Good morning. It’s Friday March 3, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Digital Master: A digital master is a file – be it a video recording, PDF, or other digital asset – that’s preserved as the “original” for the purpose of reuse, re-expression, and archive storage.

TOP NEWS

Snap Inc. has got to like what it’s seeing so far. Soon after the Snapchat-parent began trading yesterday in its much-anticipated IPO, its shares leaped 41%, to $24 per share. The company had initially set a price of $17 per share, amounting to a company valuation of about $24 billion. Now, however, its market cap appears to be over $33 billion. The IPO will give co-founders Evan Spiegel and Bobby Murphy about $5 billion worth of stock holdings. On top of that, they’ll maintain control of all shareholder decisions, as the stock they’re offering through the IPO doesn’t carry any voting rights.

ESPORTS

Twitter just landed a ton of eSports content. Thanks to new pacts with ESL and DreamHack, the company says it will live-stream 1,500 hours of competitive gaming events by the end of 2017. The deal covers more than 15 events in the Intel Extreme Masters (IEM), ESL One, and DreamHack eSports circuits. The streams will be available for free worldwide, on the web and via Twitter’s TV apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xbox One, and Android TV. The first event that Twitter will stream is this Saturday’s Intel Extreme Masters Katowice in Poland.

Speakers from brands such as Intel, PepsiCo, Buffalo Wild Wings, Anheuser-Busch and more will be on-hand at the Cynopsis World eSports Summit on 4/12 in Manhattan. Grab your tickets to learn how to monetize eSports and network with the industry’s best.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Sony may have introduced its PlayStation VR headset last year, but Microsoft looks set on one-upping its rival. The next version of the Xbox – codenamed Project Scorpio – will come equipped with both VR and Windows Mixed Reality content starting in 2018, the company said. (Microsoft’s Windows Mixed Reality technology, which situates computer-generated imagery within real-world surroundings, is the same tech that powers the Microsoft’s Hololens augmented reality headset.) Microsoft’s announcement came at the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco.

Believe it or not, they have VR startups in the U.K. too. And one of them, the video producer Parable, just landed some big investors. U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 and Studio Lambert chief exec Stephen Lambert have each taken minority stakes in Parable. Lambert has also been appointed as the company’s Chairman. Parable, which intends to make content for the entertainment, brand marketing, and training sectors, has already completed two 360-degree documentaries for The Economist.

OTT + SVOD

Amazon Channels, Amazon’s video subscription ad-on program for partners like HBO and Showtime, has added a new Indian entertainment channel. Called Heera, the channel features movies and TV shows in Hindi, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil and Bengali. It’ll be available only to U.S. users. Like with other Amazon Channels platforms, Access to Hera requires a $99-per-year Prime subscription.

RESEARCH

[]
To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, attention analytics company iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Here, a look at the brands that advertised during ABC’s broadcast of the 89th Academy Awards.
“And the Oscars’ brand winner was… Walmart! The retailer earned 24.1% digital share of voice during the Oscars, the highest percentage of all online activity prompted by ads during the show. The brand aired four spots during the awards show as part of a campaign called ‘Four Award Winning Directors. Three Unique Films. One Walmart Receipt.’ The arty conceit teased the concept of high-quality narratives built around simple purchases: bananas, batteries, paper towels, wrapping paper, a video baby monitor and a scooter. Rolex, AT&T, The New York Times and Cadillac were the other finalists in the category, rounding out the top five in terms of digital share of voice.” – iSpot.tv

EXECUTIVE NEWS

Mashable has named a new exec to head up programming and development for Mashable Studios, its original content unit. The newly-created position goes to Polly Auritt, who had previously served as VP of Programming at Fullscreen since the summer of 2015. Auritt will now oversee Mashable Studios’ long-form content, which is slated to debut across OTT services, social media, and even TV. Mashable Studios currently has production partnerships in place with Nat Geo Wild, NBCUniversal’s Bravo, and others.

Music video platform Vevo has named Will Jackson to a newly-created role. Serving as SVP of Strategy and Operations, Jackson will be responsible for defining and executing Vevo’s long-term growth strategies. He joins the company from Pandora, where he served as VP of Corporate Strategy & International Development.

The 2013 and 2014 Yahoo data breaches already caused Verizon to shave $350 million off of its acquisition. But it seems there were other shoes left to drop. Ronald S. Bell, Yahoo’s top lawyer, resigned from the company this week. And CEO Marissa Mayer has lost her 2016 bonus. In addition, Mayer will give up her 2017 equity compensation due to the hacks. “I am the CEO of the company and since this incident happened during my tenure, I have agreed to forgo my annual bonus and my annual equity grant this year,” Mayer confirmed in a statement.
