Apple’s App Tracking Transparency feature became available to iPhone and iPad users last week with the release of iOS 14.5. Once the update is downloaded, unless an app asks for and receives permission to track a user’s out-of-app activities, it cannot track activities across other companies’ apps and websites. If users turn off the “request to track” option, apps’ requests will automatically be denied. The impact on developers and advertisers will depend on how many people decide to opt out of tracking; early data from mobile attribution company AppsFlyer says opt-out rates could hit 39%.

In more Apple news, the tech behemoth is being charged with anticompetitive behavior by the EU, which issued a “statement of objections” regarding Apple’s app store rules. “The Commission takes issue with the mandatory use of Apple’s own in-app purchase mechanism imposed on music streaming app developers to distribute their apps via Apple’s App Store,” wrote the regulators. “The Commission is also concerned that Apple applies certain restrictions on app developers preventing them from informing iPhone and iPad users of alternative, cheaper purchasing possibilities.”

With a bewildering array of content available to stream, Netflix has launched a “Play Something” feature, aimed at helping the indecisive find something to watch. “There are times when we just don’t want to make decisions,” wrote Cameron Johnson, Netflix Director, Product Innovation, in a blog post. The feature is available on Netflix TV apps, and will soon be available on mobile for Android devices.

ATX Networks introduced the GigaWave Digital Link Amplifier-HUB, a field-hardened, gain-flattened EDFA platform optimized for digital optical transport in long-distance multi-wavelength applications. The newest addition to the company’s GigaWave Digital Optical Transport portfolio is optimized to enable cable operators and other service providers to reduce the cost and complexity of extending broadband services to residents and businesses in remote regions, and is also optimized to assist service providers in targeting communities identified as unserved or underserved by recent publicly funded broadband initiatives.

Synamedia announced Synamedia Gravity, a managed service that makes it easier for operators and service providers to offer a richer suite of advanced broadband and video capabilities to their SMB and residential customers. With it, operators can bundle new value-added services such 4K/UHD/HDR, Wi-Fi mesh, self-service portals, etc. to create a more compelling package for their SMB market.

Dating app S’More has launched S’More TV, a feature intended to engage users with dating advice, tips, and dating stories from celebrities. Daters can comment on videos and reply to comments from other users. Celebrity videos from their S’More Live on IGTV have been integrated in-app. “Daters want more than a superficial headshot out of their dating apps, especially post COVID,” said Adam Cohen Aslatei, CEO of S’More. “The majority of singles we talk to want new ways to connect on-app that go beyond awkward icebreakers and surface-level niceties. That’s why we launched S’More TV, our first community feature that drives more organic and substantive conversations.”

On the heels of the announcement that Apple is letting podcasters sell subscriptions, Spotify is planning to follow suit – with one big difference. While Apple charges podcasters $20/year for access and takes a 30% cut of subscription revenue for the first year of a subscription (and 15% of revenue thereafter), Spotify users will only be charged for payment processing. The company plans to start taking a 5% cut of subscriptions in 2023. Spotify subscribers are also now able to stream music tracks within the Facebook app.

Google and Univision struck a new, multi-year, strategic partnership. Google will help Univision consolidate its multiple digital distribution platforms, modernize its production systems, create a new customer data warehouse, and migrate key enterprise applications to Google Cloud. The move allows Univision to apply artificial intelligence and machine learning across content libraries for personalized recommendations, and forge stronger advertising relationships with its audiences via insights derived from data.

Apple announced it expects to add 20,000 new domestic jobs over the next five years and bankroll Apple TV+ productions across 20 states, as part of a $430 billion investment in the US. “At this moment of recovery and rebuilding, Apple is doubling down on our commitment to US innovation and manufacturing with a generational investment reaching communities across all 50 states,” said CEO Tim Cook. “We’re creating jobs in cutting-edge fields — from 5G to silicon engineering to artificial intelligence — investing in the next generation of innovative new businesses, and in all our work, building toward a greener and more equitable future.” Expansions include Apple campuses in San Diego and Culver City, and a new engineering hub in North Carolina.

Comscore renewed and expanded its deal to provide ViacomCBS with national TV measurement, an agreement that enables the media company to guarantee its traditional linear advertising campaigns on Comscore’s national TV currency. “Under its new ownership structure, Comscore is making meaningful strides in investment, engineering, and product innovation to support the industry’s evolving needs as a cornerstone measurement provider,” said John Halley, ViacomCBS COO of Advertising Revenue.

TikTok made some C-suite swaps. Shouzi Chew, CFO of TikTok parent ByteDance, will also become CEO, while Vanessa Pappas, interim CEO after Kevin Mayer exited last summer, moves to the role of COO.

Alphabet aced its first quarter results. Total ad revenue at the company rose to $44.7 billion in 1Q21 from $33.7 billion the year prior, crushing forecasts. Total sales including Google Cloud hit $55.3 billion, while YouTube ad revenue soared 48%, topping $6 billion in 1Q20.

Facebook also handily topped analyst projections, with 2.85 billion monthly active users in the last quarter, up 10%, and ad-driven revenue jumping 48%, to $26.2 billion. At $3.30, earning per share were up 93%.

Apple, too, exceeded expectations, posting a March quarter record revenue of $89.6 billion, up 54% year-over-year. “This quarter reflects both the enduring ways our products have helped our users meet this moment in their own lives, as well as the optimism consumers seem to feel about better days ahead for all of us,” said Tim Cook.

Spotify total revenue for 1Q21 was up 16%, with a 46% rise in ad sales. Growth in active users was 24%, to 356 million, “modestly below” internal expectations. “Reported revenue was toward the top end of our guidance range due to subscriber outperformance, slightly lower headwinds from foreign exchange rates,” said the company.

ADVERTISING

Vizio and Verizon Media entered a partnership to deliver new cross-platform and connected TV advertising solutions, anchored in unique TV viewership data and premium programmatic inventory access. Through the deal, Verizon Media gains demand-side platform access to Vizio’s Inscape viewership data from more than 18 million opted-in Vizio Smart TVs.

People-based advertising software company Viant Technology announced an expanded partnership with DoubleVerify. As two newly public companies, they have integrated DoubleVerify’s Inventory Quality Management into Viant’s DSP, Adelphic, providing an additional layer of data transparency, quality assurance, fraud prevention, and brand safety controls on top of those offered by the Adelphic platform.

Magnite closed its previously-announced acquisition of SpotX from RTL Group. The combined company’s clients now include A+E Networks, AMC Networks, Crackle, Discovery, FOX, fuboTV, LG, Roku, Samsung, Sling TV and Vizio. “Scale and reaching the largest possible audience is the name of the game when attracting the demand our CTV and video clients need,” said Michael Barrett, President & CEO of Magnite. “Acquiring SpotX positions us to become the world’s largest, independent source of highly-coveted CTV and video inventory.”

Programmatic research technology company Lucid has partnered with demand side platform The Trade Desk for new offering Brand Lift. Brand marketers and advertisers can ask core branding questions to measure awareness, ad recall, consideration, purchase intent, recommendations, and favorability for their cross-channel campaigns; Lucid then leverages its marketplace to gather survey responses from test and control groups.

Out-of-home specialists Talon and Buntin Out-of-Home Media have struck a strategic partnership, creating a new entity named Talon-Buntin led by Talon America CEO Jim Wilson. In addition to serving an existing and expanding set of US client brands, the entity will also support OOH media needs for The Buntin Group, a Nashville-based brand communications firm.

TVSquared has integrated with SpotX to power real-time analytics on delivery, audience, and outcomes for national, regional, and local connected TV campaigns. Connecting ad exposure to real-world outcomes, TVSquared’s ADvantage platform delivers proof of performance and analytics that inform programmatic TV buying, including audience planning and targeting. SpotX clients can find optimal reach and frequency, quantify incremental reach beyond linear, understand performance across publishers and inventory levels, and measure response by weekday, daypart, device type, creative, and campaign.

Streaming ads saw a nice pop in 1Q21, with ad attempts up 4%, ad impressions up 13% and missed-ad opportunities dropping 16% quarter-over-quarter, according to Conviva’s Q1 State of Streaming report. Big screens had a 73% share of global streaming viewing.

In addition to its library titles, Fox AVOD Tubi will feature 140 hours of original “premium independent-minded titles across the Black Cinema, thriller, horror, sci-fi, romance and western genres” starting this fall. Fox made the announcement ahead of the streamer’s NewFront presentation today, saying Fox divisions like Bento Box and Fox Alternative Entertainment will be key suppliers. Fox also reported viewing time for Tubi rose 54% in 1Q21, with a median age of 37 – 20 years lower than the linear audience, with 39% of its audience identifying as multicultural.

Pluto TV is expanding their dedicated category for US Hispanics with Pluto TV en español. With the expansion, the streamer’s US Hispanic offerings will double, offering nearly 50 Spanish-speaking channels across the platform, totaling over one-fifth of Pluto TV’s overall channel line-up.

Allen Media Group streaming platform Local Now is available for all Verizon Fios TV customers with the newest set top-box models. Customers are able to watch Local Now on Fios Channel 601 and through the Fios TV “Widgets” menu on Verizon Fios TV One, Fios TV One Mini, VMS1100 and the IPC1100 platforms.
