Freeware: Freeware is any proprietary software that is available to use for no monetary cost. It’s generally not possible to modify, reverse-engineer, or re-distribute freeware without the author’s permission.
Hulu’s upcoming live TV service has something in common with YouTube’s: Neither of them will feature MTV, Comedy Central, or any other Viacom networks, at least to start. Hulu’s decision to move forward without a Viacom carriage deal was first reported by Bloomberg. The news comes shortly after the licensing deal between Viacom and Hulu expired, knocking most Viacom content off of Hulu’s existing SVOD service. Hulu’s live TV service is expected to debut in April, priced at less than $40 per month.
Viacom or no, it looks like A+E networks is on-board: Hulu has inked a carriage deal with the company, and it will feature on its upcoming TV service. Other companies already signed up for the service include 21st Century Fox, CBS Corp., Disney, and Turner. Not coincidentally, Fox and Disney/ABC are equity partners in Hulu. Though notably, CBS isn’t, and NBCUniversal – which is – still hasn’t inked a carriage deal with Hulu. Reportedly, those negotiations are ongoing.
Verizon and the digital agency R/GA are launching a new incubator program. Called the Verizon Media Tech Venture Studio, the unit will seek to invest in up to ten early-stage companies focused on areas such content creation, AI, eSports, VR and AR, and interactive advertising. Verizon and R/GA’s venture capital arms will jointly invest up to $100,000 in each company. Both companies say they intend to take 1%-6% stake in the companies they invest in. The program launches on July 31, but startups interested in participating have to submit applications no later than May 30.

Amazon just rolled out a new video ad product. Simply called Amazon Video Ads, the out-stream ad format is now available to advertisers working within the Amazon Media Group. The multi-platform format enables advertisers to run an autoplay feature in videos as Amazon shoppers browse. The ads are automatically muted, but customers can choose to turn sound on and make them full-screen. The ads are designed to meet Interactive Advertising Bureau and Media Rating Council standards; at least 50% of an ad must remain in view for 2 consecutive seconds. And the autoplay feature only begins when an ad is in view, automatically pausing when it’s not.

Facebook’s latest move in its effort to master the live video space: A deal with Major League Soccer. In a new collaboration with the MLS and Univision Deportes, the social media giant will live-stream at least 22 MLS matches in English. Facebook will also add various interactive elements to the broadcasts, including graphics, fan polling and Q&A features, and Facebook-specific commentators. MLS will also produce more than 40 original “Matchday Live” shows, which will feature game highlights, previews of upcoming soccer matches, and discussions from around the league. The Matchday Live features will be posted to the MLS’s Facebook page, while the live-streamed games will be posted to the Univision Deportes page. The first live-streamed game will debut on March 18.
Virtual reality production company MANDT VR has made a new hire. Brian Cavallaro will serve as the company’s Chief Creative Officer. At the same time, he also serves as Director of Development and Vice President of Production for Mandt Bros. Production. Cavallaro is a longtime producer and director, with credits dating back to 2004.
