An email from Melissa Harris-Perry was made public on Friday, explaining to co-workers why she was boycotting her MSNBC show. Now discussions are underway arranging her departure from the news net. Upset about frequent preemptions and lack of editorial control during a ratings-grabbing presidential race, Harris-Perry’s email said she was skipping her show, which generally focuses on issues of social justice, because it “was taken – without comment or discussion or notice – in the midst of an election season.” Pointing out Harris-Perry’s has not been the only show to be preempted, MSNBC called her reaction “surprising, confusing and disappointing.” Although the host’s current contract expires in October, “The goal of the negotiation at this point is to determine the terms of severance, not reconciliation,” she told CNN on Sunday.
The Writers Guild of America is urging support for the Wright-Hannon bill, legislation in New York that would offer incentives for TV and film producers to hire females and minorities. In the WGA’s new YouTube video, House of Cards creator Beau Willimon explains, “Our industry has a problem with diversity, and the goal of the New York State tax credit as we envision it to incentivize the hiring of women and writers of color is an active, direct attempt to address that problem head on.”
