DIY Network picked up season three of Holmes & Holmes, starring professional contractor Mike Holmes and his son, home renovation expert Mike Jr. Season two ratings were 136 percent higher than the net’s overall prime average and grew nearly 30 percent over its freshman run. The new 12-episode season is slated to air in late summer 2019.

Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels will get big bucks to move to California. The sequel(ish) is set to receive $24.7 million in tax credits to relocate from Dublin.  “Shooting in California obviously has many attractions, but without the state’s Film and TV tax credit it could become cost prohibitive,” said Showtime co-President of Entertainment Jana Winograde. “We couldn’t be happier about how things worked out or the benefits it will bring to the job market.”

Mike Judge (Silicon Valley) signed a new two-year exclusive deal with HBO, which has put two projects in development: Qualityland, a co-production between HBO and Lionsgage/3 Arts, and limited series A5, which asks the questions: why do a-holes exist, and can they be cured?

ADVERTISING & BRANDS

BEN Group announced that its influencer marketing and brand integration business, BEN, increased 2018 revenue by 52% over its 2017 performance, and delivered over 6,200 brand integrations during the year, representing an estimated total media value of over $1.5 billion – a 50% percent increase over 2017. “Our proprietary deep learning algorithms are continually improving the effectiveness of our client campaigns and the efficiency of our business,” said Ricky Ray Butler, CEO of BEN Group.

Ad intelligence and sales enablement platform MediaRadar has introduced “RFP Predictor” to its suite of solutions. RFP Predictor reveals which brands will be reviewing proposals, to help ad sales teams anticipate the, on average, over 1,000 RFPs issued per quarter. “One of the most frustrating things for any publisher is learning that you only have a few days to complete a lengthy RFP,” said Todd Krizelman, CEO of  MediaRadar. “Our RFP Predictor solves this problem, empowering sales teams to be one step ahead.”

DIGITAL DATA

Streaming service NBC News Now will launch in early May with eight hours of programming, announced NBC News President Noah Oppenheim at the SXSW  conference. The free, ad-supported offering will include live updates every hour. “We will be doing original work that will be specific for the streaming service,” as well as drawing from the reporting on other NBC News properties like E! News and sports, said Oppenheim.

DirecTV Now is cutting its subscriber packages from five to two: DirecTV Now Plus, which offers 40+ channels for $50/month, and DirecTV Max, with 50+ channels for $70/month. Both options include HBO, but drop some cable entertainment channels. Existing customers can keep their existing packages for an increase of $10/month. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said in December that the company would be refining the offerings and raising the price.

TEGNA is launching Vault Studios, a digital content studio offering storytelling from the company’s archive of investigative reports. Starting with podcasts, Vault projects will pull from real-life cases investigated by TEGNA’s  reporters across 41 markets. “Engaging with our audiences in new and innovative ways – across multiple platforms – is essential to our growth,” said Adam Ostrow, TEGNA’s Chief Digital Officer. Topics like true crime, cold cases and unsolved mysteries will “create new content offerings for today’s digital consumer,” he added.

Vault’s first podcast, Bomber, tells the story of how law enforcement hunted down the 2018 Austin serial bomber and brought 19 days of terror to a sudden, cataclysmic end. Hosted by TEGNA journalist Jason Puckett, the first episode, “A Loud Boom,” is set to debut on Friday, March 15.

TECH TALK

Slomo.tv, producer of SSD-based video record and replay systems, will launch its second generation Fulcrum AT/12G 4K instant replay server. The new version offers broadcast production companies 10 channels in replay mode at 4K resolution and up to 16 channels in replay mode for 3G/HD/SD, with a compact 4K server system that enables advanced slow motion and instant replay capabilities as well as direct recording of NLE Native video files for editing on site. The automatic creation of clips during instant replays is a Slomo.tv proprietary feature, which allows the operator to quickly create highlights/summary packages while working in instant replay mode.

Drive-to-store platform S4M is releasing a new ad format, the Pass-to-Store, offering advertisers a method to drive incremental in-store visits with smart proximity-based push notification retargeting. Shoppers download a card with a promotion or invitation offered by an advertiser, which is then saved into their mobile phone wallet. Once the card is saved in the user’s wallet, the Pass-to-Store ad can trigger a location-based notification to remind consumers of their available offer as they enter into a designated proximity of a store location or an event venue.

Apple sent reporters an invitation to a special event at the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino the morning of March 25. No details were offered, but best guess is the focus will be on the video content service, given the invite’s main line: “It’s show time.”

NVIDIA is acquiring chipmaker Mellanox for $6.9 billion, in a deal expected to close by year’s end. There have been reports that Microsoft and Intel were also interested in the company. NVIDIA, which collaborated with Mellanox on building supercomputers for the U.S. Dept. of Energy,  said it is interested in Mellanox to “optimize datacenter-scale workloads across the entire computing, networking and storage stack to achieve higher performance, greater utilization and lower operating cost for customers.”
