04.30.14
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 30, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Mia and Me, from animation studio Rainbow and Lucky Punch GmbH/M4e is headed to Nick Jr. on May 3, airing Saturdays and Sundays at 7p. The hybrid live-action and CGI series-already a hit in more than 75 international markets–follows 12-year-old Mia as she juggles her life in the real world and in the magical kingdom of Centopia. As well as its US debut on Nick Jr., the series has been picked up by Turner in France and premiered on Boing in March. A full range of merchandise has been launched in established territories, including a line from international toy partner Mattel.
Blythe and her furry friends return to Hub Network for a third season of Littlest Pet Shop, beginning May 31 at 9:30 a ET/ 6:30a PT. Julie McNally Cahill, Tim Cahill, Kirsten Newland and Stephen Davis are back as exec producers for the series, which is produced by Hasbro Studios.
Disney Channel Storytellers, the writer development program Disney is launching with It’s a Laugh Productions, officially begins taking applications this week at www.DisneyChannelStorytellers.com. Designed to foster the next generation of series creators and screenwriters for kids, tweens and families, Storytellers is a 20-week salaried program that also provides participants with Writers Guild of America membership eligibility credits. The program will provide three applicants the opportunity to write and develop programming for Disney Channel and Disney XD-branded platforms. Each participant gets one live-action script commissioned as a series pilot, with mentoring from concept ideation and writing to network pitching and pilot production. Candidates must submit at least two half-hour, live-action comedy writing samples. The program runs August 2014-January 2015 in Burbank.
Comcast X1 customers will soon be able to get Common Sense Media ratings for live TV listings in addition to on demand content, as part of upgrades to the service announced yesterday at the Cable Show. Other upgrades include the ability of triple play customers to live stream personal video from their mobile devices, over the Internet, directly to the television.
DreamWorks Animation will take a $57 million write-down for Mr. Peabody and Sherman, after the film failed to perform to expectations at the box office. The adjustment contributed to a net loss of $42.9 million on revenue of $147.2 million for the first three months of 2014, compared with earnings of $5.6 million on revenue of $135.6 million in the same period last year. "The box office shortfall of Mr. Peabody & Sherman is evidence of the current challenges we face within our feature film segment, and restoring the strength in our core business is my No. 1 priority today," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation.
Disney plans to premiere the Star Wars Rebels trailer on Star Wars Day-Sunday, May 4. Disney XD will feature the trailer during the premiere of Lego’s Star Wars: The New Yoda Chronicles at 7p. It will also air on Disney Channel, ABC, ABC Family, Fusion, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 at varying times throughout the day, and across Digital sites including www.StarWars.com, www.ABC.com, www.ESPN.com and www.Disney.com.
No one knows kids content better than a kid. CynKids is pleased to begin offering monthly links to reviews of children’s and family films by the Coalition for Quality Children’s Media-sponsored Kids First! and its team of 24 youth reporters, ages 7-16. These kids (who are no doubt will take away my job one day:) attend premieres, press junkets and press screenings for children’s and family films. Take a look at their review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which opens this weekend. http://www.kidsfirst.org/kidsfirstnews/2014/04/29/the-amazing-spider-man-2-great-for-fans-great-for-non-fans-special-effects-are-show-stoppers/
DreamWorks-owned AwesomenessTV CEO Brian Robbins knows a good thing when he sees 6 seconds of it. Robbins signed Vine stars Nash Grier and Cameron Dallas to the Awesomeness TV network in a deal that also includes a movie. Grier and Dallas, who between them have 12 million Vine followers, will also be exclusively represented for sponsorship across all social media platforms except Vine by AwesomenessTV and for advertising as well on YouTube.

US sales of licensed toys grew 3% last year to reach $5.3 billion, with licensed toys representing 29% of total brick-and-mortar toy dollar sales, and 23% of total online dollar sales. The top Licenses for 2013 were: Cars The Movie, Disney Princesses, Mickey & Friends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Wars. This according to a new report from The NPD Group, which also lists Disney’s Frozen among the top-selling licenses in Q1 2014. Other key Q1 brand drivers are Disney Princess, Mickey & Friends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Wars. Among other key findings:
* Among millennial females with kids 2-12, 64% of respondents said their child has a particular brand or character they prefer.
* In 2013, many animated movies were gender neutral but Monsters University, Despicable Me 2 and Disney’s Planes may have appealed more to boys. Boys who received licensed toys in the 3-11 age group accounted for 44% of all licensed dollar sales last year, while girls in the same age group represented 26%.
