Amid growing calls from countries to postpone the Olympics this Summer, IOC member Dick Pound told USA Today that the Games would be delayed until 2021, with the details to be worked out. “On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview with the publication. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.” The decision is not official though, with the IOC responding that “It’s the right of every IOC member to interpret the decision of the IOC EB which was announced yesterday,” per the AP.
A slate of countries that include Canada, Australia, Brazil, Germany, Norway, and Portugal have called for the Games to be pushed back, with some stating that they would not participate if the event went on as planned in its current timeframe. The IOC on Sunday announced it would take the next four weeks to review a number of scenarios regarding the Games,
PROGRAMMING
The 2019-20 UEFA Champions League final is on hold indefinitely as a result of the coronavirus outbreak. The final of had been slated to take place on May 30 at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul. UEFA also announced the postponement of the UEFA Women’s Champions League final as well as the Europa League final. “No decision has yet been made on rearranged dates,” the org said in a statement. “The working group, established last week as a result of the conference call among the stakeholders of European football, which was chaired by UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, will analyse the options available. The group has already begun its examination of the calendar. Announcements will be made in due course.”
Meanwhile, La Liga, following a meeting with the Royal Spanish Football Federation locked in the suspension of play in Spain because of the coronavirus pandemic. The league said in a statement on Monday that it would not resume play until the Spanish government mandates that it is safe to do so.
WWE is making WWE Network free for fans, unlocking a big portion of its library and extending free access to thousands of hours of on-demand content, including every WrestleMania in history, countless pay-per-view spectaculars, original documentaries and more, for a limited time.
Meanwhile, the TVS Television Network announced that the company is now streaming six sports channels on www.watchyour.tv, including; TVS Sports Network; TVS Classic Sports Network; TVS Women’s Sports Network; TVS Tavern TV Network; TVS Boxing Network; and TVS Turbo TV Network. TVS plans on producing 500 new shows per year from their studios in Greater Philadelphia.
ESPN2 celebrates Peyton Manning’s birthday with five hours of special primetime programming dedicated to the NFL quarterback this evening beginning at 7p. Programming will see ESPN2 present five volumes of Peyton’s Places compilation episodes, SEC Storied: The Book of Manning documentary and NFL highlights shows that look back at signature performances during Manning’s playing career.
IOC’s Olympic Channel global media platform launched the Olympic Ceremonies Channel, reliving the “pageantry, excitement and iconic moments of past Opening and Closing Ceremonies” highlighted by the parade of nations, flame lightings and artistic programs. The platform features Opening and Closing Ceremonies from the Summer and Winter Games held during the past 30 years.
Telemundo Deportes is serving up Que Momento: A Golden Final, the story behind the Mexican National Team’s gold medal win against Brazil at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. Que Momento will air Friday at midnight on Telemundo and via the Telemundo Deportes app with re-airs on Telemundo on Saturday at 3p and Universo on Monday at noon. The show will be hosted by five-time Emmy winner Andres Cantor and will feature exclusive interviews with Luis Fernando Tena, Salvador “Chava” Reyes, Marco Fabian, Diego Reyes, Oribe Peralta, Jesus Corona, Carlos Salcido, Javier Aquino, Nestor Vidrio, and Miguel Ponce, among others.

CS:GO major ESL Rio has been pushed from May until November, but will be keeping the event’s Major status and replacing the second Major of the year. The Champions Stage (the playoffs) of the competition will remain at the Jeunesse Arena and will be played from Nov. 19-22, boasting a $2,000,000 prize pool in total. “Our decision is an extremely tough one, but health and safety have to take absolute priority”, said Ulrich Schulze, SVP Product at ESL. “Given the very difficult circumstances for live events, we still wanted to give the Brazilian fans the CS:GO Major they deserve. We ask everyone to stay safe and we are pleased to be able to continue to deliver some quality CS:GO esports content to the community during these troubling times, while we prepare the Rio Major for November”
Following ESL’s move, BLAST announced that it would be postponing the BLAST Premier Fall Showdown. The event was pushed back one week and will now run Nov. 25-29 in order to avoid competing with the Major in Rio.
