ABC picked up a second season of The Conners, with John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman onboard. “This team is fearless in their willingness to tackle contemporary issues with humor and heart, and I have no doubt they will continue to outdo themselves,” said Karey Burke, President of ABC Entertainment. The spin-off, born of the revived Roseanne’s implosion, ranked as the number one new comedy this season in total viewers (9.5 million) and A18-49 (2.2/10).
The CW’s Supernatural will end after its upcoming season 15. In addition to being the network’s longest-running series (starting on the WB and UPN), Supernatural is the longest-running sci-fi/genre series ever on American broadcast television. Exec producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb promised to give “these characters that we love the send off they deserve.” Though an Instagram post from series star Jensen Ackles kept hope alive for some fans. “Well, it’s official. One more round for the Winchester brothers. Though nothing ever really ends in Supernatural…does it?” said Ackles with a wink.
WarnerMedia is creating the role of Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, announced CEO John Stankey in an internal memo last seek. The position is designed to “help ensure our business encourages and values diverse perspectives, supports the unique voices of the talent we work with, and is reflected in the world-class content we create,” wrote Stankey. At a recent town hall meeting introducing WarnerMedia’s new, all-male group of top executives, Stankey had been asked about the lack of women and said the company planned to address the issue.
Discovery is launching HGTV in Germany as a free to air channel in June, part of its plan to expand the global reach of the former Scripps brands it acquired last year. Discovery research has determined that 209 million people across EMEA are interested in home decoration, DIY and home improvement. “Discovery’s strategy is to connect with passionate audiences across the Globe and the HGTV brand creates a very powerful opportunity to provide a dedicated home brand that fuels people’s passions, builds a community spirit and works across multiple platforms for audiences and commercial partners,” said Kasia Kieli, President & Managing Director, Discovery EMEA. HGTV was launched in Poland two years ago, prior to Discovery’s acquisition, and has become the #2 channel for women.
On the heels of the completion of the Disney/Fox deal, layoffs that could affect about 4000 employees started last week. Among the senior level execs leaving the building are Greg Meidel, President of Twentieth Television, and 20th Century Fox Television Distribution President Mark Kaner. Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment Chairman Dana Walden sent a memo to staff Friday saying the combined companies represent a “dream team of executives and staff,” while noting that “bringing our businesses together will require strategy and patience.”
A local driver working for NBC News was killed in Syria on Saturday by an explosive device. Nearby journalists were not harmed. NBC News President Noah Oppenheim said the network was gathering information about the events, and was in touch with the driver’s family to support them.
A blackout of Viacom’s 23 channels on DirecTV was averted immediately following the expiration of a carriage pact at midnight on Friday. “Thank you for your patience as we work to reach an agreement with AT&T-DIRECTV to keep Viacom channels on the air,” said the KeepViacom.com website on Saturday.
At the Parks and Recreation panel at PaleyFest this weekend, co-creator Michael Schur didn’t rule out a TV reunion for the 2009-2015 comedy – if there was a story that “needed” to be told. “There’s nothing I loved more than working on this show. This felt like the most important thing that I would ever do. I would never, ever, ever say never,” said Schur, but added, “I don’t want to do it just to do it.”
Also at Paleyfest, Peter M. Lenkov, co-creator and an executive producer on CBS reboots MacGyver, Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I., was asked about a possible crossover episode. “We talk about it a lot in the room, how to do it,” said Lenkov. “I think there’s a way to do it, it’s just logistics.” One hitch: while Hawaii Five-o and Magnum P.I. are shot in Hawaii, MacGyver films in Atlanta.
Lori Loughlin, among the 50 people charged in a college admissions bribery scheme, appeared to get support from a Fuller House castmate Saturday night. Accepting the Kids’ Choice Award for Favorite Funny TV Show during Nickelodeon’s ceremony, Candace Cameron-Bure said, “Family sticks together no matter what. Jeremy Wade (River Monsters) is back on Animal Planet with Jeremy Wade’s Dark Waters, launching globally Sunday, April 21 at 9p. Wade investigates reports of unexplained sightings in the deep.
Ryan Murphy took to Instagram to announce the September 27 premiere date for his first Netflix original series, The Politician, starring Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Lange, among others. “So proud of this incredible project and the incredible cast,” wrote Murphy. Later, in what he called a “diva update” during Paleyfest, Murphy announced that Judith Light (Who’s the Boss) and Bette Midler have jumped onboard.
Kristin Cavallari (Very Cavallari) will host Fox reality show revival Paradise Hotel. Competition dating series launches Thursday, May 9 at 8p, airing Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in what Fox calls an “as it happens” format. Fox first aired the show for one season in 2003; a second season ran on MyNetwork TV and Fox Reality Channel in 2008.
Gen Z-focused digital studio and network Brat is set to launch two new original series this spring. Red Ruby tells the story of a group of teenage vampires, while comedy Stuck follows a high school student, played by YouTuber Enya Umanzor, trapped in a time loop.
Riviera is back for season two on Sundance Now starting Thursday, June 20. Joining the cast are Alex Lanipekun (Homeland), Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Juliet Stevenson (Truly, Madly, Deeply), Poppy Delevingne (Kingsman: The Golden Circle), Jack Fox (Dracula), and Grégory Fitoussi (World War Z).
Mark Steines (Entertainment Tonight) will host Nat Geo WILD’s Animal ER Live. Four-week event series set in animal hospitals and mobile vet emergency units around the country launches Saturday, March 30 at 9p.

At its annual Rainbow Room Upfront event last week, Crown Media Family Networks announced Project Christmas Joy: Alabama (wt) on Hallmark Drama, a new original program for the holiday season that will give a town in need an extreme Hallmark holiday transformation. “This show aligns perfectly with Hallmark Drama’s exclusive offering of original content,” said Bill Abbott, President & CEO, Crown Media Family Networks.
Also coming to Hallmark Drama: Christmas Cookie Countdown, a five-episode competition series featuring talented amateur home bakers. Goodies will be judged by a panel of three well-known pastry chefs and hosted by a rotating panel of Hallmark stars. The program will be the among the net’s first on-air original content since its 2017 launch.
Hallmark Channel superfans, Jacklyn Collier and Shawlini Manjunath-Holbrook, will host the network’s new podcast, Hallmark Channels’ Bubbly Sesh. The duo began a Hallmark Channel-dedicated podcast two years ago when they discovered their shared love for the network’s programming. The weekly program will debut in April, with “Jacks” and “Shawl” offering sneak peeks at upcoming programming, exclusive talent interviews, and behind-the-scenes production scoop.

For the first time globally, the number of people subscribing to streaming online video services (up 27% from 2017, to 613.3 million) exceeded the number signed on to cable TV services (556 million), according to the Motion Pictures Associaion of America 2018 Theme Report. The number of online video subs in the U.S. rose to 186.9 million, a 17% increase.
Timed to his 25th year on television, Conan O’Brien is rolling out an archive of his best comedy, celebrity interviews and stand-up comedy acts. The first phase of that collection, Conan25: The Remotes, launches today in a special section of Teamcoco.com. “Fans are always asking me how they can watch the ‘old stuff,’” said O’Brien. “Now I finally have an answer that is legal.”
