04/28/21: Turner Sports cemented a seven-year deal with the NHL

Turner Sports and the NHL made their deal official, formally announcing a seven-year agreement that will bring the next piece of the NHL to WarnerMedia beginning with the 2021-22 season, with the deal including the Stanley Cup Final as well as the Stanley Cup Playoffs to TNT and TBS for the first time, with Turner Sports landing rights to up to 72 regular season games as well as the NHL Winter Classic each season.

The multi-year agreement is highlighted by TNT crowning a champion through its exclusive live coverage of the Stanley Cup Final in three of the seven years; while carrying half of the Stanley Cup Playoffs each year (half of the Conference Finals, First and Second Round games); and rights to up to 72 exclusive national regular season games each season. The multimedia agreement includes live streaming and digital rights across WarnerMedia – including HBO Max – and a wide spectrum of screens and platforms such as mobile, web, tablets and connected devices.

PROGRAMMING

NBC Sports delivers the 147th Kentucky Derby on Saturday at 2:30p on NBC live from Churchill Downs in Louisville. NBC Sports kicks off more than 13 hours of Kentucky Derby Week action stating Friday with live coverage of the Kentucky Oaks beginning at noon on NBCSN. Coverage of the Kentucky Derby features host Mike Tirico, analysts Jerry Bailey, the Hall of Fame jockey and two-time Kentucky Derby winner, and Randy Moss; handicapper/reporter Eddie Olczyk; host/reporter Ahmed Fareed; reporters Britney Eurton, Donna Brothers, Kenny Rice, and Laffit Pincay III; and race caller Larry Collmus.

On the ratings front, FOX Sports reports that its coverage of the GEICO 500 from Talladega drummed up an average of over 4.7 million viewers, up 4% over 2019. That marks the second straight week of viewership upticks for its NASCAR coverage, according to Nielsen.

Meanwhile, through four games, ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball is averaging 1,709,000 viewers, up 38% over the 2020 season average and up 7% from the 2019 season average, according to Nielsen. The April 25 edition of Sunday Night Baseball, featuring a thrilling game between Dodgers and the Padres, generated 2,010,000 viewers across ESPN and ESPN2, up 63% from the 2020 season average and up 26% from the 2019 season average.

Speaking of baseball, MLB Network announced that former MLB All-Star Yonder Alonso has joined its roster of on-air personalities as an analyst appearing across its programming. Alonso will make his debut as a guest co-host on MLB Network’s Intentional Talk on Friday at 5p, alongside Stephen Nelson.

DraftKings completed a “first-of-its-kind” content distribution, monetization and sponsorship agreement with Meadowlark Media. As part of the deal, Meadowlark Media and DraftKings will distribute The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz and the Le Batard & Friends Network across a wide range of audio, TV, digital and social channels. Additionally, the network of shows will prominently feature DraftKings’ odds, betting trends and general sportsbook and daily fantasy information. “We’re thrilled to find a collaborator in DraftKings that shares our vision to grow Dan Le Batard’s already wildly popular network of shows in non-conventional ways,” said Meadowlark CEO John Skipper. “With the freedom to widely distribute these programs, we’ll be able to reach the largest possible audience and provide incredible content to DraftKings.”

FOX Sports takes on this week’s NFL Draft with a viewing experience on Thursday that will see Trey Wingo and analysts Jordan Palmer, T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Geoff Schwartz, RJ Young and Jason McIntyre host the FOX Sports Draft Watch Party. The live interactive experience begins at 7:30p and can be viewed across the network’s digital and social platforms. The lineup of voices offers position-by-position breakdowns and looks at how the first-round picks impact the upcoming NFL season.

Meanwhile, SiriusXM’s NFL Draft coverage will offer live announcements of every selection from every round and in-depth analysis on the SiriusXM NFL Radio channel, as well as additional NFL Draft-focused programming on SiriusXM’s college sports and fantasy sports channels. SiriusXM NFL Radio’s NFL Draft broadcast team will feature Pro Football Hall of Fame member and legendary player personnel executive Gil Brandt; former NFL scout, coach and front-office executive Pat Kirwan; former veteran NFL quarterback Jim Miller; former veteran coach Rick Neuheisel; and lead host Jason Horowitz.

Combate Global and Univision announced “Combate Latina,” a night of all-women’s Mixed Martial Arts action, on Friday, live on Univision and TUDN USA at 12:30a. “Our women athletes over-deliver,” said Combate Global CEO Campbell McLaren. “We have one of the best rosters of women fighters in the world, so establishing a ‘Combate Latina’ franchise is a great addition to our business. Triller Fight Club filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court of Central California with regard to “widespread piracy” that impacted their April 17 Triller Fight Club Pay Per View event that was held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. The lawsuit seeks $100 million in damages noting that there were more than two million illegal streams.

Reddit and the NBA announced their first content and ad sales partnership, starting today. The partnership will see unique NBA content featured on Reddit, including a series of NBA AMAs Ask Me Anything sessions on the platform in partnership with NBA and Reddit. As Reddit and the NBA announce an additional line-up of NBA stars for the AMA series in the coming months, the partnership will also showcase custom game action highlights and NBA and WNBA content on Reddit for the first time.

PokerGO announced their partnership with Global Poker Index (GPI) and The Hendon Mob (THM) to present the Global Poker Awards through 2024. The Global Poker Awards are held from inside the PokerGO Studio at the ARIA Resort & Casino. The awards bring together notable poker players, poker media and poker industry pioneers for a night of celebrating excellence within the sport.

The NBA 2K League revealed its 2021 regular-season schedule and season-long competition structure. The 16-week season will begin May 19 with THE TIPOFF Powered by AT&T, and will conclude Sept. 4 with the 2021 NBA 2K League Finals Delivered by DoorDash. The 23 teams will play 28 regular-season games each. For the first time, the NBA 2K League will be aligned into two conferences: the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Also new this year, the field for the 2021 NBA 2K League Playoffs Delivered by DoorDash has expanded to 12 teams, starting Aug. 26. The 2021 season will once again include three in-season tournaments (THE TIPOFF, THE TURN and THE TICKET) as part of THE BANNER CHAIN powered by AT&T. Regular-season games will begin at 7pon Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with four distinct matchups each night featuring nightly themes: NBA 2KL Block Party Wednesdays; NBA 2KL Bounce Pass Thursdays; NBA 2KL Friday Night Fire; and NBA 2KL Saturday Night Showdown.

Fandom’s Futhead, a FIFA fan community and FIFA Ultimate Team Database, partnered with Goal to co-produce Tuesday Night Football, an online FIFA tournament in which 16 professional FIFA players compete weekly. Tuesday Night Football from Futhead and Goal launched this week and will continue as a regular Tuesday night fixture, with tournaments planned in Europe, North America and South America.

FaZe Clan welcomed NFL star and Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray as its newest official member. Kyler Murray will be known by the team as FaZe K1. Additionally, Kyler is in the process of investing in FaZe Clan and once that is finalized, the terms of the investment will not be disclosed. Gen.G and Conoco announced plans to host a first-of-its-kind college esports rivalry week between University of Colorado and University of Montana esports programs. This marks Conoco’s first-ever activation in the esports space. Rivalry Week presented by Conoco will serve as a two-day event pinning the Buffaloes and Grizzlies against each other in Rocket League on April 27 and Minecraft on April 29. As part of Conoco’s first foray into esports, the hybrid vehicle-soccer game Rocket League will have natural tie-ins to Conoco, and the Minecraft competition will challenge gamers to build a replica Conoco® station featuring famous state landmarks.
