Jonathan Bingaman, EVP of Sales for CMV. “We’re excited to launch this franchise nationally this fall.” Jerry O’Connell (“The Talk”) hosts the show, which had test run on Fox Stations last summer.
Jimmy Kimmel will miss some episodes of ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” after testing positive for Covid. “Our daughter brought us covid (even though we specifically asked her not to),” tweeted the vaxxed and boosted late night host, who assured, “All feeling fine.”
TV winners of the inaugural Clue Awards, honoring true crime content, include Epix docuseries “Fall River”; Oxygen series “Cold Justice”; and Oxygen film “Escaping Captivity: The Kara Robinson Story.”

CTV spend jumped to $15.2 billion, up 57% in 2021, according to the ninth annual IAB report on online advertising spend. Three out of four buyers labeled CTV a “must buy,” due to first-party brand data, location information on viewers and shopping data. But while connected TV viewing will account for 36% of the total time spent with both linear TV and Connected TV combined in 2022, only 18% of the total video ad dollars are being committed to Connected TV, which includes Connected TV (CTV) viewing, linear, social, and short-form video, according to the report, “2021 Video Ad Spend and 2022 Outlook.” “Digital video is a driving force for buyers and will continue to be in 2022,” said Eric John, VP, IAB Media Center. “However, while CTV leads the substantial growth of digital video ad spend, the amount of dollars currently allocated to CTV is not proportionate to the amount of viewer time spent with the channel.”
Three original films are scheduled to premiere on Peacock in 2023: “Shooting Stars,” “Praise This” and “The Killer.” The films are part of the previously announced collaboration with Universal Pictures to produce films made exclusively for Peacock. “We know people join Peacock to watch movies, so we are constantly adding more to serve fans,” said Kelly Campbell, President, Peacock and Direct-to-Consumer and International, NBCUniversal.
Speaking of, Peacock also struck a deal for Lionsgate’s Pay 2 window starting in 2024. Films will be available on Peacock and NBCUniversal networks after a run on Starz. “Movies are among the most-streamed titles on Peacock, and we continue to expand our premium film offering from top studios, like Lionsgate, to ensure customers enjoy a steady stream of the biggest and best films to enjoy throughout the year,” said Val Boreland, EVP, Content Acquisition, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming.

UPFRONT UPDATES & CALENDAR
At its NewFront hosted by Vivica A. Fox with Nick Cannon as DJ, Tubi touted its growing and diverse audience, and announced it is releasing over 100 Tubi Originals in the year ahead. Tubi jumped to 51 million active users last quarter and a record-breaking 3.6 billion hours watched in 2021, a 40% year-over-year increase in total viewing time. Tubi also reported its audience is nationally representative across geographic, economic and educational segments, and includes a large multicultural audience, comprising 40% of its user base.
Channels for Fox Entertainment’s “The Masked Singer,” “TMZ” and Studio Ramsay Global’s “Gordon Ramsay” will join Tubi Originals and Tubi en Español, which will soon be available on the platform. “Tubi’s approach of personalization allows for content for every community, and our record growth shows it’s working. We’re doubling down on this approach while delivering our brand partners transparency and an opportunity to reach incremental, diverse and highly engaged consumers,” said Mark Rotblat, Chief Revenue Officer at Tubi.
The Highline Stages in NYC was the site for Peacock’s first NewFronts presentation, where the streamer unveiled two new ad innovations. The Peacock Frame Ad keeps users connected to content while a brand frames the experience with contextually relevant messaging and offers for purchase. The streaming service is also exploring the Peacock In-Scene Ad, which would integrate a brand’s product and/or messaging during post-production. The prototype aims to find the right moments within top shows for more personalized messaging. Peacock Streaming Council Members will be the first partners to test these new ad innovations. “The Peacock NewFront is the next step in NBCUniversal’s series of partner events, designed to create a symphony of opportunity for our partners,” said Josh Feldman, Global Chief Marketing Officer for NBCUniversal Advertising & Partnerships. “At One22, we unveiled the data-driven future of media and technology. Today, we put a spotlight on the future of streaming, and how we are furthering our commitment to Commercial Innovation with two new additions to the Peacock ad experience. As we look ahead to the Upfront later this month, we’ll continue to celebrate the content that informs, entertains and shapes our world.”
Starting with the May 1 season 14 premiere of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Peacock is now the next-day streaming home for Bravo series. The news comes months ahead of the previously announced September timeline. Also making the move from Hulu are “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” “Summer House,” “Below Deck,” and more, as well as upcoming series. “Next-day availability on Peacock expands Bravo’s reach to a whole new audience who otherwise may not have access to the network, while also giving our ‘Bravoholics’ an easy way to catch up or dig deep on past seasons of their favorite shows,” said Frances Berwick, Chairman, Entertainment Networks. “Bravo viewers are some of the most loyal fans across television, and by making our shows accessible to this new demographic, we’re growing that highly engaged audience which ultimately brings more value to the Bravo brand across all our platforms.”
