TODAY’S TOP NEWS

DreamWorks Animation Television has its first marketing chief. Brenda Freeman joins the studio as head of television marketing, after most recently serving as chief marketing officer at Turner Animation and Cartoon Network. She’ll spearhead global marketing efforts for DreamWorks’ TV business, which includes more than 1,100 episodes of original programming based primarily on the DWA film brands and titles from its wholly owned Classic Media library. DWA has large-scale content deals with Netflix’s streaming service as well as international nets Super RTL in Germany and Planeta Junior in Italy, Spain and the Mediterranean. Prior to her stint at Turner, Freeman served as SVP of integrated marketing and promotions for the Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group. "Brenda’s vast experience in the branding, marketing and distribution of family and kids programming will be invaluable as we continue to grow our television division," said DreamWorks Animation chief marketing officer Dawn Taubin.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Production is underway on Shutterbugs, an animated preschool series from Canada’s Big Jump Productions, Amberwood Entertainment and Tricon Kids & Family. The series, which offers young viewers an opportunity to understand their world through comedy, exploration and reasoning skills, is being developed in association with TVO, Ontario’s public educational media organization.

The Jim Henson Co.’s third-party licensing unit, HIP (Henson Independent Properties) is bringing the first eps of CGI-animated series Elias: Rescue Team Adventures to this year’s MIPTV. This show, produced by Norway’s Animando in partnership with the Iceland’s Coaz Animation, is a follow-up to the original International Emmy-nominated series that first gained popularity as a children’s picture book by Alf Knutsen and Sigurd Slattebrekk. HIP represents the media distribution rights to the new series together with global consumer products rights under a deal announced in 2013. More than 300 consumer products have been introduced in the Nordic region with retail sales of $70 million. 

In other Henson news, the company is co-producing Doozers with DHX Media, inspired by the characters from classic Henson series Fraggle Rock. The first episodes began airing on Turner Broadcasting’s Cartoonito in the U.K., Boomerang in Germany, Boing in Italy, Discovery Kids Latin America, Cartoon Network Asia and Nick Jr. Australia.

Nothing says spring like an egg hunt. Through April 26, cherished character Babar and Manhattan’s Hotel Plaza Athenee are partnering to present The Faberge Big Egg Hunt, a fundraising initiative for Elephant Family and Studio in a School. The hunt involves 250 30-inch egg sculptures by renowned artists and designers placed around NY. In addition, this Saturday and again on April 12 from 3-5p, the Hotel will hold a special "Tea Time with Babar" presented in partnership with Nelvana Enterprises and The Clifford Ross Co.

Veria Living Studios is rolling out Yogapalooza, set to debut at MIPTV. The series stars and is hosted by performer, songwriter and yoga teacher Bari Koral who inspires the grade-school set to get moving through simple and playful yoga moves. Distribution veteran Andrew Berman is handling worldwide sales of the title.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Cartoon Network Enterprises is launching a gem of an online promo for Steven Universe. Together with website WeLoveFine.com, the network debuted the first-ever Steven Universe design contest where fans can submit unique designs inspired by the series for a chance to win one of five prizes–and have their work printed on merchandise. Submissions will be accepted through April 29, and fans rate the designs May 6-June 3 with the winners announced in August. One grand prize winner will receive up to $2,000. Three others, hand-picked by series creator Rebecca Sugar, supervising director Ian Jones-Quartey and background artist/real-life inspiration for the series’ main character Steven Sugar-will take home $300. In addition to the fan-created designs, Steven Universe licensed apparel will debut exclusively at Hot Topic retailers later this month.

Digital storybook site EZTales.com is inviting all kids ages 5-12 to submit an original nursery rhyme for its free writing contest. Elementary school classrooms and library reading groups are also eligible. Four winners will have their stories produced as professional animated interactive books. "In many cases, nursery rhymes are a child’s first introduction to the written and spoken word," said Richard Eaves, co-founder of EZTales.com. "So we thought, why not challenge them to use their imagination and write their very own?"

INTERNATIONAL

Matt Hatter Chronicles is powering into Asia with Platinum Films’ new three-season deal with Cartoon Network for India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and other markets, and a new range of merchandise on the way from global toy company the Simba Dickie Group. The Indian toy launch will be further bolstered by Platinum’s recent appointment of Dream Theatre to execute a multi-category licensing program and cross-media retail campaign.

Jim Henson’s HIP licensing label is exclusive worldwide distributor for Northern Irish independent production company Sixteen South’s new mixed media preschool series Driftwood Bay. About a girl who creates an imaginary world from treasures she finds washed up on the beach, the show will have its world debut on Nick Jr. in the U.K. in May.

Disney Junior has some celebrating to do this week. In its first year as a Nielsen-rated network, beginning in April 2013, the channel this past week scored 52 consecutive weeks as No. 1 in against similarly targeted networks in Total Viewers, K2-5 and Boys 2-5. The channel launched in March 2012 and began publicly reporting ratings in April 2013. It is available in 76 million U.S. households. The network launched in March 2012; it is now available in 76 million homes.

The 27th annual Kids’ Choice Awards skyrocketed Nickelodeon to the top of the ratings heap for the week. The awards show also topped the Nielsen Twitter TV RatingsWeekly Top Ten Series and Specials list, with 2.1 million event-related tweets seen by a unique audience of 6.8 million people. Slime on!
