The Tony Romo sweepstakes has reportedly ended, with multiple reports throughout Friday stating that CBS will retain the former Cowboy for its NFL broadcast booth in a long-term deal. The deal, reported to span three-years, would be worth $17 million, according to the New York Post, which would rank as the highest-paid NFL analyst in television history. In addition, provided the NFL extends its rights deal with CBS, Romo’s deal extends by seven additional years, even if the new rights deal is for a term shorter than seven, per ESPN.
PROGRAMMING
Speaking of deals, NBC Sports Group and Dorna Sports entered into a new, multi-year media rights agreement in which NBC Sports picks up rights to present all MotoGP races across its platforms beginning in 2020. NBC Sports opens the 2020 MotoGP calendar with coverage of the Qatar Grand Prix from Losail International Circuit on March 8 at 12:30p on NBCSN, the first of 20 MotoGP races that will air on NBC and NBCSN in 2020. “Our agreement with MotoGP further cements NBC Sports as the Home of Motorsports and enhances our comprehensive racing portfolio,” said Jon Miller, President, Programming, NBC Sports and NBCSN. “We’re excited to bring MotoGP to viewers across the country and showcase the world’s premier motorcycle road racing series.”
CBS Sports Network extended its ties with Infront Moto Racing for another three years, keeping the FIM Motocross World Championship air in the United States. In 2020, CBS Sports will bring US MXGP fans coverage that will include the 2020 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, taking place in Ernée, France and begins with the opening round of the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship in Matterley Basin, for the MXGP of Great Britain.
CNN reports that the National College Players Association asked the NCAA to consider playing the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments without crowds due to coronavirus worries. “In regard to the NCAA’s March Madness Tournament and other athletic events, there should be a serious discussion about holding competitions without an audience present,” the NCPA said in a statement Saturday. In response to the request, the NCAA said it is monitoring developments with the coronavirus outbreak.
ESPN announced that legal analyst and host Ryan Smith signed a new multiyear contract extension that will see him continues his duties as a legal analyst, a host on Outside the Lines and SportsCenter and a correspondent on E:60. Smith will also continue as a contributor on ABC News.
NFL Network reported on Friday that its coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine Presented by Verizon in primetime saw an average of 322K overall viewers and 141K P18-49 viewers. Day one was up 119% overall and up 71% in P18-49, over last year’s opening day coverage on NFL Network to rank as the most-watched day one and most watched weekday coverage of the NFL Scouting Combine among overall viewers on record.
Speaking of the NFL, the league announced that the Arizona Cardinals would serve as the home team for the NFL’s game in Mexico in this year. The Cardinals will return to Mexico for the first time since they played in the NFL’s inaugural international regular-season game against the San Francisco 49ers in 2005, with this year’s game played at Estadio Azteca.
MSG Networks announced the debut of its firstever “Music Week” takeover, featuring a full week of content that will highlight the intersection of music and sports. During the week-long initiative, MSG Networks will put a spotlight on the way the music industry crosses over into the sports world and how its relationship extends beyond the court and ice. The USGA unveiled its new U.S. Open brand platform, “From Many, One,” celebrating the nearly 10,000 golfers who will try to qualify for the championship, the 156 who will play and the one who will be crowned U.S. Open champion. “Our goal was to develop a distinct and powerful brand platform that allows us to celebrate what makes our championship unique and to tell the stories that drive our audiences to attend, watch and engage with the U.S. Open year-round,” said Craig Annis, chief brand officer of the USGA. “Given that the U.S. Open drives nearly 75 percent of the USGA’s revenue, the success of the championship directly impacts the work we do to support millions of golfers who enjoy the game.”

Sinclair Broadcast Group reportedly called a temporary truce to keep the FOX Sports RSNs and YES Network on YouTube TV while the two sides work on a longer-term carriage agreement. YouTube TV had previously notified customers that the channels might be dropped, stating that “This is a reflection of the rising cost of sports content,” in a tweet. “You may have noticed several other TV services have also decided to remove Fox Regional Sports Networks from their lineups.” Sinclair responded by stating that the company offered to lower fees in order to keep the channels on the platform.

DreamHack is moving its winter festival to Madrid where the new DreamHack Madrid will run Dev. 10-13 at the IFEMA. DreamHack Madrid will host a number of international esports tournaments, including the last DreamHack Open stop of the year. DreamHack Open is a part of the ESL Pro Tour, which was announced by DreamHack and ESL in 2019. DreamHack Open Madrid will have eight top-level CS:GO teams competing for the $100,000 prize pool and will be broadcasted through official DreamHack streaming channels as well as through media partners throughout the world. The Madrid festival will also feature the last stop of the Hearthstone Masters Tour with a massive $250,000 prize pool.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive platform HLTV.org was acquired by Better Collective, a sports betting media company. The acquisition includes HLTV.org, which serves as a leading publication for CS:GO esports in the industry, as well as Danish CS:GO community platform dust2.dk.
The 7Sports arm of German commercial broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 inked a deal to keep ESL rights through 2022. In addition to owning exclusive television rights in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, 7Sports picked up global digital rights for its esports.com portal, which will be rolled out globally this year.
