IN THE NEWS
HBO Max and HBO will count 120-150 million subscribers by 2025, up from a target of 75-90 million projected in 2019, said AT&T on its investor day. An ad-supported tier of HBO Max will launch in June – the same month the platform launches globally – and already has $80 million in upfront advertising commitments. HBO original series in the ad-supported offering will not have advertising, and theatrical day-and-date premieres from Warner Bros. will not be part of the package.
“We believe we are already the No. 1 revenue-generating stand-alone subscription video-on-demand service in the US,” said Jason Kilar, CEO of WarnerMedia. “We earn 90% in margin from each retail subscriber that we add.” Kilar added he anticipates HBO Max/ HBO to more than double revenue over the next five years, and break even in 2025.
Discovery Inc. notified employees the company’s back-to-the-office date is September 1, moved from June. In a memo to employees, Chief People and Culture Officer Adria Alpert-Romm said a survey indicated people weren’t sure about returning to the office yet. While some offices could open sooner “where it makes sense,” she added, employees can choose to WFH until September 1.
Roku acquired Quibi’s library in January; now it’s picking up some of the shuttered short-form service’s former content executives. Colin Davis, Quibi’s comedy head, and Brian Tannenbaum, who will lead alternative content, are both onboard. “Quibi built a talented team to support the development of really fantastic programming,” said a Roku spokesman. “We were thrilled to welcome a number of them to the Roku team in recent weeks and their deep expertise will help ensure the successful launch and growth of the Quibi content on The Roku Channel.”
Chris Harrison is being replaced in the next installment of “The Bachelorette” by former Bachelorettes Tayshia Adams and Kaitlyn Bristowe. Harrison stepped aside from his duties after defending a contestant accused of racist behavior in the past; he admitted it was a mistake and apologized. “As we continue the dialogue around achieving greater equity and inclusion with ‘The Bachelor’ franchise, we are dedicated to improving BIPOC representation of our crew, including among the executive producer ranks,” said Warner Horizon and ABC Entertainment.
Last Wednesday’s episode of CBS’ “The Talk” is “under internal review,” said the network. During the show, co-host Sharon Osbourne was accused by Sheryl Underwood of appearing to give “validation or safe haven” to racist comments by Piers Morgan. “We are committed to a diverse, inclusive and respectful workplace,” said CBS. After the broadcast, Osbourne tweeted an apology; Morgan demanded an apology from “The Talk” for “their disgraceful slurs against ME” for slamming Meghan Markle.

CNBC Business News made some changes to its Washington DC bureau: Eamon Javers will move into the role of Senior Washington Correspondent; Kayla Tausche will serve as the network’s Senior White House Correspondent covering the new administration; and Ylan Mui will continue her work reporting on Capitol Hill and economic policy as Senior Congressional Correspondent. “For more than three decades, CNBC has had a unique place in covering the nation’s political landscape – our audience demands we expose and explain connections between policy, the markets and business,” said Dan Colarusso, SVP of CNBC Business News. “Now we have a dual mandate to drive deep, original reporting on economic issues for Business Day and attack sharp, new angles on the day’s critical politics stories for ‘The News with Shepard Smith.’”
