Aggregator: An aggregator is an internet-based tool or application that collects and curates content from many different websites and displays it in one central location. The movie review site Rotten Tomatoes is a good example.
And now Apple may enter the OTT TV space too – kind of. Re/code reports that the tech giant is interested in selling a TV package that consists entirely of HBO, Showtime, and Starz. (Now that’s a skinny bundle.) Apple has already reportedly approached the three networks. Apple actually sells those channels already, but individually. The difference would be selling them as a package, as conventional pay-TV companies do. The difference here is that, unlike with pay-TV providers, users wouldn’t have to subscribe to a basic TV package before accessing the premium bundle. The package would be accessible via iOS devices, as well as through Apple TV set-top boxes.
AOL CEO Tim Armstrong confirmed that, once Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo closes, AOL and Yahoo will be merged into one entity. Its name? Oath. Current Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer won’t be joining Oath, according to sources who spoke to Re/code.

By now you’ve heard about the widely-reported advertiser boycotts of YouTube, which came in response to revelations that ads were appearing alongside extremist videos. The question is, how much will it hurt Google? RBC Capital Markets has said that the boycotts won’t have a huge impact. But some estimates project the company’s annual revenue loss at anywhere between $750 million and $1 billion. At a moment like this, it’s helpful to take a look at what’s happening in real time. According to the advertising data firm Pathmatics, YouTube’s overall ad revenue over the past month or so (running through March 30) has actually remained fairly steady. Granted, as Pathmatics acknowledges, its dataset isn’t flawless, and there’s no guaranteeing that things won’t change. But if indeed YouTube’s revenue doesn’t decline, it’s worthwhile to understand why: The video giant draws on an enormous pool of advertisers, and boycotting brands – even major ones – can be replaced.
Michael Bologna and Jamie Power, both veterans of media-buying giant GroupM, have started a new company with backing from Cross MediaWorks. Called one2one Media, the new firm focuses on addressable advertising. It will provide brands and agencies with planning, implementation, and measurement solutions. Bologna, formerly the President of GroupM’s Modi Media, will serve as the new company’s President. Power, who formerly served as Modi Media’s Managing Partner, will serve as one2one Media’s COO.
Roku announced that it will now guarantee demographic targeting for TV advertisers. The device-maker says that marketers can now measure campaigns on its platform using demographic metrics – similar to those used for linear TV – courtesy of Nieslen’s Digital Ad Ratings product.
We’re about to find out if the subscription model is viable when it comes to VR. HTC, maker of the HTC Vive VR headset, is launching Viveport, a $6.99-per-month service featuring VR experiences and games. Subs will be able to download up to five titles every month. The service debuts today; it was initially announced at CES in January.
Just days ago, Hulu acquired a ton of new Spanish-language titles from Sony and Telemundo. That, it seems, was enough. As of March 31, the service lost licensing rights to over 20 Spanish-language shows from Univision Communications. A handful of other Univision shows will leave the service later this month. “Titles come and go on SVOD platforms,” said Univision in a statement. “We are currently in discussions with Hulu regarding the best windowing strategy for Univision’s premier content, which until now included current programming.”
Verizon’s go90 service hasn’t had an easy go of it since its launch in late 2015. It immediately struggled to reach its intended millennial audience, and numerous layoffs came earlier this year. But those struggles were followed by a recent app redesign, which debuted just last week. And in a new sign that go90 is searching for a new direction, the app is now diving heavily into the linear TV pooI. In a deal with Warner Bros., go90 will become the exclusive streaming platform for all past seasons Veronica Mars, Fringe, Stalker, Babylon 5, Believe, Almost Human, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Six of the seven shows debut on the app today; the other one, Veronica Mars, will debut on g090 in May.
ESPN has released a revamped app for Apple TV. One big new update is the addition of automatic live-streaming: For viewers who are authenticated with a pay-TV provider, the app will start playing live content as soon as it’s opened. In addition, the updated app now features a collection of curated on-demand video content from sporting events and studio shows. And the interface now makes it easier for users to browse content based on specific channel or sport.
The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirstDigital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Wattpad just hired an exec from the TV world. The site, which focuses on user-generated content such as articles and fan fiction, has named Eric Lehrman as Head of Content Development for Wattpad Studios, its entertainment division. Best known as the former VP of Original Scripted Programming at USA Network, Lerhrman will oversee Wattpad’s TV deals, which currently include first-look pacts with Turner and Universal Cable Productions. In addition, Wattpad has named Abby Ho as head of Wattpad Stars, a platform that offers writers various promotional and paid opportunities to help grow their audiences. Ho formerly served as head of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s digital creator network.
Digital ad tech company Simulmedia has hired Harold Morgenstern and Jerry Canning. Morgenstern, formerly the founder and CEO of the consulting firm Media Pro Consultants, will serve as General Manager of Agency Development and Strategic Partnerships. And Canning, who joins the company from Facebook, will serve as VP of Sales.
The audience-targeting software provider Telmar has named Marcia Swart as Deputy Managing Director for Africa. She previously worked at Mindshare Johannesburg, where she served as Director of Strategy & Business Planning.
