Telemundo Deportes announced plans to launch the first-ever Spanish-language esports channel in the US offering fans more than 2,000 streaming hours of content a year featuring exclusive streamers, short-form content and competitions. The channel is available via livestream on Twitch and YouTube. The EA Sports FIFA19 Global Series will become the first competition to stream on the Telemundo Deportes esports channel, offering fans exclusive coverage of the entire tournament, including the upcoming events from the Global Series and the Grand Final, with play beginning April 5. The channel is hosted by streamers Sofia Ornelas of Mexico and Juan “El Patan” Sotullo from Argentina. The two streamers present daily content and short-form video, including at least eight hours of livestreaming as they play some of the most popular video games.
 
“The launch of Telemundo Deportes esports channel strengthens our leadership position in the esports space and gives us an opportunity to further connect with the Hispanic, multicultural gaming audience,” said Eli Velazquez, executive vice president of sports content, NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. “As the U.S. Spanish-language home of FIFA, we are thrilled to bring back the EA Sports FIFA19 Global Series and enhance our presentation of the event with the launch of the new Telemundo Deportes esports channel.”
 
 
COMPETITION and VENUES

 
ELEAGUE and Psyonix landed AXE as a sponsor for the first-ever ELEAGUE x Rocket League Game Zone presented by AXE, an exhibition showdown between the top four Collegiate Rocket League teams taking place within the NCAA Final Four Fan Fest presented by Capital One from April 5-8, at the Minneapolis Convention Center. In addition, the Game Xone will offer Rocket League game stations. In competitive play, the inaugural ELEAGUE CRL Spring Invitational will be live streamed across Twitch and ELEAGUE.com with TBS carrying a feature show highlighting the showdown’s top moments on April 12 at 11p.
 
Blizzard laid out playoff plans for Stage 1 of the 2019 Overwatch League season, with play running March 21-24, with the semifinals and finals locked in to run live on March 23 and 24 at 6p on ABC, along with the ABC app and the ESPN app. Overall, eight teams will qualify, with the Pacific and Atlantic division winners earning the top two seeds in a single-elimination bracket. First-round quarterfinals will be a first-to-three map series and will take place March 21 and 22. Stage 1 semifinals and finals are a first-to-four map series and are scheduled for March 23 and 24, respectively. The Stage Playoffs prize pool includes $200,000 for the winner, $100,000 for the runner-up, $50,000 for the third- and fourth-place teams, and $25,000 for the fifth- through eighth-place finishers.

Major League Soccer detailed plans for the 2019 edition of eMLS Cup presented by PlayStation, taking place on March 30. This year’s edition will feature a new PAX After Hours format, with the games set to take place at The Castle at Park Plaza in Boston following the conclusion of the day’s activities at PAX East. Prior to the streamed portion of the event, where the eMLS Cup champion will be crowned, all 22 eMLS players (each representing a different MLS team) will compete in one last regular season, where they will compete against opponents from the opposite conference for the first time. Once that regular season is finished, the top five players in each conference – based on their aggregated record from League Series One and Two plus the eMLS Cup regular season – will qualify for the final stage.

 
PUBG detailed the roadmap for qualifying into the top international competitions in PUBG esports for 2019. Opening with the FACEIT Global Summit: PUBG Classic, the first global event on the calendar and will include 24 teams from around the world starting April 16. At the end of Phase 2, top teams from Europe/Middle East/Africa, North America, Latin America, and Oceania will participate in a second PUBG Classic event. The third PUBG Classic will run after Phase 2 as well, bringing five pro teams from China, four from Korea, three from Southeast Asia, and two each from Japan and Chinese Taipei/Hong Kong/Macau.
 
PUBG Corporation also announced the start of the first season of the PUBG Europe League for residing in Europe, Middle East and Africa, with play beginning March 21. 16 teams participating in the PEL will face each other over three Phases. At the conclusion of Phase 3, the top performing teams throughout the season will reach the Global Championship, where they will square off against the best of all nine global regions for the chance to win a portion of the $2 million prize pool.
 
NASCAR, 704Games and the Race Team Alliance announced the first-ever eNASCAR Heat Pro League Draft set to take place at ISM Raceway on March 10. The inaugural draft will be conducted in Gatorade Victory Lane inside the newly designed INfield at ISM Raceway. The eNASCAR Heat Pro League, a collaboration between 704Games, RTA, and NASCAR, is the first-ever NASCAR esports league on consoles. The newly formed esports league will feature 14 teams and 28 drivers, each owned and operated by prominent NASCAR race teams. On the clock, with the first pick of the 2019 eNASCAR Heat Pro League Draft is Chip Ganassi Racing.
 
ESL and Oculus, the VR team at Facebook announced plans for VR League: Season 3, with gameplay set to commence on March 24 for a prize pool of $250,000. “2019 will be a huge year for VR gaming with the launch of Oculus Quest and Season 3 & 4 of the VR League,” said Christopher K. McKelvy, Head of Esports at Oculus. “This year will be Oculus’ biggest investment in esports yet. We’re adding new games, more broadcasts and a bigger prize pool.”

J.League, Japan’s top domestic soccer org, announced plans to open a new esports league in collaboration with the makers of video game Pro Evolution Soccer. Competitors will represent each of the 40 clubs in Japan’s top two leagues during two days of competition in July, competing on the mobile version of the popular soccer simulation game.
 
 
INSIGHTS

 
One of the advantages live streaming content has over traditional media is the ability to interact with content in real time. On Twitch, chatters use global emotes to meme key moments in game play or competitive esports. Our insights focus on two popular emotes and their usage during the top esports competitions last week.
  • The Overwatch League channel generated the most PogChamps: The emote was used 16.7k more times on the Overwatch League channel than the combined value of the Riot Games and ESL_CSGO channels.
  • CS:GO Fans were the most active PogChampers and LuLers: Of the 74.6k messages sent in our sample, 41% were generated by viewers on the ESL CS:GO’s channel.
  • Esports and LuL are synonymous: The LuL emote was mentioned 3.5k more times by 2.7k more chatters than the PogChamp emote.

Gillette is cutting a big deal with Twitch to launch the Gillette Gaming Alliance, a team of 11 Twitch streamers from 11 countries tapped to represent the brand and create content for viewers. Starting this month, the Gillette Gaming Alliance will support a “Bits for Blades” promotion, as well as an ultimate fan experience at TwitchCon Europe in Berlin from April 13-14. Top esports org Cloud9 locked in a deal with AT&T, marking the first team to receive sponsorship from the telecommunications giant in a move to “grow its relationships with new and existing customers” via an increased presence in esports.
Later this year, Cloud9 will launch production on a new, weekly digital show providing team highlights, player profiles, a look at upcoming tournaments and other esports news from across the Cloud9 organization and its partners. AT&T will be the presenting sponsor of this new series called “The Nines.” Fans can catch the series on Cloud9’s digital platforms. “Teaming up with a company like AT&T, who has always prided itself on being ahead of the curve, is a tremendous moment for the whole C9 organization,” said Jack Etienne, CEO & Owner of Cloud9. “With what AT&T is bringing us, we’re going to be able to bring the fans so much more – more content, more access, more memes, and more championships. I can’t wait to see the incredible things we’ll do together.”
 
The NBA 2K League will launch its second season next month with a new deal with Raynor Gaming, a brand in the seating industry and now the official gaming chair partner of the NBA 2K League. NBA 2K League-branded chairs will first be featured at the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft and, throughout the season, all team training rooms in the NBA 2K League Studio Powered by Intel will also be equipped with Raynor chairs.  Raynor Gaming is currently a partner of both 76ers GC and Cavs Legion GC.
 
Allied Esports and HyperX announced the addition of Allied Esports’ two European properties to their international naming rights partnership. Allied Esports’ European mobile arena, nicknamed “Big Betty,” has joined the HyperX Esports Truck brand, while its production and broadcast facility located in Hamburg, Germany has been renamed the HyperX Studio. The agreement follows two previous naming rights announcements between the companies for HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas, Allied Esports’ global flagship arena, and the North American HyperX Esports Truck, nicknamed “Big Meta.”
 
Abrams Artists Agency revealed the signing of gaming influencers to its newly launched gaming division. Natalie ‘ZombieUnicorn’ Casanova, Ally ‘AllysGotGame’ Hilliard, Caesar ‘CDNthe3rd’ Noriega (aka Ceez), and Harris Heller the creator of ‘Alpha Gaming’ have joined the roster at the agency and will be represented under the Agency’s Alternative Programming, Licensing and Digital division.
 
LCS franchise Golden Guardians locked in a new partnership with Madrinas Coffee. Activation will include a jersey sponsorship and serving as  the official coffee of the team, with entitlement space in the kitchen of the team’s headquarters. The brand will be showcased on refrigerators in the headquarters, its LCS green room, and in team housing.
 
NIKE China is diving into the League of Legends Pro League, announcing a four-year partnership that will make the brand the official and exclusive apparel and footwear partner of the LPL through 2022. Starting this year, Nike will provide apparel and footwear for all 16 teams of the LPL. As part of the agreement, Nike will also “leverage its expertise in sports science research to explore new ways to serve esport athletes through customized physical training programs.” LPL athletes will be equipped with an all-new team uniform ahead of the 2019 World Championships.
 
OpTic Gaming entered into a collaborative partnership with Champion Athleticwear and will work together on a number of projects to bring co-branded apparel to the team’s fan community, starting with a year-long campaign to create co-branded clothing in collaboration between Champion and OpTic’s creative teams “The awesome OpTic community, the Green Wall, is all about style and confidence, and just like their name says, Champion comes from a legacy of winners dating back a hundred years. It’s a perfect fit,” says Joe Hills, Head of Brand Strategy for OpTic Gaming. “Working this closely with Champion is a huge deal for us, because it means that the OpTic community is helping to push mainstream awareness of esports in popular culture, and it’s a show of faith for Champion, who want to co-brand their apparel to a community of passionate and loyal fans from all over the world.”
 
Pringles has expanded its sponsorship of ESL, according to TEO, in a deal that will activate at eight events that started with IEM Katowice 2019. Other events will include ESL One Cologne, ESL One Hamburg, ESL National Championship SEE, ESL Meisterschaft Deutschland, and the German stream for the European Masters Fall Split.
 
ESL also announced a three-year partnership extension with Acer, which designates Acer as the official global partner for all four Intel Extreme Masters events seasons 14 through 16.

Insight TV is partnering with VICE Studios to launch a new esports series that will be broadcast globally on the platform. Premiering in Autumn 2019, the Modern Day Gladiators immerses viewers in the culture of esports, exploring the compelling human stories behind this ever-increasing global trend.
 
 
INDUSTRY

 
Apex Legends continues to soar, with Respawn Entertainment announcing that the free-to-play battle royale title has now passed 50 million players since its launch about a month ago. The benchmark continues a powerful trend that saw the game top one million players in eight hours, and three days to breaks the 10 million mark. “Thank you to the 50 million players that have shown up in the first month since Apex Legends launched,” Respawn CEO Vince Zampella said on Twitter. “You have all made this something special and there’s much more to come!”
 
Vivendi sold the remaining part of its interest in Ubisoft, following a failed bid to acquire the developer. The sale netted the media conglomerate with a capital gain of nearly $250 million. In total, the sale of Vivendi’s interest in Ubisoft represents about $2.3 billion.
 
NewZoo released a new study of mobile gaming called “Betting on Billions: Unlocking the Power of Mobile Gamers,” in partnership with Activision Blizzard. The survey projects that $148.1 billion will be made by mobile games this year, with additional takeaways that include gamers having larger purchase influence than non-gamers – up to 23% are “more likely” to influence people they know to make purchases. Meanwhile, 39% of game app users are Millenials with half from each gender. 41% of mobile gamers have at least one child while 18% of gamers are more likely to have a favorable attitude toward global brands.
 
Battle royale game H1Z1 officially got a rebrand, renaming itself ‘Z1 Battle Royale’ in addition to giving a facelift to the game’s core mechanics and user interface.
 
 
ROSTER MOVES

 
The 2019 NBA 2K League Draft took place at Barclays Center on Tuesday, with all 21 teams completing their six-person roster at the four-round draft. While Jazz Gaming selected Spencer “Ria” Wyman with the No. 1 overall pick, the league also made headlines when Warriors Gaming Squad selected Chiquita “Chiquitae126” Evans in the fourth round with the 56th over pick, marking the first woman drafted into the NBA 2K League. Overall, 75 players were picked up from the pool of candidates, including four international players. “It feels surreal. It’s an amazing experience. I’m very glad to be here, excited to be here. It’s a very humbling experience,” said Evans. “Women actually got me through this — a lot of my friends who play 2K with me. They’ve been pushing me to get through everything, especially when I found out that I made the draft pool. I’ve had amazing support both male and female, and I’m just very, very excited to be in the position that I’m in.”
 
Arnold Hur was upped to COO of Gen.G Esports, according to TEO. Hur had served as Gen.G’s chief growth officer and managing director.
 
Meanwhile, Gen.G signed three former Overwatch players to their new Apex Legends team: Ted “silkthread” Wang. Christopher “Grimreality” Schaefer, and Tim “Dummy” Olsen. “We think Apex Legends is one of the most promising titles for esports, and we’re excited to be able to find such a group of talented players that are committed to building a great team,” said Hur. “As the scene is still developing, we really debated about when we wanted to enter the scene, but when we met this group, we knew this was the right team for us as we loved that they were veterans of the fps scene, displayed both great mechanics and strategy, and had a professional team-first attitude.”
 
Speaking of which, 100 Thieves also announced its participation as one of the first professional esports teams for Apex Legends, adding three players: Connor “Gigz” White, Justin “Teenage” Phipps and Isiaih “Lifted” Slowik. “The battle royale genre is not a flash in the pan – it’s proven to be a hit from H1Z1 to Fortnite to Apex Legends,” says 100 Thieves’ Founder and CEO, Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag. “We want to work with the best players in the world and help them reach new heights in their careers. 100 Thieves is committed long term to battle royale.”
