Dish Network’s Sling TV snagged HBO for its slate of OTT offerings yesterday. After consumers sign up for the $20/month Best of Live TV service, an extra $15 will buy them the ability to watch a live HBO channel and a VOD library similar to what’s on HBO Go and the upcoming HBO Now app. Sling partners include ESPN, Disney Channel and Food Network and programming from networks such as AMC and Epix.
Netflix’s first docu-series Chef’s Table will debut on its menu starting April 26. From filmmaker David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi), the six-part series focuses on chefs and their kitchens all over the world. Chef’s Table will join other Netflix- acquired documentaries such as Oscar-nominated Virunga, Rashida Jones’ produced Hot Girls Wanted, What Happened, Miss Simone? and E-Team.
…in more Netflix news, the streaming service renewed Bloodline for a second season. The drama is from executive producers Todd A. Kessler, Daniel Zelman and Glenn Kessler and stars Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight), Linda Cardellini (ER), and Sissy Spacek (Big Love).
AOL will distribute Fox Sports game highlights and video as well as shows such as the @TheBuzzer and Garbage Time on its properties. The two companies will co-develop programming along with coverage of major sports including the NFL, Major League Baseball, college football, UFC, NASCAR, EFA Champions League and World Cup soccer. AOL also has a deal with Derek Jeter’s The Players’ Tribune.
Facebook introduced the new app Riff yesterday, which shoots video for up to 20 seconds and invites friends to join forces. “The potential pool of creative collaborators can grow exponentially, so a short video can become an inventive project between circles of friends you can share to Facebook or anywhere on the Internet,” FB Product Manager Josh Miller said in a blog yesterday. Additionally, Miller told TechCrunch that the app is meant to help FB learn more about video and “how people want to share, what kinds of video experiences make it easy to share, how people choose to use video to engage with others and if they want more tools.”
Starz launched its international SVOD service Starz Play Arabia in 17 countries today including Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. The company’s first Starz service outside of the U.S. will offer original series such as Black Sails, Power, Survivor’s Remorse and The White Queen. The service will cost $13.99 a month, and be available for PCs, Macs, iOS and Android devices.
The online channel for bilingual kids in North America, Oznoz.com, partnered with children’s programming distributor Splash Entertainment, LLC. The deal will make Oznoz the host of Chloe’s Closet, Dive Olly Dive, Cosmic Quantum, Pet Alien, ToddWorld and The DaVincibles in Castilian Spanish, neutral Spanish, French, Korean, Portuguese and Russian. Splash joins Oznoz along with Nelvana, Sesame Street and HIT Entertainment. The channel is available for free on iOS and Android devices.

Discovery Communications and sell-side tech provider clypd teamed up to launch a new TV sales solution. Discovery will use the clypd platform to streamline the buying process and use audiences in the TV inventory in an automated process. Clypd recently announced the TV solution clypd Optimize, Deal ID and an API for programmatic TV advertising.
RDK Management, LLC announced the availability for app developers to remotely create and test apps on top of the RDK with TV app solutions company Metrological’s RDK App Emulator. “This new developer environment gives app developers of any size the ability to develop and test new RDK applications on their own laptops, which will help extend innovative new app experiences to the TV,” Metrological’s Chief Technology Officer Albert Dahan said.
Marketing analytics software MarketShare acquired DataSong, an analytics company that specializes in retail marketing and consumer targeting. In addition, MarketShare also unveiled its new MarketShare DecisionCloud (MDC) software platform with DataSong technology integrated. MarketShare has partnerships with J.D. Power, Twitter, Salesforce, Turner, SAP, Google, Amazon Web Services and LiveRamp.
Ad management company Sizmek released its Viewability Benchmark Report, Winter 2015. The study, conducted by Sizmek Research, analyzed data from more than 240 billion impressions in 2014 to identify trends and define an ad performance metric. The research drew a similar conclusion to IAB’s “State of Viewability Transaction in 2015,” which recommends using a 70 percent threshold of impressions across the campaign to meet viewability standards. “We encourage ongoing empirical work around viewability, especially as defined by the MRC,” IAB Senior Vice President, Research, Analytics, and Measurement Sherrill Mane said. Other highlights include:
– Viewable rates increase as advertisers adopt more interactive formats
– HTML5 improved viewable rates more than Flash
– Mobile-specific-sized creative was more viewable than desktop-sized creative for both publisher direct and DSPs/exchanges
– Ads served direct to publishers increased viewability over ads served via programmatic
