NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Fandango has bought the largest movie trailer and content YouTube network, ZEFR‘s Movieclips. Movieclips consists of 25 YT channels with seven million subs and averages 200 million monthly views. "The acquisition opens up us to deliver electronic movie ticketing to a larger audience," Paul Yanover told Cynopsis. Fandango is also unfurling a new Twitter Card feature that allows moviegoers to view information about upcoming films and link to ticketing directly in a tweet. The first flicks to use it will be The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Godzilla. "Mobile is our business, and Twitter is an environment in which movie fans talk about the films they love, and where actors and directors talk about their work," said Yanover. "So Twitter’s a great setting to streamline this activity."

Maker Studios has partnered with Jukin Media to license its viral video clips to TV networks and brands. Mashable reports Maker is developing Jukin’s top network FailArmy (which holds more than 30 viral video channels) into its own website to host videos, while Jukin will be able to utilize Maker’s platform, marketing and talent pool.

CONTENT MEDIA

Netflix will premiere the final six-episode season of The Killing on August 1. The Killing was originally on AMC for three seasons, but was cancelled and picked up for the fourth season when Netflix bought the rights from Fox Television Studios. The first three seasons are available on the streaming service now.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Hulu released the new remote control feature for mobile devices for the Hulu Plus app. While watching content on iOS, Android, Xbox One, PS3 or PS4, the app will be detected with a "cast" button so users can control the pause/resume, seek or rewind capabilities through the remote.

The Weather Channel revamped its mobile app yesterday. New features like Social Weather allow users to share local weather conditions with others in the area. The newly designed app is available for free on iOS devices.

Google‘s Chromecast added more than 100 channels of free web video, and a navigation guide from MediaMail Technologies’ PlayOn. The $35 device already includes apps from Hulu Plus, Pandora and HBO Go since it launched last July.

RESEARCH

POPSUGAR and Scripps‘ video network ulive released a study of how lifestyle video impacts purchasing behavior for women 18-49 and how brands can benefit. POPSUGAR and SNI will expand further on the research at their NewFront events on April 30 and May 1. Before then, here are some highlights:

  • Women watch video that entertains (74 percent), helps them learn (71 percent) and inspires (60 percent).
  • After watching a lifestyle video, 66 percent of women seek more information on a brand and 60 percent share videos with friends and family on social media.
  • 50 percent of avid lifestyle video consumers (women streaming 240+ minutes a month) visited a site or store to purchase product they saw advertised.
  • 49% of women want to see more videos that provide "how-to instructions" on accomplishing a task, cooking a meal, or learning an exercise. Women want more personalization, including content that’s based on their interests (46%) and is short and high quality (30%)

Music video product placements are working, according to a new Nielsen study. Those who notice brands in music video saw lift in eight percent on average of the viewers’ purchase intent, improved perception and overall awareness of a brand. The brand effect reflects how it’s placed in a music video rather than the number of on-screen seconds it captures. For example, the study found five seconds of exposure created 35 percent brand lift, which is the same as a 35-60 second appearance.

With the Digital Content NewFronts kicking off next week in New York City, Cynopsis caught up with Microsoft General Manager of TV & Video of Microsoft Advertising Scott Ferris about the tech company’s event on April 28.

There are more publishers putting on an official NewFront this year. What do you think this says about the industry as a whole?
It speaks to the proliferation of broadband connections on cable and 4G LTE wireless networks, where consumers are seeking to consume video content on demand, where and when they want.

What part does Microsoft’s Xbox play in TV, online video and gaming?
Xbox takes gaming to a whole new level. Also, our Xbox fans and users want the best games, TV, movies, music and sports all in one place. With the advent of Xbox One, they don’t have to compromise. They can switch instantly from one to another, or enjoy two services at once so they never miss a moment. Furthermore, they can talk with family and friends on Skype while watching TV.

How are you approaching April 28?
