TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Marvel Entertainment will take fans under the cape for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of its live-action movies and shows in the studio’s first-ever primetime television special. Marvel Studios: Assembling A Universe will air on ABC Tuesday, March 18, at 8p. From Iron Man to Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which airs on ABC, the special documents the story behind Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring interviews and making-of footage, plus new footage from Marvel’s upcoming films Captain America: The Winter Solider. A TV parental guideline will be assigned closer to the airdate. The primetime special news comes on the heels of Walt Disney Co. committing to spend $200 million over the next three years filming its four series based on Marvel heroes for Netflix. The deal marks the largest TV and film production venture in New York’s history; series begin airing in 2015.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Sprout is celebrating the Oscars, or should we say Oscar, in its own way this year. Beginning today, Oscar the Grouch stars in this weekend-long celebration of movies, helps launch a new season of Sesame Street on Sprout, and co-hosts The Sunny Side Up Show. Joining him on the green carpet is none other than Giuliana Rancic.

That awkward moment when… Hub Network and hit Internet destination Awkward Family Photos are partnering on a weeklong TV and digital promotion, March 10-16. The week’s Hub Network Family Movies will feature films with some very awkward families, including The Sandlot 2, Addams Family Values, Planet 51 and Ice Age. Plus, the net will run interstitials showing hilarious real family pictures of all kinds from the Awkward Family Photos site, brought to life with captions. The awkwardness extends online at HubNetwork.com and the network’s Facebook page, where more photos will be revealed.

DreamWorks Animation is packing its upcoming animated alien flick with some real star power. Rihanna will not only voice the protagonist in Home, due in theaters Nov. 26, she will also release an album this year based on the film. Home centers on a motely crew of aliens who are hiding on Earth to escape their enemies, and it’s based on author Adam Rex’s 2007 children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday. Rihanna will star as voice of teenager Gratuity "Tip" Tucci; Jennifer Lopez, Steve Martin and Jim Parsons (Bog Bang Theory) are also lending their voices to the project. The film is directed by Tim Johnson (Antz).

That zany Jimmy Kimmel. A month ago the ABC late-night host asked parents whose kids are hooked on Rainbow Looms to encourage their children to loom something for him out of the rubber bands. On Wednesday night he strutted out in a homemade suit-made entirely from thousands of individual rainbow looms donated by kids all over the country, 3,000-plus pieces in all. There was a big "awwww" moment, too. After receiving a video from the students at Arroyo Elementary School in Tustin, CA, who are aiming to build the longest rainbow chain in the world to raise money for their classmate who is fighting brain cancer, Kimmel invited young "Super Max Wilford" on Wednesday’s show.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Families across the pond will be first to try out Nickelodeon’s customizable My Nick Jr. app. Nickelodeon UK and Virgin Media are launching the app this week in the UK. The commercial-free personal programming service features 650 Nick Jr. episodes, and will be available to Virgin Media TiVo customers on TV packages L and XL. Parents can program a customized profile and playlist for their child including specific topics/shows they wish to make prominent and the duration their child can watch. The app learns the preferences of the child and chooses episodes to play accordingly. No release date has been set for the service in the U.S.

GAMES & APPS

LEGO Legends of Chima Online is out for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the LEGO Group and WB Games Montreal. Players can not only wind their way through Chima, but the free-to-play iOS game has a cross-play feature with PCs and Macs that enables them to seamlessly pick up and play on the iOs device right where they left off on their computer.
 
LazyTown is releasing another installment in the LazyTown BooClips digital storybook app, created with Castle Builders. The newest adventure includes a narrated storybook based on season 3 episode "Little Pink Riding Hood" and a recipe for a healthy smoothie, SuperHero Training videos with Sportacus and energetic music videos that reinforce the show’s healthy message.

ADVERTISING & PROMOS

Kermit is joining the tea party. No, not that one… He and his Muppet pals are starring in Unilever‘s new Lipton ad campaign that will premiere during Sunday night’s Oscar telecast. It’s the first unified campaign for Lipton hot and iced teas, according to Advertising Age, and it’s being preceded by a 90-second teaser released yesterday on YouTube, and a heavy social-media push. The campaign dovetails with the Muppets’ publicity tour for Muppets Most Wanted, their Disney film out March 21.
