CYNOPSISDIGITAL
03.02.17 Good morning. It’s Thursday March 2, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Video Capture: Video Capture is the process of converting an analog video signal (e.g., one that’s produced by a DVD player or video camera) into a digital video stream.
Looks like Snapchat parent Snap Inc. has already raised a lot of money in its IPO. As first reported by Reuters, Snap has already taken in $3.4 billion in funding. The company will reportedly begin selling its shares for $17 apiece – a company valuation of about $24 billion. The company had been expected to price its shares between $14 and $16, a valuation of about $19 billion – $22 billion. But Snap has reportedly been seeing signs of high demand in recent days, despite the fact that it’s yet to turn a profit, and that its investors won’t be granted voting rights. Snap will start trading on the New York Stock Exchange today, under the symbol SNAP.
Twitter has added some new features in its escalating efforts to police abuse on its platform. The company will now let users filter out notifications from the types of accounts that are often set up specifically to harass people. (For instance, accounts without profile pictures or verified email addresses.) Users will also be able to mute specific keywords on their timelines. They’ll have the option to set time limits on such muting – for instance, they might put it into effect for a week or even a day. Finally, Twitter officially acknowledged that it’s been temporarily restricting the reach of abusive accounts, ensuring that only their own followers can see their tweets. You can check out Twitter’s blog post on the new features here.
The cross-device marketing technology firm Tapad has partnered with clypd, an audience-based sales platform for TV advertising. The deal will expland Tapad’s supply of TV inventory to include premium inventory for national national cable. Marketers will now be able to integrate customer data or third-party digital data segments into Tapad’s platform, for use across clypd’s national cable network inventory.

Facebook has launched its free video-centric app for the fourth gen Apple TV. The app features both on-demand and live-streaming videos. It also lets users watch videos from their friends and from the Facebook Pages they follow. In addition, it offers video recommendations based on users’ interests, and highlights the top live videos that are trending on Facebook at a given moment. Facebook’s video app already launched for Samsung’s Smart TVs earlier this week. Facebook says it’s also developing apps for Amazon Fire TV and other platforms. To start, Facebook videos streamed on the Apple TV and other platforms won’t carry advertising, but that’s certain to change eventually; the eventual goal, after all, is to compete with traditional TV for ad dollars.
Cynopsis hosted a phenomenal Branded Content webinar on Tuesday with superb presentations (and videos) from BEN, Discovery, ESPN, The Weather Channel and Scripps Networks Interactive. If you missed out, get everything on-demand and be in the know.
Talk to experts in the space, and they’ll mostly tell you the same thing: Before VR can truly scale as a consumer medium, prices need to come down. Oculus seems to have gotten the memo. At the Game Developer Conference in San Francisco, the Facebook-owned VR company announced that its Rift headset will now sell bundled with two Touch controllers at a price of $598. Consumers can also buy the Rift alone for $499. And if they already have the Rift headset, they can buy Touch controllers for $99. This may still sound like a lot of money, but consider: The Rift previously sold for $600, and the Touch controllers previously cost an additional $200.
A trend that will surprise precisely no one: According to a report from MoffettNathanson Research, traditional pay TV providers saw steep declines in Q4 of 2016, while OTT-based TV services saw gains. Traditional cable, satellite, and telco distributors saw a 1.7% decline, according to the report. That adds up to 319,000 lost subscribers, with the total number of U.S. subscribers amounting to 96.499 million. Meanwhile, virtual MVPDs like Dish’s Sling TV and AT&T’s DirecTV Now added 500,000 subs in Q4. According to MoffettNathanson, Those services now total 1.411 million subs – 227,000 for DirecTV Now and 1.184 million for Sling TV. “With the results now in from all the largest operators, it is clear cord-cutting of legacy distribution services – that is, without including OTT-delivered virtual MVPD bundles, like Sling TV and DirecTV now (and soon, YouTube TV) – has at least meaningfully accelerated,” wrote Craig Moffett, MoffettNathanson’s senior research analyst.
It’s safe to say that whatever Stott Stuber decides to do next, his future looks pretty rosy. According to Variety, the former Universal Pictures production chief has been talking to Netflix about taking over the streaming giant’s film unit. The post has been open since Pauline Fischer left the company late last year. In addition, Stuber has reportedly spoken with Viacom CEO Bob Bakish about potentially succeeding Brad Grey as CEO of Paramount Pictures. Variety reports that Stuber is said to be more interested in the Netflix job, which would give him more autonomy. Unlike Netflix, the Paramount job might include a greenlight committee consisting of Bakish and others.
Video advertising marketplace Teads has announced a new hire. Marc Zander will join Teads as Global VP of Client Partnerships. Zander will oversee the company’s efforts to work more closely with advertisers. He joins the company from Mars Chocolate, where he served as Global Media Director.
Who provides the voice of recurring character Sarah Lynn on Netflix’s BoJack Horseman? (Hint: One of her other credits is as a voice on Fox’s Bob’s Burgers). (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)
Our Last Trivia Question: When Daredevil – a series about a blind superhero – first premiered on Netflix in 2015, some people expressed disappointment that the series hadn’t come equipped with a certain feature designed to help visually impaired viewers take in the series. Netflix made said feature available to Daredevil viewers shortly thereafter, and has since added it as an option for a ton of other content. What’s the feature in question? Answer: Audio descriptions for visually impaired viewers. And if you think it’s impossible to enjoy a rock ‘em sock ‘em fight scene if you’re blind, just go to Netflix, select the audio description option, and watch Daredevil with your eyes closed. You’ll learn just how wrong you are. Seems like every tech company wants to take up some type of real estate on your mobile phone. Except for Yondr – they want to stop you from using your phone altogether. Doesn’t sound like a recipe for success in 2017, does it? Well, it actually might be. From the Wall Street Journal, learn more here.
