Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 1, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

A fresh batch of family-friendly content is headed to the pipeline from a new studio writer/producer Dan Angel (R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour, Goosebumps) and TV industry vet Tom Mazza just formed with Larrikin Entertainment. EveryWhere Studios will develop cross-platform programming geared to gathering mom, dad and kids around the TV and the tablet. Angel is serving as chief creative officer, while Mazza, who was most recently co-head of Shaftesbury U.S., is CEO. “There are not enough co-viewing options in the current marketplace for those looking for family entertainment. We see opportunities for families to be able to have programming that’s more 8 o’clock than 10 o’clock,” Mazza tells CynKids, noting broadcast, cable and digital distributors “are going to need more of this kind of content.” Says Angel, “Live-action scripted, movies, animation–for both primetime and the 6-12p range” are all under consideration. The one kids area the team won’t be focusing on is preschool. Based in LA, EveryWhere’s management ranks also include VP of development Lori Nelson, formerly of The Hatchery. The studio’s first production and distribution deal is currently in development and will be announced in the coming weeks.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

What would April Fool’s Day be without a few pranks? Cartoon Network programmers hand-picked special episodes of Johnny Test, The Amazing World of Gumball, Adventure Time and Regular Show, beginning at 2p and geared to bring out the jester in all viewers–all leading up to a new ep of Uncle Grandpa titled, fittingly, “Prank Wars!”

PRODUCTION NOTES

The fifth season of Hub Network’s Family Game Night is getting a star-studded makeover. Celebrities and their families will be invited to show off their gaming skills in addition to families picked from the audience as they play classic Hasbro games and compete for their charity of choice. Created by Hasbro Studios, Family Game Night heads back into production in June with an airdate slated for summer 2014. Games this go-round include Jenga, Barrel of Monkeys, Monopoly Remix, Yahtzee, Battleship, Connect 4 Basketball, Simon Flash, Operation, Sorry! And Bop It! Boptagon.

Jeff Corwin fans will get another opportunity to see the naturist at work. The host Saturday morning docu series Ocean Mysteries with Jeff Corwin, currently airing on ABC, has been tapped to narrate the new 3D IMAX documentary Galapagos 3D: Nature’s Wonderland, written by David Attenborough.

MORE KIDS NEWS

Another reason to take the kids to the mall. Fuhu and DreamWorks Animation are creating experiential learning destinations to be situated in Simon Malls around the country. Called “Do-seums,” the interactive exhibits will leverage technology to engage children and families to connect purposeful play and learning through multi-sensory, educational and entertaining experiences. Uniquely built for each space, the Do-seums will feature familiar DreamWorks characters, and no doubt a nabi tablet or two. Plans are in the works, but ideas include roaming among dinosaurs and scaling a volcano before it erupts, and interacting with a digital world map.

Grab those wizard capes and hatsit’s a party. J.K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be the subject of three films. Warner Bros. announced plans to release a trilogy of films based on the Harry Potter spinoff; Rowling is writing all screenplays herself.

Sesame Street muppet Abby Cadabby and H. Melvin Ming, president/CEO of Sesame Workshop, are joining with the co-founders of Autism Speaks to light the Empire State Building blue tomorrow in honor of World Autism Day. The switch-flipping is part of Austim Speaks’ fifth annual Light It Up Blue global campaign to raise awareness of autism. And there’s more, Sesame Workshop and Autism Speaks are developing a new community engagement initiative to help reduce the stigma surrounding children with autism.

Is it possible for Hugh Jackman to be any more awesome? The actor, who returns to the big screen May 23 in X-Men: Days of Future Past, took to the BBC radio waves last weekend and spoofed his alter-ego with a two-minute sendup of his Les Mis heart-wrencher “Who Am I?” with lyrics changed to fit his Wolverine alter-ego.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Free movies and TV shows for kids are now available from PopcornflixKids, an ad-supported streaming movie platform available on the web and Roku as well as iOS and Android devices. The sister site to PopcornFlix offers up family-friendly shows that range from musicals and animated to programs solely in Spanish.

GAMES & APPS

My Cat Pip is scampering its way into the apps world. Daredevil Development’s design company Over the Moon Design and licensor JELC are launching the first iOS game app based on the cheeky little feline created by author Karen Bendy. The app targets kids aged 3 and up; the partnership was brokered by digital agency Peahen Games.

Babies are now on board the Peppa Pig wagon. Entertainment One Licensing formed a three-year partnership with Rainbow Designs that marks the feisty swine’s entrance into the nursery sector. Rainbow Designs will produce a range of branded products for infants including rattles and teethers, blankets, baby gyms and play mats, available beginning in spring 2015.

Bulldog Licensing hopes to score by bringing iconic football publication Shoot into the toy sector. Founded in 1969, Shoot provided football fans with incisive writing and contributions from the stars of the game, before moving into the digital era by becoming the first football magazine to be made available around the world on the web. Merchandise including a tips and tricks book, complete with training cones, balls and other football equipment, are in the works.

INTERNATIONAL

France Televisions sweetened its programming roster by picking up CAKE‘s animated preschool series Space Racers. Its France 5 will begin airing the show June 1. Other new international deals for the show include Tiji in Russia, which will premiere the series on April 12, the “Day of Cosmonautics,” marking the anniversary of the first manned space flight in 1961 in the U.S.S.R.

Aussie singer and actor Jason Donovan will voice the character of Pops, the patriarch of title character Boj the Bilby, a rare marsupial from the Australian Outback, in CBeebies‘ new animated series Boj. In the series, Boj and his musical parents burrow to the upscale Giggly Park, where they live in their simple, ramshackle underground burrow at the heart of their new neighborhood. The series produced by BAFTA-winning Pesky Productions, and slated to air on CBeebies in late spring.
