The 2020 Summer Olympics have officially been postponed. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, The IOC president and the Prime Minister of Japan concluded that the Games must be rescheduled “to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community,” said a joint statement by the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee and the IOC. The Games were scheduled to air July 24-August 9 on NBC, home to every Summer Olympics since 1988. NBC Sports said Tuesday, “We have no doubt that the IOC and Tokyo Organizing Committee will put on an exceptional games next year and the Olympic flame will once again unite the world and provide a light at the end of this tunnel.”
Discovery Inc., which has rights to show the Games in Europe, said it “fully supports the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee’s plan to stage the Olympic Games in 2021 and to make every effort to ensure the well-being of spectators, athletes, staff and the international community. Our essential planning and deliverables are complete and will now shift into next year.”
Netflix commissioned Kinetic Content to produce two new seasons of Love Is Blind. The reality series became the streamer’s top show in the US at the end of February, two weeks after launch. Season 2 is currently casting in Chicago.
The season ten ender of The Walking Dead will not air as planned. “Current events have unfortunately made it impossible to complete post-production on The Walking Dead Season 10 finale, so the current season will end with its 15th episode on April 5,” AMC announced on Tuesday. The intended finale is expected to air as a special episode later this year.
Good Morning America host Robin Roberts begins working at home today, due to concerns over her catching the coronavirus given the cancer survivor’s pre-existing conditions. Roberts’ doctor, Gail Roboz, appeared on the show, yesterday, and advised those with underlying medical conditions to take special precautions to protect themselves.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, originally scheduled for May 2, has been pushed to Saturday, November 7. The event is set to be broadcast live on HBO for the first time, from the Public Auditorium in Cleveland.
Genius Brands, with an assist from Warren Buffett and Jennifer Garner, who donated their time and talent, has produced a series of animated PSAs focused on teaching children how to practice handwashing and social distancing. The spot utilize children’s brands from the company’s catalog, including Netflix series Llama, Llama, starring Garner; Amazon Prime series Secret Millionaires Club, co-created by and starring Buffett; and Rainbow Rangers, which airs on Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr.
Estrella Media launched a #SiSePuede community empowerment campaign for the US Hispanic population aimed at inspiring hope and optimism during the pandemic. The campaign will feature Estrella Media talent and recording artists sharing daily tips and positive messages.
DPAA, in collaboration with Madwell ad agency, is launching a “We are the Countervirus” PSA initiative to run on digital out-of-home screens in the US and UK with plans to expand to other European countries, Canada, India and Mexico over the next week or so. The campaign shares information on slowing down the spread of COVID-19.
ViacomCBS and Nexstar Media Group struck a multi-year agreement to renew nine CBS network affiliations for Nexstar stations, reaching approximately 3.5% of the U.S. audience and nearly four million television households. The deal extends CBS/Nexstar affiliations that were set to expire later this year and covers two top-50 market affiliates, WNCN-TV in Raleigh, NC and KLAS-TV in Las Vegas, NVC.
Bob Sellers joined Newsmax TV as anchor of American Agenda, a new weekday news show airing live from New York City. Sellers previously anchored Fox News Live, and was an anchor on CNBC, co-hosting Today’s Business and Market Watch.

Netflix greenlit a new series from Marie Kondo (Tidying Up with Marie Kondo). Sparkling Joy with Marie Kondo hails from Alfred Street Industries, the new production company set up by Magical Elves founders and Project Runway producers Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz, and is executive produced by the duo alongside Kondo, Takumi Kawahara and Dan Volpe. The series will follow the cleaning expert and her team as they set out to tidy up one small town in America.
In other Netflix news, the streamer ordered two more seasons of The Circle and a second season of Rhythm + Flow. The Circle, a Studio Lambert-produced social experiment based on a British format, sees contestants catfish their way to a $100,000 prize. Rhythm + Flow, which features judges Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and Tip “T.I.” Harris, searches for the next hip hop star.
AMC is moving forward with anthology series National Anthem. Created by writer-director Scott Z. Burns and executive produced by Mark Johnson, the musical dramedy is the first project under Johnson’s multi-year overall deal with AMC Studios. National Anthem centers on a middle class, midwestern family tumbling down the ladder of American society, who periodically burst into song. Bone Burnett is attached as the series’ music producer.
Butch Kaplan (The Notebook, Fear the Walking Dead, Devs) will serve as Executive Producer and Showrunner on Nucleus Media Rights’ upcoming drama Heresy. The series, which tells the story of a young woman who fights the Holy Inquisition, is a co-production with Italian producer 3zero2 and stars Rudolf Martin (Ford vs. Ferrari, NCIS). Production is set to begin in late 2020.

AXS TV’s Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar returns on Sunday, April 19 at 8:30p. The show’s fifth season includes six new episodes featuring conversations and jam sessions with Def Leppard, Shaquille O’Neal, Brian May, Joe Walsh, Big & Rich, Ted Nugent and more.
Uncensored is back Sunday, April 26 at 10p on TV One. The docu-series’ third season explores the private lives of actor Larenz Tate, singer/actor Tyrese, rapper Eve, producer Yandy Smith-Harris and actor Omar Hadwick.
MotorTrend brings Hot Wheels to life in original short-form series Life Size, streaming now on the MotorTrend App. Professional race car driver and builder Nicole Lyons explores the real-world, full-scale versions of vehicles from the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends, an elite collection of Hot Wheels cars, not only detailing the unique designs but taking the life size version for a test drive.
Another chilling season of Deadly Cults premieres on Oxygen on Sunday, April 26 at 7p. The series, which recounts homicide cases where cult leaders swayed followers within the group to kill, moves to its regular timeslot of 8p on Sunday, May 10.

Animal Planet bows Croc Hunter Irwin Week on Monday, March 23 at 6a and Monday Night Puppy Bowl on Monday, March 30 at 6a, while Science Channel debuts How It’s Made Mega Marathon on Friday, March 27 at 6a.
The 2020 TCM Classic Film Festival has set a “Special Home Edition” from April 16 to 19 – the same dates the festival was slated to run – with featuring movies and moments from the past decade, that viewers can enjoy at home. Programming highlights include A Star Is Born (1954) and Singing in the Rain (1952).
STREAMING SNIPPETS
YouTube will temporarily serve video in lower quality standard-definition format across the globe as it looks to reduce strain on internet networks during the coronavirus pandemic. The streamer switched to SD in the European Union, as well as the UK and Switzerland, last week. YouTube users can override the setting and still watch content in HD formats if available. But by delivering lower bit rates with SD as the default, the streamer and parent company Google are hoping to reduce congestion on networks.
Pluto TV announced the launch of a special One Day at a Time pop-up channel, celebrating the classic Norman Lear sitcom. The new 24/7 streaming channel debuted last night at 10p, following the new season debut on Pop TV.
With the season 1 finale of Star Trek: Picard set for Thursday, March 26, series star Patrick Stewart offered fans stuck at home during the COVID-19 outbreak a gift: a free month of CBS All Access. Stewart announced the offer via social media on Tuesday.
Customers phoning Netflix for help won’t be getting an answer. The company is currently providing only live chat and online support, citing the rise in support requests and the fact the customer-service agents are working from home. According to the streamer, by shifting to chat instead of phone support, agents are able to help more people while working remotely. Netflix is also reducing support hours, which will vary by country.
NBCUniversal has signed on to supply content to Eros Now Prime, the new-English-language streaming service launching from Eros Now in South Asia. Eros Now Prime will be available on all existing Eros Now platforms, and is scheduled to launch in June 2020. The company’s multi-year deal with NBCU is being labeled as “only the first step in” in Eros Now Prime’s journey.
TECH TALK
Amazon Music, Facebook, SiriusXM-Pandora, Spotify, Tidal and YouTube Music are contributing to the COVID-19 Relief Fund announced last week by the Recording Academy’s charitable foundation MusiCares, which supports music industry workers in need. Since the fund’s establishment, MusiCares and the Recording Academy have raised millions more than the initial $2 million to start the fund, thanks to its partners.
Twitter announced it would be donating $1 million equally between two organizations, The Committee to Protect Journalists and the International Women’s Media Foundation, to further their work specifically related to supporting reporting on COVID-19.
GOING GLOBAL
Disney+ officially launched in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Switzerland, and will follow suit in France on April 7. The streaming service is stocked with more than 500 films, classic shows and original series on movies.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s national address on the coronavirus is set to become one of the most watched moments in UK television history. Nearly 28 million watched the 15-minute slot, in which Johnson introduced a three-week lockdown to help stymie the spread of COVID-19, according to live BARB ratings figures provided by overnights.tv.
The coronavirus has affected plans for Britain’s Got Talent on ITV. Fresh off signing a new five-year deal in 2019, the variety format is slated to return for its 14th season next month. While ITV will begin broadcasting audition rounds in the next few weeks, the show’s live finales in May have been postponed.
Big Brother Canada Season 8 has ended production in light of developments in Ontario on the fight against COVID-19. At this time, the show has no plans to resume production at a later date.
Cineflex Rights inked a deal to acquire worldwide rights to new factual series and one-off documentaries from ITN Productions. Programming includes The Clues That Caught the Killer (Channel 5, UK), The New Scotland Yard Files (CBS Reality, UK), Secret Life of the Forest (Channel 5, UK) and Battle of the Super Eaters: 3,000 Calories a Minute (Channel 4, UK).

Univision Sunday night premiere of Pequerios Gigantes reached 5.6 million Total Viewers who tuned in to all or part of the episode. In addition, Aqui y A hora: Faces of Coronavirus: A Discussion with the Experts averaged 1.8 million Total Viewers, 250,000 A18-34, 698,000 A 18-49 and 751,000 A 25-54, marking its highest rated telecast in the current 2019/2020 season across all these demographics. The return of Sal y Pimienta averaged 1.6 million Total Viewers, 580,000 A18-49 and 229,000 A18-34.
During the week of March 16, Fox News delivered its highest-rated week of the year in total day with 2.5 million viewers and 553,000 in the 25-54 demo, outperforming its own record from the 2018 midterm election. In primetime, FNC garnered 4 million viewers and 807,000 in the A25-54 demo.
Food Network’s third outing of Tournament of Champions was #2 in its timeslot among ad-supported cable (excluding news), posting a 0.9 P25-54 rating and a 1.0 W25-54 (Live+3), an increase of +71% vs. prior six weeks and +123% vs. year ago.
FETV ratings are on the upswing with viewers spending more time with their families and the network’s clans, like The Partridge Family, the Sugarbakers, the Nelsons and more. IQ20 Total Day C3 Household and Total Audience continues to outpace 4Q19 and 3Q19. With these two demos alone, the net is up +6% over 4Q19 and up +15% over 3Q19.
Extra (new season high 1.1 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, up 22% from the week before) was the only syndicated strip of any type to set a new season record in the session ending March 15, as it featured major coverage of the coronavirus outbreak. Other magazines making double-digit upward moves were Entertainment Tonight (3.0, up 11%), which matched its season high and led the category for the ninth time in the past 10 weeks, and Access Hollywood (8-week high 1.5, up 15%), which tied its strongest rating of the season.
