IN THE NEWS
Over 7% of US households took out a new SVOD subscription in the first quarter of 2021, with subs reaching 241 million, according to Kantar data. HBO Max was the leader in new US subscribers (excluding free services and including bundles) with 14.4%, followed by 13.2% for Amazon Prime Video, 11.8% for Paramount+, 11.6% for Disney+, 10.6% for Hulu, 8.5% for Netflix, 7.7% for discovery+, 5.6% for Apple TV+ and 4.7% for Peacock. Peacock Free and Tubi led in AVOD increases. The growth of discovery+ was “impressive,” noted the report, given its narrower focus, while Paramount+ added subs as it successfully rebranded from CBS All Access.
Considerable precautions are being taken to keep participants in the Academy Awards Show safe, assured Oscars show producers Jesse Collins, Stacey Sher, and Steven Soderbergh on Saturday. Strict Covid-19 protocols will be integrated into the April 25 three-hour ceremony – and it doesn’t hurt that Soderbergh and Sher produced the 2011 film “Contagion.” “We are really lucky that we got to make this film together 10 years ago…and got to know some of the leading epidemiologists in the world,” said Sher. “They have been involved, and advising us.”
Going to pot: Companies in the cannabis industry have spent $32.7 million in ad space across print, digital and national TV so far 2021, according to MediaRadar. That’s up 118% from 1Q20. The largest increase in spend was in TV, where 2021 saw an increase of over 2000% YoY, from $111,000 in 2020 to $3.1 million in 2021.
The Writers Guild of America reached a settlement with CBS over residuals for 62 shows added to CBS All Access (now rebranded to Paramount+). The network will pay $3.4 million, an amount “that not only appropriately values the license fees for the programming you’ve written, but also included interest for the late payment,” the WGA told members.
Netflix anime series “Castlevania,” based on a video game, will end with season four, but it’s not the end of the world – the streamer is looking at launching a new series set in the same universe. The new season premieres Thursday, May 13.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill requiring internet providers to cap fees to low-income families for broadband access at $15/month. “You need a broadband service if you are going to be able to get an education, to access government services, to contact your family,” said Cuomo.
Fox Sports commentator Joe Buck will reportedly take a swing at guest hosting “Jeopardy!” this summer. A petition has also been gaining traction calling for “Reading Rainbow” host LeVar Burton to permanently fill the void left by the late, great Alex Trebek.
“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” actor Dominic Purcell changed his tune on Saturday, after posting that he was leaving the show after upcoming season six and “the studio does not care.” Later in the day, he wrote, “Do I have a beef with the studio at @warnerbrostv NO! Yes, I said they don’t care. That’s not correct of course they do.” Purcell also said he would recur on season seven of the CW superhero drama; season six launches Sunday, May 2.
The Africa Channel is now available to Xfinity TV customers in 60 new markets, and also via the Xfinity Stream app. “We feel that showcasing diverse content through the prism of contemporary Africa plays a seminal role in building cultural bridges, while connecting Black Americans to their heritage,” said Narendra Reddy, EVP and General Manager of TAC. “We are particularly excited to partner with Comcast in their commitment to diversity through their Black Experience on Xfinity initiative.”
And the winners were…TV winners at the American Cinema Editors’ 71st Annual ACE Eddie Awards included editors of episodes of “Ozak,” “Better Call Saul,” “Ted Lasso,” “Schitts Creek,” “Rick and Morty,” “Cheer,” and “The Queen’s Gambit.” Among the winners in television categories at the Casting Society of America’s 36th Annual Artios Awards last week were casting directors for “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Succession,” “Normal People,” “A Black Lady Sketch Show.,” “Big Mouth,” and “Queer Eye.”

Black Public Media awarded its highest-ever total funding amount, $410,000, to five projects that participated in its fourth 60 Incubator+. The winning creatives pitched their projects at BPM’s PitchBLACK distributors in public and commercial television and other major funders and were announced at the PitchBLACK Awards on Friday. Honored with the BPM Trailblazer Award was documentary filmmaker Marco Williams, who is working with Stanley Nelson on a film on the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 premiering next month on the History Channel to coincide with the centennial of that national tragedy.
