Good morning. It’s Tuesday February 28, 2017 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Peripherals: A peripheral (or peripheral device) is an add-on device – such as a computer mouse, a scanner, or a webcam – that’s used in conjunction with a computer.

TOP NEWS

The idea of YouTube and TV being separate entities may one day be a distant memory. Comcast announced plans to launch a YouTube video app for its Xfinity X1 set-top platform. The app is slated to roll out nationwide later this year. The move will place the web’s biggest video platform right alongside traditional TV channels, blurring the line between digital and linear. Terms of the deal between Google and Comcast weren’t disclosed.

The gaming-centric live-streaming platform Twitch is about to get into e-commerce. (No surprise, given that it’s owned by Amazon.) Beginning later this spring, Twitch says it will start allowing its 17,000 game-broadcasting partners to sell games and in-game content, directly from their own Twitch pages, as they’re streaming gameplay. Game publishers will take 70% of the resulting revenue, while partnered Twitch streamers will earn 5%. Twitch will pocket the last 25%. Twitch also says it will offer what it’s calling a “Twitch Crate” – essentially a package of digital goods such as emojis and badges – to consumers who buy games through the e-commerce program. A number of publishers have already signed on to the program, including Ubisoft, Digital Extremes, Telltale Games, and several others.

ADVERTISING

AOL has inked a major deal with the Germany-based mobile data company Adsquare. Under the new agreement, Adsquare’s data will be integrated into One by AOL, AOL’s programmatic platform for publishers. Adsquare’s first-party data will now be built directly into One by AOL’s ad campaigns. Adsquare’s data exchange aggregates mobile ID, retail purchase data, and location data from about 360 million users. And one of the major goals of the partnership is to improve location-based targeting. For instance, businesses will now be able to serve a mobile ad to people who recently shopped at their store, or even to people who are simply near their store. “By bringing Adsquare’s data on board, we are enhancing our already strong ability to deliver quality, scalable, holistic audiences for advertisers to reach and for publishers to monetize,” said AOL International exec Alex Timbs in a statement.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

When it comes to virtual reality, even the medium’s most bullish champions would acknowledge that the major players in the VR space are still figuring out how best to monetize content. This could be a step forward: At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Adobe showed off a new project for virtual reality advertising. The project – just a prototype right now – focuses on 2D videos within a VR environment. (For instance, a VR video might pause to show viewers an interstitial ad for Coca Cola.) The company told Variety that its ad solutions might be be publisher-ready within 6 to 12 months.

Some more VR news from the Mobile World Congress: Samsung has unveiled the newest version of the Gear VR, its mobile phone-based virtual reality headset. The product’s major update is a new external controller, very similar to the one that comes with Google’s Daydream View headset. The controller comes with a clickable touchpad, a trigger button, a volume rocker, and a back button for easier navigation within VR apps.

VR company Survios announced that its Raw Data virtual reality game is debuting on the Oculus Rift and Touch VR platform. The game launched for the HTC Vive headset last year. Notably, Rift owners and Vive owners will now be able to play cross-platform matches against one another.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Twitter,Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Pandora has a new Chief Financial Officer. The streaming music service has named Naveen Chopra to the post. Chopra replaces Mike Herring, who had served as CFO since 2013. Before joining Pandora, Chopra had held a variety of positions at TiVo since 2006. He took over as TiVo’s CFO in late 2012, and took on the additional title of Interim CEO in January of 2016. He left TiVo last September, after the company was acquired by Rovi. The new hire comes at a crucial moment for Pandora; the company is getting ready to launch a new music subscription service, similar to those offered by Spotify and Apple Music.
