03/25/14: Disney Buys Maker for $500 Million

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, March 25, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

It’s now been confirmed that The Walt Disney Company is acquiring Maker Studios, the top YouTube multi-channel network, for $500 million. After the deal was announced, Disney shares rose .3% in after hours trading to $79.75/share, according to Variety. Warner Bros. recently led an $18 million investment in another YT MCN, Machinima.

Apple and Comcast are talking about a possible streaming-TV service. According  to the Wall Street Journal, the new set-top-box would blend live TV with apps, web video and a focus on gaming. The OTT box would replace a cable box; Apple is hoping to allow people to watch programming on-demand, but would have to acquire TV rights on its own, the report said. Apple has been working to release an updated version of its Apple TV box ($99), which currently offers apps like HBO Go, Netflix and Hulu. Meanwhile, Amazon is expected to release a streaming-stick much like the Google Chromecast design in April…

As the Apple and Comcast details emerged yesterday, Netflix‘s shares dropped more than nine percent ($369.02 a share) since the proposed OTT box would stream live and on-demand TV over Comcast’s broadband network to ensure video quality, in the wake of Netflix signing a deal with Comcast to pay for better streaming for customers just last month. Apple’s shares rose one percent to $538.25 a share, and Comcast’s stocks dipped 0.3 percent to $49.84 per share.

The NCAA and T3 Media are partnering up for a new YouTube channel called NCAA Vault, which will feature more than 300 NCAA Men’s Basketball games from 1976 to 2011. Videos will range from memorable highlights, current stars and the ability to search games from specific years and teams.

ADVERTISING

Pinterest plans to recreate web advertising with new "artful" ad sales launching in the second quarter, according to the Wall Street Journal. The picture "pinning" site is hoping the ads, called promoted pins, will be posted to users’ personal pages just like regular pins, with a similar design and format. Four Seasons and TRESemme have already launched on the promoted pin platform, and reported they were "pleased with the results." A recent promoted Four Seasons pin test was repined more than 9,000 times, and received 500 requests for the brochure.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Twitter, FOX and Advertising Research Foundation released a study showing 92 percent of 12,577 Twitter users turned on the TV or searched for a program after seeing a related tweet. The findings include:

  • 76 percent have searched a show after viewing a related tweet
  • 78 percent have engaged with a tweet about a TV show
  • 77 percent have watched TV content after reading a related tweet
  • 54 percent of those surveyed interacted with a brand after reading a related tweet

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Major League Gaming (MLG) launched its first Xbox app yesterday for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, and is currently working to release the Xbox One app later this year. The app will distribute its MLG.tv content highlighting video gaming news, including coverage of the MLG Championship live broadcast from June 20-22 in Anaheim, California.
