NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Hulu picked up exclusive VOD rights to TNT drama The Last Ship, through a new deal with Turner Broadcasting. Executive produced by Michael Bay and starring Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra and Adam Baldwin, the series will return for a second season on TNT on June 21.
 
Amazon
will start streaming original series in High Dynamic Range display on Prime Instant Video later this year. Shows Transparent, Bosch, Mozart in the Jungle and Alpha House will be the first to be available in the HDR high quality video, which quadruples the screen resolution to 3840 by 2160 pixels. Amazon first launched series in 4K Ultra HD high-resolution video in December. The service did not say if the HDR video on Prime Instant would be available only with specific Ultra HD TV devices.
 
Global distribution and production company GRB Entertainment will take Camp Takota, a movie starring YouTube celebs Grace Helbig (2.1 million subscribers) Hannah Hart (1.8 million subs) and Mamrie Hart (one million subs), to MIPTV for global distribution. “We have been planning our move into the ‘digital influencer movie world’ for some time… Camp Takota was a huge success with its digital release and now will be available to the International marketplace for the first time outside the digital platform landscape,” GRB President and CEO Gary R. Benz said.

Snickers enlisted 13 video bloggers to help the candy brand promote the campaign “You’re Not You When You’re Hungry” with their own take. "Between them, the international vloggers in this campaign have over 7 million subscribers, generating huge global reach for this innovative digital extension of our campaign,” Snickers brand director Allison Miazga-Bedrick said. The concept was conceived at AMV in London by Alan Wilson & Diccon Driver and globally with BBDO.

Why is it so critical to have a social TV strategy?
Fans expect it now. It’s one of the few cases where having a branded hashtag makes a big difference – fans want to be a part of the "official" conversation about their favorite TV shows. And from a purely monetary standpoint, getting people involved in your show, watching it in real time means that the chance they’re actually seeing the commercials you’re airing is far, far greater than if they’re time-shifting.
 
How does data intersect with social TV?
Data has everything to do with social TV. It has helped save shows that might have been on the bubble, due to massive user engagement in real time. All those interactions are little dots of data – data that show-runners can use to adjust plotlines, fight for renewal and do all sorts of things – they weren’t able to do with just weekly statistical sampling.
 
What platform is best for social TV?
Hands down, Twitter. I believe that Twitter has single-handedly saved real-time TV watching, because of the conversations that go on around it. The speed of the flow, the ability to use platforms such as TweetChat, TweetDeck or Twubs to follow just your hashtag makes it so simple. In addition, many shows have actors, directors, writers and producers live-tweeting along and interacting with the fans.
 
Why are there more failures than successes with social TV platforms?
There are only so many ways to skin a cat – and many people who are engaging socially while watching don’t want to have to go to a separate platform to do it. TVTag (which started out as GetGlue) did it for a little while, but the ubiquity of Twitter and Facebook simply made those redundant.
 
Who’s the one speaker you’re looking forward to hearing at the summit?
I’m a pretty big data nerd, so I’m looking forward to "Making Sense of All that Data: What Matters and What Doesn’t.” There’s a great lineup there. Plus, I’ve been teaching Applying Social Media Analytics at NYU, so I need to stay on top of the best practices in many industries. I’m also really looking forward to the Top Women In Digital awards. I’m a presenter and I love seeing other women in the field recognized.

Albert Cheng will leave his position as Disney/ABC Television Group’s Vice President and Chief Product Officer of Digital Media. He had been in the role for the past decade; he was chosen by then-Disney/ABC Group Chief Anne Sweeney to head up digital efforts.

 
 
DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY
 

Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show) new web series Halal In The Family debuted last week on Funny or Die. The four-episode show uses humor to discuss myths about Muslims, and was produced with a crowd-funding campaign. “Working on The Daily Show, I saw firsthand the depth of the challenges facing American Muslims,” Mandvi said. “I also saw how effective satire could be to open people up to thinking differently about this issue, while providing a balm to those suffering anti-Muslim bias.” The series also stars Sakina Jaffrey (House of Cards) and special guests Samantha Bee, Triq “Black Thought” Trotter and Jordan Klepper.
