iontelevision.com .The Weather Channel‘s AMHQ with Sam Champion debuts today at 7a, with live reporting from St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in NYC, Savannah, GA, Hot Springs AR ("home of the world’s shortest St. Patty’s Day parade") and Chicago. "It is not a coincidence that AMHQ launches on St Patrick’s Day," said Champion. "It’s a holiday known for outdoor celebrations across the country, the type of weather-dependent events that AMHQ plans to cover live every week."
Viacom‘s making a real event of the live season three premiere of TV Land‘s The Soul Man, to be simulcast on sister nets BET and Centric. Centric will then run eps of Soul Man on Saturdays, a week and a half after they air on TV Land. Triple premiere is Wednesday, March 26 at 10:30p, after TV Land’s live season premiere of the comedy from which Soul Man was spun, Hot in Cleveland.
While most issues have been settled as studios and the Writers Guild of America hash out a new contract, options and exclusivity "remain points of contention," reported WGA co-chairs Chip Johannessen and Billy Ray Thursday night. Writers bound to a show with the 10 or 13 episode order common in cable and digital, the co-chairs point out, find themselves on unpaid hold for months at a time. Negotiations resume March 31.
The city of LA is suing Time Warner Cable for almost $10 million in alleged unpaid franchise and Public, Educational, Government (PEG) fees. TWC "enjoys a virtual monopoly," says the complaint, "and it has blatantly refused to live up to its obligations to the City resulting from the grant of that monopoly." Responded the cable company, "We are disappointed the City has chosen to bring this action, which we strongly believe is without merit. It will now be resolved through the legal process."

TNT has a full slate of original series this summer. Sked launches with the season three premiere of Major Crimes at 9p on Monday, June 9, followed by the series premiere of Stephen Bochco‘s Murder in the First. Season five of Rizzoli & Isles starts Tuesday, June 17 at 9p, with season three of Perception bowing at 10p. Friday, June 20, Cold Justice resumes season two at 8p. New series from Michael Bay, The Last Ship, debuts Sunday, June 22 at 9p, followed by season four of Falling Skies at 10p. Dallas returns Monday, August 18 at 9p to finish its season three, and two days later comes the debut of new drama Legends at 9p, followed by the fourth season premiere of Franklin & Bash at 10p.
Nat Geo Wild announced two summer specials. Kingdom of the Apes explores the personality and culture of chimpanzees, with an introduction from renowned primatologist Jane Goodall; the two-hour documentary from National Geographic Television premieres globally in July 2014. Giant Pandas, from Oxford Scientific Films Production, follows a panda bred in captivity that is released into the wild, premiering in August 2014 in the U.S. and globally in September.
Oxygen is premiering two new series on Tuesday, March 18. Reality show Chasing Maria Menounos at 10p is "an authentic look into my life with my boyfriend Keven and my parents," exec producer/TV personality Menounos tells Cynopsis. "I can’t wait to share my family with the viewers." At 10:30p comes Celebrities Undercover. "After transforming celebrities head to toe, we give them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to find out what their friends, family and fans truly think about them," T. Group Productions exec producer Jenny Daly tells Cynopsis.
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is launching her own digital video channel, reports Capital New York. Rogue TV (wt) will be available through Tapp, for $10/month. Palin is a contributor to Fox News Channel, and hosts Sportsman Channel‘s Amazing America.
Eric Church, Toby Keith and Lady Antebellum with Stevie Nicks have been added to the slate of performers at the 49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards. Event airs live from Las Vegas on Sunday, April 6 at 8p on CBS.

Thomas Lennon (Sean Saves the World) has been cast as neat freak Felix opposite Matthew Perry‘s Oscar in CBS pilot The Odd Couple. Lennon is an exec producer on Comedy Central‘s @midnight.

Showtime bumped up season three guest star Nazanin Boniadi to season four regular on Homeland. Boniadi is currently in a story arc on ABC‘s Scandal.
Max Casella (The Sopranos) and Jack Quaid (The Hunger Games) have joined HBO‘s unnamed rock drama pilot to play music execs. Martin Scorsese is directing, with Mick Jagger onboard as an exec producer. The starpower shouldn’t faze Quaid – mom and dad are Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid.
Nancy Lenehan (The New Adventures of Old Christine) will play the mother of Tom Papa’s character in CBS pilot More Time with the Family, exec produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and produced by 20th Century Fox Television.
Melissa George (Grey’s Anatomy) landed a role in ABC‘s Richard LaGravanese pilot starring Rufus Sewell, said the Hollywood Reporter.
Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace) will star in the pilot for a CBS terrorism drama, about a former CIA operative yanked back into service.
Shock Top beer launches a national TV ad campaign this week, just in time for the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournament. Anheuser-Busch plans to more than triple spending on the brand in 2014, director-imports, crafts and specialty beers Eli Aguilera, tells AdAge. The campaign includes videos based on submissions from consumers, as part of a contest that had been intended for digital use. "The feedback we got from consumers was stellar so we decided it was a great way to launch our TV advertising," said Aguilera. Agency: Group 360, St. Louis.
This year’s TED Ads Worth Spreading offered kudos for "brand bravery," celebrating spots that "communicate ideas in a powerful way." Based on Nielsen’s Live + 3 Day TV playback data, last Sunday’s debut of ABC‘s Resurrection rose by 3.1 million total viewers, to 17.0 million. Ratings for the A18-49 demo rating spiked from 3.8 to 5.0.
CBS‘s Two and a Half Men scored a 2.4/7 A18-49 rating Thursday, enough to beat the 2.1/6 Fox‘s American Idol posted in the common half-hour.For the second week, Men also beat ABC‘s Grey’s Anatomy (2.3/7) in A18-49 in their common half-hour.
A shift from Thursday to Friday didn’t help Fox‘s Rake, which earned a .5 in and A18-49 demo, according to Nielsen fast nationals, down from .8. ABC‘s Shark Tank and 20/20 topped the night in the demo, each with 1.9.
The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 caused A25-54 ratings bumps for news net CNN. On Thursday, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 drew 454,000 viewers in the news demo, versus 429,000 for Fox News‘ The O’Reilly Factor, according to Nielsen. Erin Burnett Outfront (366,000) scored more viewers than Fox‘s On the Record with Greta van Susteren (290,000) the same night, and Piers Morgan Tonight, about to go off the air due to poor ratings, delivered 452,00 viewers in the demo versus 421,000 for Fox News’ The Kelly File.
Its first two weeks on Thursdays at 10p, Food Network‘s Beat Bobby Flay averaged a .6 P25-54 /650K Impressions, up 40 percent versus a year ago, with an average 1.3 million P2+ viewers
Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 2.5/8, according to Nielsen. CBS took the lead at the 8p hour with a 3.7/13 average for The Big Bang Theory and the Millers, followed by Fox’s Hell’s Kitchen, with 2.0/7. ABC won at 9p with 2.3/7 for Grey’s Anatomy, while a 2.2/6 average for American Idol landed Fox in second. ABC’s Scandal was tops 10p with 2.8/8, versus 1.7/5 for CBS’s Elementary.
