04/19/21: The Rams discuss their move to carbon neutrality

The quest for carbon neutrality is getting another champion with the announcement that the Los Angeles Rams would be committing to sustainability to offset their own carbon emissions from the team’s air travel to away games. Done in partnership with Castrol, the move marks the first team in the NFL to launch this initiative which is supplemented by an additional pledge to leave every city they visit better than when they arrived through a waste-cleanup partnership with Keep America Beautiful. Cynopsis Sports asked Lexi vonderLieth, Rams VP of Partnership Marketing, about the move.

vonderLieth on launching the program: The process starts immediately by discussing shared values and goals. Programs like this come to life when a partner like Castrol is just as committed as we are to learning to improve habits that will positively impact the environment in our community and the ones we visit.

On forging a partnership with Castrol: The Rams made a commitment to sustainability through the development of SoFi Stadium and Hollywood Park, which features advanced sustainability elements, such as the use of reclaimed water for landscape irrigation, maintenance and aesthetic purposes, as well as developing more than 20-acres of parkland.

As we further that commitment, we look to our partners to uncover new and different ways to make a difference both in our backyard and beyond. That’s when we got together with Castrol and said, “What can we do?” As the official sustainability partner of the NFL, Castrol pushed us to take additional steps to further reduce our environmental impact through a series of new initiatives. While this started as something surrounding our newly developed stadium, we’re happy to see it expand into a full-fledged program for the 2021 season.

On plans: As part of the commitment, we’re pledging to leave every city we visit during the 2021 season better than when we arrived. For example, we pledged to clean up waste in every city we visit on our away schedule this season through a partnership with Keep America Beautiful. With the help of Castrol, we’re also offsetting carbon emissions from our team’s air travel to all away games in the 2021 season – an NFL first.

On impacting business: Change isn’t easy, but it’s important to recognize that even the small changes we make can have a positive impact beyond our immediate reach. We know that we have a platform to make a positive impact and drive change, whether it be through our local community cleanups, offsetting our travel or educating fans about how they can make changes. It’s important to be leaders and with Castrol we have the opportunity to make a difference and get others on board at the same time.

It’s a team effort and the only way a difference can be made is if we work together. We understand the responsibility we have for our community and that any small changes can help make an impact. PROGRAMMING

Formula 1 is returning to Florida, announcing Sunday that the debut of a new Miami Grand Prix starting in 2022. The race would mark the first in Florida since 1959 and will take place on a new layout at the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens. According to Formula 1, the circuit will be 5.41km, and feature 19 corners, three straights and potential for three DRS zones, with an estimated top speed of 320km/h.

Invicta Fighting Championships was acquired by Anthem Sports & Entertainment which will line up a “wide variety” of Invicta events, including world championship fight nights, the Phoenix Series© tournaments, tentpole pay-per-view events plus behind the scenes shoulder programming, according to the announcement. Founder Shannon Knapp will join Anthem’s executive team as a senior member of the Sports Media Group, and will continue to spearhead Invicta FC as it moves. “This is a huge moment for Invicta and for women in the sport,” she said. “Invicta FC was founded to give female mixed martial artists a platform where they could compete and prove the doubters wrong. Now, as part of the Anthem portfolio and with shows on national television for the first time, Invicta’s platform will be bigger than ever, and more people will have the opportunity to see the world’s elite female athletes compete. With Anthem’s backing, it’s going to be easier than ever for our fans to catch all the Invicta action and for new fans to find out exactly why Invicta is one of the world’s most exciting fight promotions.”

Fifteen of Europe’s biggest clubs are in discussions to launch a European Super League, according to ESPN. The mega org would look to start in time for the 2023-24 season, with a $6 billion fund backing the project. The report stated that if the initiative is successful, it would threaten the existence of the Champions League with UEFA set to announce on Monday a new 36-team format for the tournament designed to “stave off attempts by the game’s top clubs to break away.” English top-flight clubs Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are among 11 European teams to have signed up to the Super League plan. Permanent members will include six Premier League clubs, three from La Liga, three from Italy’s Serie A, two from the Bundesliga and one from France’s Ligue 1. Sources told ESPN that JP Morgan will underwrite the project, with $6 billion distributed as loans to the teams.

The WTA has released an extended 2021 WTA Tour calendar outlining the next phase of tournaments this season following Wimbledon through the US Open. The latest release lays out the next nine weeks which includes a number of changes to city locations. while the 2021 edition of tournaments in Cologne and ‘s-Hertogenbosch will unfortunately not operate this year but return in 2022. Steve Simon, WTA Chairman and CEO, stated, “We are excited to announce the next series of events on the 2021 Tour calendar, as this season has already proven to be outstanding with the level of tennis we have witnessed thus far. We are especially appreciative of the commitment in which all the tournaments and players have put forth in order to operate efficiently and safely during these challenging times.”

The field of 16 teams competing for the 2020 NCAA Division I Football Championship was revealed today by the NCAA Division I Football Championship Committee with top seeds South Dakota State, Sam Houston, James Madison, and Jacksonville State. The 2020 championship field consists of 10 automatic qualifiers and six at-large qualifiers. Team pairings are determined primarily according to geographical proximity. All rounds of the FCS playoffs can be seen on ESPN’s family of networks with first-round games taking place Saturday and concluding with the national championship game at Toyota Stadium in Frisco on May 16 at 2p on ABC.

Hileman Cowley Partners announced the sale of Comcast Esports Studios to Nuveen. Lakeland University, a private liberal arts university located in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, became an Official Partner of Bucks Gaming for the 2021 NBA 2K League season.
